wavefunction··on Trump's Next Trade War Target: Chinese Students at Elite Schools
I would agree except that it's one hundred years later and there are Uighur re-education camps and social credit scores and new islands in the South China Sea with missile platforms and statements about reconquering Taiwan and... well.
wavefunction··on Antitrust Troubles Snowball for Tech Giants as Lawmakers Join In
That assertion seems harder to prove than the assertion that a 30% built-in cost leads to higher prices.

If anyone was too put out by Reddit's actions they could always start up their own site where they could sexualize minors or whatever else was dropped by Reddit.

wavefunction··on Tiananmen Square: China minister defends 1989 crackdown
Some of that is a put on, trolling people over something obviously silly. And some is real.
wavefunction··on A new credit bubble gets ready to burst
That's a very government centric definition but I prefer:

>Rent-seeking is an attempt to obtain economic rent (i.e., the portion of income paid to a factor of production in excess of what is needed to keep it employed in its current use) by manipulating the social or political environment in which economic activities occur, rather than by creating new wealth.

The important bit in rent-seeking is "rather than creating new wealth."

wavefunction··on Economists Are Obsessed with Job Creation – How About Less Work? (2017)
The WBO's global corruption index surely fails to take into account inter-national corruption. That corrupt resource extraction requires people outside the country interested in purchasing the outputs.
wavefunction··on How Stoicism can help us
I enjoy studying and considering stoicism but I have to think statements like >one of the biggest groups of people interested in it seems to be millennials who work in the tech industry

and considering a simplified description of stoicism

>the endurance of pain or hardship without the display of feelings and without complaint.

To be an indictment of our industry. We're not coal-miners. We're not picking out in the fields or roofing in the hot sun. Cafeterias and RSUs aren't hardships.

wavefunction··on Japanese drill ship fails to reach the earthquake-generating zone
I pointed out above the Deepwater figure is depth from ocean surface while the Chikyu figure is depth below the ocean floor, so as long as the depth of the ocean is ~20,000 feet where the Chikyu drilled to that depth, it all checks out.
wavefunction··on Japanese drill ship fails to reach the earthquake-generating zone
I suppose then it depends on how deep the ocean floor bed was below the ocean's surface where the Chikyu drilled that hole. If Nature is correct then it must have been in a spot of at least 20,000 ft of ocean depth (30,000deepwater - ~10,000chikyuBelowTheSeaFloor).
wavefunction··on Adventures with ffmpeg and color ranges
Picturing The Zuck leading two mutant mandogs on leashes: the audience is horrified to realize they're Yann LeCun and John Carmack, though 'heavily modified' and almost unrecognizable in their snarling ferocity.

"This fist holds the Ego. This fist holds the Id. I bring you a new existence: the GlobalCoin. I came up with that myself. As Super-Ego."

wavefunction··on Coverage of a Disinformation Operation Against 2019 EU Parliamentary Elections
You mention 42, then a thousand, and then we're talking real effects. Twitter gets analyzed by professional analysts. It also gets digested without any analysis by its users.
wavefunction··on These may be the first images of dogs, and they’re wearing leashes (2017)
Ancient humans probably knew this too because many examples of carvings and paintings were made in places protected from the elements, like caves and overhangs. They probably also decorated more exposed areas that haven't survived as well, as you note.

Mesa Verde as one example includes such cultural works dating back to 600CE. https://www.nps.gov/meve/index.htm

wavefunction··on Apple removes game after Chinese company cloned, trademarked, requested takedown
Apple recognized Chinese claims of IP over the rest of the world.
wavefunction··on Apple removes game after Chinese company cloned, trademarked, requested takedown
It is overdue but it's being prosecuted under a flawed understanding of almost all aspects of the situation and inane and unfocused policy. You tackle China first while building an economic coalition of interests with shared goals. A sane and competent person would focus on one task at a time and not undercut the strategic interests required to achieve that task, achieving perhaps effectively nothing.
wavefunction··on Amazon shareholders reject facial recognition ban
I would quibble with your basic premise of facial recognition improving these things or even if these things are worthy goals. At least from my personal and selfish interest I don't perceive any improvement offered for myself or society. From a perspective of a shareholder/interested-party looking to maximize X via Z then yeah it makes sense.
wavefunction··on Study Pinpoints Source of Banned Gas That Saps Ozone Layer: Eastern China
If people won't respond to reason, should they be reasoned with? The danger of ego and the id.

Yet still the danger grows nearer.

wavefunction··on Millennials and Gen Z Increasingly Pessimistic About Their Lives, Survey Finds
Massive amounts of innovation have coincided with the activities of despotism, and far more and far longer than the historical record provides for "capitalism."
wavefunction··on Self-Driving Trucks Will Carry Mail in U.S.
USPS is forced into this arrangement by Congressional mandate they pre-fund pension agreements. We could fund the USPS as a social good, if people would realize what is actually good in their lives and worth funding.
wavefunction··on Self-Driving Trucks Will Carry Mail in U.S.
The USPS is largely funded by the direct-mail advertising industry, all the "junk mail" that ends up in your favorite mail receptacle. It's sad but that's the state of affairs Congress has forced them into. Switching to electronic delivery makes it much easier to avoid those promotions and also removes the primary revenue source for the USPS.
wavefunction··on Millennials and Gen Z Increasingly Pessimistic About Their Lives, Survey Finds
>capitalism, which brings prosperity, innovation and peace to the world

I am not sure this assertion holds up under historical inquiry but that's my opinion.

wavefunction··on $500k a Year yet Struggling? Let's Do a Double Take
I mean, this very linked article lays out the finances of some people who are doing just that and it appears to be the result of some very expensive personal choices rather than a fact of life.

wavefunction··on A Norwegian town built a giant mirror to deflect the sun (2017)
I experienced serious anxiety the first time I drove through North Texas (flat as a pancake), having grown up in Colorado with the mountains ever present. It was a weird time in my life and... I was coming from Colorado, but I felt like I was going to slide right off the earth with such a flat horizon surrounding me.

I reject your Wikipedia links as authoritative sources on what constitutes a journalist as well as your contention that he's doing anything other than dumping documents (selectively).
