wankle··on Google Authenticator now supports Google Account synchronization
Agreed, it seems bizarre to me that any company especially Google would roll out something like this.
wankle··on Google Authenticator now supports Google Account synchronization
I keep my codes on an encrypted thumb drive I store in a fire proof box along with important documents.

As for the OP, it sounds really convenient but convenience is what led to Code Red Worm in 2001.

wankle··on Gamers 50-plus are a growing force in the tech market
No 50+ gamers I know either use smart phones or consoles for gaming, well some use consoles. Smart phones suck for gaming, no tactile feel from virtual buttons.
wankle··on Is a Turing machine a real device or an imaginary concept?
When someone brings up Turing complete in a discussion about AI, refer them to "Turing machines aren't used in practice for several reasons.".
wankle··on There is no A.I.
Stack Overflow can do that for me too, and no Bill Gates negative karma is involved.
wankle··on There is no A.I.
> To be sure, what the technology does is unmistakably a form intelligence. > Computers playing chess is AI.

Computers doing anything are following the programming of their programmers. Without feeling and free will, there is no AI.

wankle··on The world would be happier with wobbly windows
Let it wobble.
wankle··on Microsoft plugging more ads into Windows 11 Start Menu
I'm loving Proton on Ubuntu.

Is it a cover, is the US expecting any impending major actions or disasters.
wankle··on Microsoft fixes 5-year-old Defender bug, reducing Firefox-related CPU use by 75%
Someone diverged the thread into Linux vs Mac. The point is, how did the evil Microsoft monolopy get away with not fixing this bug for so long.
wankle··on Microsoft fixes 5-year-old Defender bug, reducing Firefox-related CPU use by 75%
Windows can't be hibernated without issue. My wife had issues the past week already on Windows. She wants me to put Ubuntu back on the machine.

You seem to be confused, Linux is the most stable OS available for desktop or servers.
wankle··on Oracle free tier reclamation (avoidance)
It seems unusual to me that self-hosters are encouraged to waste resources to avoid having their VM's reclaimed when using the free Oracle Cloud tier.
wankle··on Valve shows a drop in Linux gamers for march, but the numbers are questionable
Because Windows at >90% of the world's entire personal computing market is totally OK.
wankle··on SpaceX moves Starship to launch site, and liftoff could be just days away
I like that it looks like a starship dreamed up in the 1950's.
wankle··on Google Drive does a surprise rollout of file limits, locking out some users
I'm not sure what you're asking? I'm happy to try and oblige, do you have a command I can run to answer your questions?
wankle··on Google Drive does a surprise rollout of file limits, locking out some users
I was thinking the same thing but I tend to create a large compressed backup file and upload that instead. My backup file is currently under 100 gigs, the most critical files not my whole system's files. If I backed up my gaming account (I don't need to since I use Steam Cloud) and compressed it, it'd probably only be another 50 to 100 gigs. This way I should never hit the 5 million file limit.

Having said that, I feel 5 million files is too low for a lot of people.

wankle··on Google Drive does a surprise rollout of file limits, locking out some users
> Having a limit of 5 million files is perfectly reasonable.

Is it? On this desktop I have 1.5 million files, "df -i" says I've used 1.1 million inodes and I have 61 million inodes free.

The 5 million file limit on Google Drive seems to be excessively low.

Note to Google, consider re-imagining your PhD's and MBA's as food service personnel.

wankle··on ChatGPT – The Revolutionary Bullshit Parrot
> So ChatGPT tells him what he wants to hear. He's using it as an extra engineer who always agrees with him.

I chuckled, it sounds like the plot from a B Sci-Fi movie.

wankle··on AI-enhanced development makes me more ambitious with my projects
Dice lists 10 times more Perl jobs than Rust jobs and almost 3 times more than Kotlin.
wankle··on BigQuery prices increasing by more than 100% for many users
Actually Lightsail halved their prices a few years ago.
wankle··on Had enough of Android? First 'Focal' based Ubuntu Touch is out
Gates and Jobs are why I don't use Windows or Mac.

Torvalds, Stallman, Gosling, they don't steal, they innovate.

wankle··on Had enough of Android? First 'Focal' based Ubuntu Touch is out
It's the only thing that makes me consider installing it.
wankle··on The Twitter API is now effectively unmaintained
Twitter I used for several years and may go back now that someone with common sense is at the helm but only ever heard of WeChat and what I heard was mostly negative.
wankle··on Tailscale Funnel now available in beta
It's what I do, Wireguard on a cheap VPS. It's plenty fast but does take learning the configuration which wasn't hard.
wankle··on There's something off about LED bulbs
gjsman-1000's point and yours make sense and somewhere on the page it was suggested to start running DC power just for LED lighting in homes. Until then, our new plan is to use LED light strips and stop buying LED bulbs. The idea is that the strips have an external power supply so I'm hoping the LED's will have the lifetime they deserve.
wankle··on There's something off about LED bulbs
https://www.stouchlighting.com/blog/light-comparison-led-lig....

"New LEDs can last 50,000 to 100,000 hours or more. The typical lifespan for an incandescent bulb, by comparison, is 1-5% as long at best (roughly 1,200 hours)."

I've never seen more than 15000 hours from an LED bulb at best.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incandescent_light_bulb

"The chart below lists values of luminous efficacy and efficiency for some general service, 120-volt, 1000-hour lifespan incandescent bulb"

I spent most of my life in incandescent bulb lighting and rarely remember changing a light bulb. LED bulbs I can remember changing multiple times in the last few years since we started using them.

It's almost like there's a conspiracy to convince consumers incandescent lighting didn't last long which is odd given the following:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centennial_Light#:~:text=The%2....

"The Centennial Light is the world's longest-lasting light bulb, burning since 1901, and almost never turned off."

wankle··on Italy moves to ban lab-grown meat to protect food heritage
> We could have equally banned internal combustion engines to protect the steam engine

That should actually have been done or better, Stirling Engines.

wankle··on Italy moves to ban lab-grown meat to protect food heritage
I Googled NIMBY. It seems like a non-conversation enhancing passive aggressive term.
wankle··on Ubuntu stops shipping Flatpak by default
Yes I was using the non-free version. It was working fine until I'd set the machines to auto-update then one day found out they had zero connectivity after an update. I thought about going around to each machine and manually trying to revert back whatever was in the updates that broke it and just decided to wipe and install Ubuntu back on them.
