weare138··on Show HN: Hurston-1 open source TTS that speak Southern American and Afro-English
We as an industry should not be working or associating with Bill Gates anymore or anyone else that was associated with Epstein and his cohorts. I just assume anyone still working with these people is complicit and needs to be thoroughly investigated.
weare138··on Developers Are Using AI to Strip Ads and Tracking from Smart TVs
Don't get me wrong I don't disagree with what you and OP are saying in principle but at the time we do have to be realistic about the situation. These smart TVs run proprietary software stacks and hacking them to remove the ad and tracking 'features' is definitely a grievous violation of the end user license agreements.

If this trend became widespread enough to have an effect on these companies profits I would bet money the vendors would just go the legal route and crack down on it. All these LLM providers do retain logs of your sessions and these vendors would easily be able to subpoena those records. Once they start dragging people into court and mass filing cease and desist orders that's going to end it.

But it's still driving sales. I'm from genx and did a stint in the corporate world. The decision makers at these corporations are looking at it solely and myopically from an analytics perspective and trying to make the line go up. Make the line go down. That's how you get through to these people.

Stop buying smart TVs. Companies will stop making them if consumers stop buying them and creating a market for them. Look for commercial digital signage displays. You can find dumb TVs with nice screens or ones that just run a stock Android.
weare138··on Firefox Enterprise
So where is it? It just says 'Request a Demo'. There's no download. Is this a commercial product/service?
weare138··on Why were Victorian elites so effective?
They weren't 'effective'. It was colonialism. The Victorian 'elites' just stole everything that wasn't nailed down and didn't need to work as a result which was a system that eventually failed. There's a reason the monarchies and feudalism failed.

weare138··on Why do tech CEOs sound like doomsday cult leaders?
If not cult why cult shaped?
weare138··on Pop!_OS bans AI-generated code from much of its codebase
Unless you have some examples this is a straw man argument.
weare138··on Religious scholars met with Anthropic
No but all those companies and the investors' money did disappear because that's how a bubble works. Industries don't create bubbles, the companies in them do.
weare138··on America.gov
I like how the Privacy page says 'No personal information. America.gov helps prevent you from sharing personal information before you send it' but then gives uploading your passport as an example on the main page.
weare138··on Astra for Law
Everyone involved is about to get a swift and thorough introduction to the world corporate contract lawyers. But don't worry, they're extremely sympathetic and understanding when you flub a multi-million dollar corporate contract and will happily refund that money.

weare138··on I spent $220 on Google app ads and 60% of the installs were robots
Hypothetically you would have already paid for the ads before your account gets suspended/banned then hypothetically Google just keep sending you automated replies denying your requests for support until you give up or lawyer up. And when you consider the shear scale Google's adtech networks run at, this would add up fast and generate revenue over costs. Hypothetically

I keep hearing this same story over and over. It's starting to sound like that's just Google's business model.
weare138··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
To give you an idea just how much phone traffic was being routed through that building, they had a major power failure at that site and it took down most of the north eastern US's phone network:

On September 17, 1991, management failure, power equipment failure, and human error combined to disable AT&T's central office switch at 33 Thomas. More than five million calls were blocked, and the Federal Aviation Administration private lines were also interrupted, disrupting air traffic control to 398 airports serving most of the northeastern United States.

I was curious and checked out the wikipedia page on CYP2D6 and it says CDB is also a strong CYP2D6 inhibitor but I don't have a formal background in this stuff.

weare138··on I wanna live an NPC life
be an npc. drive a boring car—who gives a fuck? have a boring job. do nothing after work. why do you have to do something after work? do something because you feel like doing it, not because you feel like you have to.

That's just being an adult.

weare138··on 'Mad honey' that can stop your heart is being sold online
You could always this stuff online.
weare138··on Will you have spent more of your life with computers than your family?
You haven't met my family. Half the reason I got into this stuff when I was young was to get away from them.
weare138··on Ask HN: Why is every company encorporating AI everywhere?
To make the line go up.
weare138··on OpenAI’s accidental attack against Hugging Face is science fiction that happened
There will inevitably be some people who dismiss this story as a dishonest marketing trick by OpenAI to make their models sound terrifyingly effective. I found 81 instances of the term “marketing” in the Hacker News discussion of the incident.

But a marketing stunt isn't the only possibility. Until this is all verified by investigators or 3rd party experts we can't rule out an act of corporate espionage either. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

weare138··on IDEs are done, and they are not coming back
And back when modern IDEs became a thing we were told code editors like vi and emacs were dead.

weare138··on Claude Code is steganographically marking requests
But what's stopping someone from modifying or injecting code into the client to bypass this 'restriction'? This type of security should be implemented server-side and at the network perimeter not in the client, especially one written in TypeScript.
weare138··on Xsnow "protestware" in Debian
The issue with that claim is xsnow already displayed the Ukrainian flag regardless. And it's in no way a critical app most people would even have installed to begin with. I had no idea it was even still being maintained.
