walkedaway··on Nestlé to Debut Plant-Based Eggs, Shrimp
Are meat eaters the target audience here? I was always under the impression that the target audience was vegetarians that longed for a burger et al.

As a meat eater, I can't imagine myself ever even trying a plant-based "meat" product. If I want veggies, I eat veggies. If I want meat, I eat meat. I know, crazy.

Covid has exposed the powers that be to be about exactly that: power. In the US, gun and ammo sales are through the roof due to the overreach of government. Everyone in the west has been warned by seeing how our governments react to try and control us. Well, everyone except Sweden and South Korea.

The surprise to me is not that governments are doing this. The surprise to me is that so many people fall in line with it as if they are incapable of thinking for themselves. Maybe after so many millennia of being serfs, slaves, and other subjugations its just in our DNA.

If only there was a way to keep in touch with people if you didn't have a Facebook account. I wonder what people did before Facebook?
walkedaway··on Afghan President Ghani relinquishes power, Taliban form interim gov't
There's not a single Biden voter that cares that Biden is incompetent and creating messes for the US (border crises, inflation, gas shortages, etc). What they care about is no more Trump mean tweets.
walkedaway··on Afghan President Ghani relinquishes power, Taliban form interim gov't
Or possibly how bad Biden and Gen Milley are at planning and military strategy.
walkedaway··on Bottled water is 3,500 times worse for the environment than tap water
> If you want to make people stop using water bottles you have to improve the water going to their house.

Reverse osmosis and similar systems are affordable especially compared to the cost of bottled water.

Also an 100% known and predictable effect.

walkedaway··on Wildfire restored a Yosemite watershed
"Only you can prevent forest fires" lays the wrong mindset that humans are the only causes of forest fires. I grew up with that mindset, took some education to realize that nature (lightning) creates fires as well, and that fires have occurred throughout history for the benefit of the ecosystem.

Why is that surprising? Have you not been paying attention to Biden's lack of mental capacity the past couple years?

My kids are older teenagers now, but I wish Apple would have had some of this 5-8 years ago. Good on Apple for investing in helping real world problems and issues instead of investing in silencing opinions they disagree with in the name of "misinformation."
walkedaway··on Big tech companies are at war with employees over remote work
Residential zones are always in demand. No reason commercial can't be rezoned, and developers are always looking for prime locations.
walkedaway··on 5 Habits of Highly Ineffective Remote Workers
> I find that without a face to read, I have a very difficult time navigating conversations.

I hear this a lot, and in my long experience I find that most people are terrible at reading others in the business world. I've seen so many misunderstandings because of people reading into others tone, body language, etc, instead of just listening to the words and interpreting them.

walkedaway··on Ad men sacked to improve gender pay gap win sex discrimination claim
I've been at two sizable (publicly traded, Fortune 300) companies where this has been documented in both Slack and Email. And I just facepalm wondering how management can be so ignorant of the law.
walkedaway··on What’s the matter with airports? (2011)
> Americans haven’t figured out how to behave on an escalator. If you’re not in a hurry, stand on the right and enjoy the ride, allowing those of us with a flight to catch to walk on the left.

OMG so much this. Maddening how oblivious Americans are to the basic tenets of getting along in a society. Not surprisingly, the same selfish, oblivious people behave the same way while driving their cars.

walkedaway··on Why is the university of California dropping the SAT?
So, data-driven, factual research is the domain of the extreme far right wing these days? I mean, I knew the left was illogical, irrational, and irresponsible, but didn't realize leftists were admitting it.
walkedaway··on Why is the university of California dropping the SAT?
The documentary Uncle Tom talks about the active work the press and educational circles do to suppress Thomas Sowell's work. His data-driven research and conclusions counter leftist educational and media institutions, and those institutions see Sowell as a threat to their power base. In other words, follow the money.

Truly a shame...

walkedaway··on Why is the university of California dropping the SAT?
Thomas Sowell has broken this down very well over the last 50 years.

walkedaway··on YouTube says it pulled Bolsonaro videos for Covid-19 misinformation
Seems to be a pattern on HN over the past couple years: if it doesn't fit a certain progressive narrative, then it gets flagged or downvoted. The irony to me is that's exactly what news should be - things that are new.
walkedaway··on Why won’t Americans get vaccinated?
Telling that you're being downvoted by HN community for asking a legitimate question.
walkedaway··on Why won’t Americans get vaccinated?
Because we humans have immune systems that have worked since our inception as a species. Common sense.
walkedaway··on Why won’t Americans get vaccinated?
> you have the federal government to blame for the exceptionally high quality of life you lead

If you were truly informed and educated as you claim you would know that our founding fathers had the foresight to anticipate the badness of government as a necessary evil (their words). We enjoy the high quality of life due to our constitution which enable the freedoms and sacrifice of Americans before us, despite the government's interference along the way.

walkedaway··on Serial swatter who caused death gets five years in prison
Agreed. Should be same punishment as a murder for hire. Didn't pull the trigger, but the intent from the swatter was there.

Let's please make an example of these lowlifes that think abusing public safety resources is an acceptable way to "get" people they disagree with.

walkedaway··on Intuit will no longer be a part of IRS Free File program
Can people in the EU chime in on this? My understanding is that is how France does it (just go to a website, pay what the gov't says you owe because the gov't has all the details).

> I'm not holding my breath.

Yeah I assumed back in the 80s this was a no brainer.

Edit: I see below that many from Sweden, UK, Germany have chimed in and basically said only the US is this stupid when it comes to federal and state income taxes. Thanks for the info.

walkedaway··on Facebook's “see no evil” strategy
> Actual socialist politics are not permitted in US discourse

We have multiple socialists elected to US Congress.

walkedaway··on Facebook users said no to tracking, and now advertisers are panicking
Ads still exist. Advertising has existed for a long time, effectively, without personal tracking. This will weed out the players from the wannabes.
walkedaway··on Full-time minimum wage workers can't afford rent anywhere in the US
That makes absolutely no sense. Of course minimum wage expands to mean "the minimum wage that some entry-level person should be required to receive." Entry level means young. That's exactly who the law should be for.

After entry level, it's up to the individual to level up and improve their employability and work their way up. At least that's the way it used to work, and boy did it work. Nowadays everyone wants the payday without having to put in the effort.
