wan_ala··on Reddit has been down for more than an hour
After a few hours I am now getting the error message "Failed to parse page JSON data: expected value at line 2 column 1" (I use libreddit so it might be different for you). I wonder what is going on over there.
wan_ala··on Google is screwed, even if it wins its antitrust case
Is Gizmodo a actual news source? It links to The Onion at the top part of the page, and The Onion links to Gizmodo at the top part of its page.
wan_ala··on Four thousand weeks
If you like that you might want to read the daodejing, which i think that quote came from.
wan_ala··on Flip Phones: Gen Z has a new ‘vintage’ technology to obsess over
I haven't had a flip phone in a while (or any phone for that matter), but I think flip phones are probably my favorite type of phones. They look sleek, you can easily check the time just by looking at them, and you can type without even looking at the screen. Cool to see flip phones getting more popular.
wan_ala··on Ask HN: Sites with the quality of Hacker News, but for more general topics?
For a project i am working on, I've thought about egalitarian-based moderation (i.e people vote on moderation decisions, there is no specific 'moderators'). It could prevent admin abuse and make it so that you don't need to hire mods.
wan_ala··on I'm shadow banned by DuckDuckGo and Bing
The statement isn't too far from the truth ngl. I think it'd probably be in the top 10 most famous C guides out there.
wan_ala··on Power substations vandalized in Washington state
The comment is deleted, did you figure out how? I'd like to know too.
wan_ala··on How to Befriend Crows
Excuse my ignorance, but what type of animal would eat a crow?
wan_ala··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2023?
Yeah, I think a lot of history of the russo-ukranian war is not known by many americans. Many people didn't even know there was a war until the invasion. I remember tensions building up a few months before the invasion and some people started talking about it (I knew a political dude online who was talking about it a few months before, he was saying something about how things could go down. I wasn't really interested but now I realize he was right (except for him supporting russia tho)).
wan_ala··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2023?
>* Twitter users will massively migrate to a new social network (and it won't be Mastodon) Maybe I am being too optimistic but it kinda seems like that a big chunk of twitter refugees will move to Mastodon. Maybe not all of them but a lot, like how right now Mastodon is slowly entering the mainstream as sites publish articles about it and many users are already switching to Mastodon. And how the other Twitter alternatives are barely talked about but Mastodon is being brought up as an alternative all the time.
wan_ala··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2023?
As someone who used ChromeOS for a year or so, I think its kinda cool that mainstream people are using Linux, but 1: They don't know they are using Linux. Most users dont even know what Linux is. 2: Not open source. 3: Not privacy respecting.
wan_ala··on America’s social and political turmoil during the 1910s and 20s
Yeah, i am pretty distrustful of any "news" website still reporting on low-hanging fruit such as trans swimmers.
wan_ala··on Show HN: Textual Markdown – a Markdown “browser” in the terminal
Thanks for making this! I have been wanting to see something like this but too lazy to make on myself lol.
wan_ala··on Big Tech Companies Join Linux in Effort to Kill Google Maps
tbh I would only trust it if the software worked so that they wouldn't be able to abuse it for tracking (i.e not centralized). Although i am not sure how you would implement that in a geolocation tool.
wan_ala··on Inventor of the world wide web wants us to reclaim our data from tech giants
He's been concerned with this type of stuff for a long time. There are plenty of articles about him talking about the NSA, tech giants, etc. I think he created a social media platform a few years ago as an alt to facebook.
wan_ala··on EFF Takes a Stance: San Francisco Shouldn’t Arm Robots
Having opinions on dystopian armed robots != being a bad organisation. Also isn't being pro-privacy an agenda too? They have always opposed the US government.
wan_ala··on Poll: Which Operating System do you mainly use?
Tails Linux
wan_ala··on Inflation Has Hit Tenants Hard. What About Their Landlords?
"Yeah all the poor people cant eat tonight but what about the rich?!" average New York Times headline
wan_ala··on Medium.com Competitor
This sounds awesome, is there a way to find out when it is released?
wan_ala··on Ancient virus may be protecting the human placenta
Does anybody know if there is a less vague date than "millions of years ago" as to when this retrovirus started becoming apart of human DNA? Were we even humans at the moment?
wan_ala··on Tell HN: Happy Thanksgiving
Absolutely! I love the minimalist design of HN. Hope they never pull a reddit and update their design to be 'modern'.
wan_ala··on Ask HN: What is the most impactful thing you've built?
Cool! C is my main language
wan_ala··on Ask HN: What is the most impactful thing you've built?
Thanks for making the web safer - sincerely, a web user
wan_ala··on Ask HN: What is the most impactful thing you've built?
What languages? I might have used some of your code lol
wan_ala··on Ask HN: What is the most impactful thing you've built?
I have not used your site, but I think it is awesome you are back! How did you get caught? Are there any privacy tips you have learned from the experience?
wan_ala··on Ask HN: What is the most impactful thing you've built?
Thanks for making this, it has been very fun for me.
wan_ala··on Ask HN: Do you recall any book or course that made a topic finally click?
3blue1brown's Bitcoin video helped me a lot in understanding bitcoin.
wan_ala··on What ever happened to webrings? (2015)
>Tor sites do all of this still. I like browing onion sites from time to time, typically personal sites. It is resemblant of the wild west days of the web, except most onion sites are for drugs.
wan_ala··on Jack Dorsey Unveils Bluesky Social, the Decentralized Twitter
How is this better than ActivityPub? Mastodon already is a decentralized Twitter
wan_ala··on Pëtr Kropotkin and Mutual Aid
It could tie into how neoliberal establishements are failing and people are looking for alternatives (which could be the reason that nazism is suddenly more popular). But yeah, I was pretty suprised seeing this post.
