wavefunction··on Scooter mechanic, once homeless, says cheap rides now help him pay rent
I assume they would be required to use bike lanes in most American cities. I am concerned about the liability involved. A local journalist here in Austin was hit by a drunk guy on a scooter badly enough to dent her driver-side door and render the door inoperative. Then he claimed she hit him. His auto insurance, if he has any doesn't cover his usage of electric scooters.

So she was facing a liability for fixing the car, perhaps some sort of insurance fraud on his part, AND her insurance was going to list an incidence of her "striking a pedestrian." Fortunately she found out there was some CCTV footage that exonerated her, but all of that just so some drunk a--hole can zoom around on a scooter and the scooter companies make money?

It could be over radio, analog or digital. Or perhaps some other em frequency. Or hyper-sonic transmission. Perhaps x-ray frequencies despite the poor irradiated cleaning lady. It doesn't have to be a script-kiddie solution.

wavefunction··on How Criminals Steal $37B a Year from America’s Elderly
how is a distant relative going to find anyone's cellphone number? That makes absolute no sense, since cellphone numbers aren't posted in a public directory that distant relatives might honestly peruse.

I imagine the Yellow River has suffered numerous catastrophic floods in its history, and some must certainly 'line up' with various other historical and ahistorical events.
wavefunction··on Lime and Bird are growing rapidly
They're a menace to society given the un-insured nature of their services. A local journalist had some scooter doofus run into her vehicle badly enough to damage the ability to open the driver's side door, then he turned around and claimed she hit him. So she was facing having a record of striking a pedestrian on her driver's and insurance records and was only saved by footage from a surveillance camera. What a joy!
wavefunction··on Missing Emirati princess 'planned escape for seven years'
It would have required another Trump administration scandal for that. Just look at the attempts to kidnap and serve Gulen up on a plate to Erdogan. The US is a big country with a lot of people that aren't ok with kidnapping.

Khashoggi came from a powerful and influential family in the KSA, plus he was a journalist for the Washington Post.

That's true of many of these arab regimes as well. Hence MBS' consolidation of power recently, for example. A monarchy is meaningless if you can blow off the power of the monarch. I am deeply sympathetic to the plight of their peoples.

Many people in Silicon Valley are interested in making sure the kings of those countries are investing a good portion of their money back into their tech ventures.
wavefunction··on Why only 2% of Chinese pay any income tax
What a weird and artificial statistic to bring up. I don't believe it has any actual meaning given that the individuals have met their legal obligations for income taxes.
wavefunction··on The Octopus Is Smart as Heck, But Why?
A couple of reports in the past few years and then you extrapolate that backwards given that it's statistically unlikely to be a recent development and you've got a pretty remarkable situation of communal nurseries over millions of years.

I doubt that, I guess. I checked into the program in Detroit and you had to live in the property for a year. Now maybe people got around that somehow but that's not how the program was structured.

wavefunction··on What was the role of the blacksmith in medieval society?
That's the answer I was expecting. It seems strange to me to use the end of the High Medieval era and extrapolate that back across the whole.

When did England invade France in the Medieval era?
wavefunction··on What was the role of the blacksmith in medieval society?
In many feudal societies, metal was a controlled substance especially among the peasant/serf populations. If you look at the architecture of most residences from the medieval era: thatch, wattle-and-daub and not a lot of hinges or nailed together things.

wavefunction··on For Decades, Southern States Saw Thanksgiving as an Act of Northern Aggression
This is an interesting subject. The 4th of July is not celebrated in Utah as it is in other states: instead that same energy and celebration goes into Utah's "Pioneer Days." This divergence from the rest of the nation provides some insight into the history of Utah and the people who settled it, and their relationship to the greater United States. Personally, I don't think it reflects positively but that's just my opinion on another interesting divergence in national tradition.
