webdood90··on The Mythical Man-Month in the Age of AI
It's okay if it did both. The pre-AI world was not some hellscape - people felt they had a purpose. Not so much now.
webdood90··on The Mythical Man-Month in the Age of AI
> I have been focusing a lot more on testing and "manual" validation than on reviewing individual lines of code.

Same, but there is a reason I did not choose to work in QA so this sucks too

webdood90··on CSS-Tricks has a new owner
How does one pull a 6 figure salary from a blog site in 2026?
webdood90··on SimCity, but with Permits
> Density increases and ubiquitous transit result in HIGHER levels of housing shortages.

Wow, that's a new one

webdood90··on More on Anthropic's Scion ripping off Mononoke
Yeah, I simply could not give a shit less about any of this. Everyone involved has furthered the agenda of awful companies that harm society.
webdood90··on I know why the mathematicians weep
Tech workers are a small subset of the population that have been able to live very privileged lives when compared to everyone else.

I think the average person lives a much harder life and has been doing so for a while. Should we really be surprised by the lack of empathy when folks in tech had little to show for the common man this whole time?

webdood90··on Anthropic's Scion is heavily inspired by Mononoke
> I think it is the duty of any responsible engineer to look for and cite prior art and related work, if only to compare notes.

Maybe 5 years ago that would be the expectation but all etiquette has been thrown out the window with AI. I think you expect too much.

webdood90··on Thinking will become a hobby
Yeah, you're right. Best to keep your head in the sand and assume best case scenario.
webdood90··on Thinking will become a hobby
Can you not look back a year or even 6 months to see the progress that has been made? The pace of change is incredible.

How does that not lead you to same conclusion that everyone else is having? That this is only going to improve.

It's so shortsighted to make an assessment only on what exists today.

webdood90··on The mental health of young men is declining. Experts warn it could get worse
I find this hard to believe without seeing the data. I finished high school when the first iPhone was released. It was absolutely awful for me and many folks I grew up with.

I cannot imagine how much more difficult it would have been with social media and cameras everywhere like it is today.

> I don't buy the idea that young people specifically have some major crisis while everybody else is doing fine

You can't imagine the stress and anxiety that is fabricated by immature minds from being on the internet all of the time?

webdood90··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
Yes, EV's solve one of the many negative impacts of cars. It's not some magic bullet.

They still depend on minerals that require destructive mining from equipment that runs on fossil fuels, still use rubber tires, still has tons of plastics that are made with petroleum, still dependent on a power grid mainly sustained by fossil fuels...

We should be thinking bigger than this, even. Walk, ride a bike, or take public transit whenever possible. If it's not possible, try to move somewhere where it is.

We must be willing to be slightly inconvenienced for the greater good instead of arguing about which type of car to drive. People don't want to have that conversation, though.

webdood90··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
Yes, let's focus on the .35% we give to NASA.
webdood90··on Warren Buffett Steps Down as Berkshire Chairman, Names Son to Replace Him
This is an incredibly sad perspective to have. We have to have higher standards than this, man.
webdood90··on Trump rejects call by CEOs of Anthropic, OpenAI and xAI to slow AI down
> Maybe it makes sense to take a risk.

Holy shit, society needs to eat people like this. We're all being driven off a cliff by insanely naive tech bros.

We're all being impacted by the decisions of a few people. World altering stuff, and there is nothing we can do to stop it. I can only observe these crazy comments from HN and wait for it all to fall apart. It's maddening.

webdood90··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
> Are you intellectually prepared to believe that Claude Code is as dangerous as cigarettes

Yes. Death is just one of the results. There are many, many other ways this could dangerously impact children.

webdood90··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
The point is that society's priorities are messed up. Throwing your hands in the air and taking the path of least resistance is never going to lead to change.

The world is literally on fire but the average person simply doesn't give a shit because they don't want to be inconvenienced.

webdood90··on ChatGPT Images 2.5
Coming to HN to read comments on releases like this reminds me that there is a small, vocal minority that is pushing so hard for more and more features like this.

The majority of the world does not want or need any of this, yet the nerds in SF that can hardly hold a conversation with another human being are pumping it out as quickly as they can.

I truly think we're fucked.

webdood90··on Google avoids a breakup of its ad tech business
The system should serve the people, not a small minority of concentrated players. If you can't see how the system is manipulated in their favor, you are part of the problem.
webdood90··on Starbase, LA
> you’re demonstrating how far your head is in the sand

Interesting. Perhaps ironic?

If only society cared about genuinely good people like they seem to care about Musk. It's puzzling.

webdood90··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
> at a large healthcare organization

Isn't there kind of an inherit bias here where on-site healthcare workers would have vastly different job requirements than remote workers?

webdood90··on The Amazon tax
It's a local business to nearly everyone in the US. Anyways, it's not a local shop as the person you replied to called out.

Shopping at Amazon perpetuates the monopolization and consolidation of players in the economy. That means less competition. That means less incentive to improve the value they provide.

Seems pretty clear to me that shopping with Amazon makes things worse for everyone in the long run.

webdood90··on On AI regulation and messaging
What in the world could possibly compel you to shill for this man?
webdood90··on How to Make a Nintendo 64 Game in 2026
Run-of-the-mill. Ya know, a normal perpetuator of war profiteering. I mean he's your standard enabler of civilian bombing. Simply an average propagandist. Just a regular guy!
webdood90··on Fed's Kashkari says 'now is the time to start slowly moving' rates up
Lazy, regurgitated take. House prices then were also 1/10 of what they are today.
webdood90··on AI makes programming differently difficult
You must really have your head in the sand if you truly believe AI will not soon be very close to, if not better than, humans at writing code.
webdood90··on Are we offloading too much of our thinking to AI?
I would agree. At least previously we could pretend that we were developing a craft in the process.
webdood90··on Are we offloading too much of our thinking to AI?
The system does not reward deep understanding. It's too slow.

An analogy that I think helps describe how I feel about it all:

AI is like having cheat codes in a video game. You don't have to try hard and develop a deep understanding of how the game works. You aren't challenged anymore and it doesn't feel like you earned winning the game.

It doesn't matter because nobody cares. Businesses truly do not care. You are a cog, a means to an end. It's only about "winning". Now it's no longer fun to play the game.

webdood90··on Spotify killed the thrill of the hunt
> I did not live through that era

Then you probably don't fully understand where he's coming from, do you?

webdood90··on Spotify Killed the Thrill of the Hunt
So true - same for me. Maybe because I'm older now? Not sure.
webdood90··on Spotify Killed the Thrill of the Hunt
I think this translates to a few different mediums. I'm thinking about modern matchmaking in video games today.

I used to play a game called SOCOM II back on the PS2 and it was all lobby based. You had to jump around to find the right lobby with the game mode you liked, find people to play with and build community. There was time between games for banter.

Now everything is automatic and instantaneous. It has its advantages, just like with music, but something was definitely lost.
