wallst07··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
I understand this and agree, but how do you measure it objectively.

Usually it's one outspoken engineer with lots of experience and anecdotes but not a link between cause/effect.. just a lot of war stories and slowing others down.

wallst07··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
HN falls under the same cause/effect rise/fall of any other large community.

The larger it gets, the more fringe/outlier groups start to take over.

I think it's too nuanced of conversation topic to have a dedicated space.

All spaces turn into echo chambers with enough people. I could be wrong.

I'd be ok discussing with people NOT using AI at work as long as its not built around bashing AI. There are people I work with who still write code, I'm not going to downplay them.

It's mostly around navigating these nuances at work. Even what words to use "I built this" vs "LLM built this"

I know how to design large multi PR projects with multiple agents, but the ORG/LLM navigation , you can't learn by talking to AI.

off-topic: Sometimes I feel like applying at Costco as a SWE just to help fix their god awful tech, it's worse than 2000's e-commerce.

Lol I was thinking the same thing.

I wouldn't scold someone for thinking it, its ok to have floating thoughts. Just don't double down on them and start arguments over the internet with strangers.

wallst07··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
This has been talked about for years and years, has little to do with AI.

I've been at places where I went years hardly doing work on a average week. But I'm also good [at some things] so when it mattered I showed up, then didn't do anything for months.

Also, if you build a foundation of being very good, you can coast on that even longer (years) in the right situation. There are 1000s of stories of people doing nothing for years making six figures, easy.

Have you worked at a public company, or better yet one that went public while you worked there?

The amount of people working on regulation, compliance and other non-revenue generating responsibilities increases substantially.

Meta: This is a topic I'm very interested in reading about. Does anyone know where people can talk about how AI is changing how people in large orgs work.

I don't mean in a forum where everyone bashes AI, but actually discusses how to navigate this?

It's not here at HN.

How do you measure 'care'. If it's a tech org, it either works or it doesn't?

You might 'care' to add features nobody asked for? Or 'care' to spend longer than necessary to refactor something that doesn't need it.

wallst07··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
Bad analogy, it is more like they said they don't believe in texts but you can call any time and they'd love to help you move. But they won't answer your texts.
wallst07··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
Completely false, and this goes into reasons for performative activism.

Stop saying 'guys' is performative, it is not moving the needle at all on the big stuff. The strongest people also have strong wills, taking it or leaving it. They could be the best people to have on your side.

wallst07··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
I think you're trying to have your cake and eat it too.

I get what you're saying on paper, but in the workforce, that's not how things go down.

wallst07··on The Mythical Man-Month in the Age of AI
Counter argument is you rarely hear of sunk-cost fallacy coming into play.

I used to do the same thing without AI, I'd spend a week working on a task and only realizing at the end it was wrong, but because I spend so much time on it, I was incentived more to keep going and ignoring sunk-cost.

Now I don't care, it only takes me a an hour and I have no problems throwing it away and trying something else.

No, not really. Read the entire discussion here, it's a bunch of nerds prescribing what is best for common people, it's exhausting.

I'm not defending FB practices, I'm stating it has value beyond the hyperbole.

It's actually more than entertainment, you obviously don't use it so don't know.

They make plenty of money because of control over a product. This is just another in a long list of controls.

People don't like change, this will be a non-story in a year.

wallst07··on Show HN: SimCity, but with Permits
How's that different than Unions or COOPs? They also suffer from power struggle.

This is not a reflection on any type of wording of group activities, rather human nature.

wallst07··on Show HN: SimCity, but with Permits
HOAs are fine, what you hear is the small minority that make big news.

There are close to half a million of them, if only 1% had some news event yearly, you'd think they all were bad, they're not.

wallst07··on Show HN: SimCity, but with Permits
No, it's not. The HOA has bylaws and must follow them. They have members that are voted in.

You can list it's the actual negatives, but its not a whatsapp group with no laws.

wallst07··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
Sense isn't common.

Even in this forum you won't find consensus on what to do, it's all complaining and grandstanding.

I don't have a solution, but what I do know is that any idea here that doesn't involve human psychology and motivation will never suceed.

wallst07··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
If the neighbor is on the other side of the globe, hardly makes a difference to most people.

My actual neighbor, gets a talk then a call to the local enforcement agency if it doesn't improve.

wallst07··on Germany's far-right AfD: half a million internal documents leaked
No way I'm downloading 300GB of torrent text to run some prompts by either.

I would read a non AI generated article from a (hopefully unbiased) legitimate source. Hopefully providing some nuance that the world including HN lacks lately.

Ok, great who cares. I will use the best model regardless of cost or who "owns" it.

There is no point on using anything lesser and Mistral is a waste of time.

You are assuming wrong, and I'll make the counterclaim that others, like me, are hyper aware of how political decisions affect all areas of life and are tired of the same repeated rants. Some ideology will never be agreed to.

Since everything has some political lens and the same repeated talking lines continue, and go way off topic. The discussion becomes meaningless.

So that's my reason. You can even say that these are extreme and must be destroyed, that makes the point more clear on why the flags happen. It's not bots, its people.

A good sign that you are on the losing end of a argument is when you start to attack someone, you may need to look into that, or not, I don't care.

I highly doubt you will read any of these, god forbid you have someone close to you actually a victim of pedophilia.

Go ahead ping a mod, what did I saw that was wrong?

If you want to run to a parent or a teacher anytime your belief system is challenged that says more about you than me?

wallst07··on Tesla Roadster
No, it's not generally known as pedophilia.

There is a thread about about why posts like this get flagged...

This thread is the reason, it's like people off meds posting here about unrelated topics, crazy town.

Which one specifically, with evidence? And if you're saying the current admin is protecting them, the acts shouldn't have been occurring previously?
