wathef··on Watch Los Angeles get built, one building at a time (1880–2026)
Los Angeles had the largest public transportation network in the United States until we paved over it[1]. We had over 1,300 miles! You could've gone from Huntington Beach to Downtown and all the way up to Burbank. You can see many of the maps of Los Angeles at the public library[2]. I don't live there anymore, love that place though.

wathef··on Cloudflare outage should not have happened
an insulin pump is a good metaphor; insulin as a hormone has a lot of interactions and the pump itself, if not wanting to unalive its user, should (most do not) account for external variables, such as: exercise, heart rate, sickness, etc. these variables are left for the user to deal with, and in this case, is a subpar experience in managing a condition.
wathef··on Run Nix Based Environments in Kubernetes
congrats on the little one, here’s to many wonderful moments.
wathef··on Saturated fat: the making and unmaking of a scientific consensus (2022)
Not sure why you’re being downvoted, this is one of the best takes here. It sits squarely in the realm of evidence where the majority of these comments are anecdotal and they don’t translate to population level studies.
wathef··on Can ketones enhance cognitive function and protect brain networks?
A carbohydrate and protein have the same calorie content, around 4kcal per gram. Fat is 9kcal per gram.
wathef··on Haskell in Production: Standard Chartered
I may be wrong, but if I remember correctly Standard Charter uses their own “dialect” called Mu[1].

wathef··on Guide to Java Virtual Threads
Both of those (sum and products) are ADTs.
wathef··on Plant-based meat is turning out to be a flop
The problem with red meat isn't meat per se; all meat has saturated fat, some more than others. Reducing LDL cholesterol (reducing CVD risk) means increasing fiber and reducing saturated fat, and if someone chimes in saying that it's not casual, we have an excellent mendelian randomization study that gives us a pretty good link [1]. All plant-based meat alternatives, including cheeses, have high amounts of saturated fat from coconut oil, which isn't very good either.
