what··on Richest 0.1% (8M) produce more carbon pollution than 3.5B
> large portions of companies are held by the general public in much smaller quantities via 401ks, pensions, etc.

Considering everyone is in index (or mutual) funds these days, do they actually own any shares in the underlying companies? I’m not sure they do? The fund surely owns shares of various companies, but the holders of the fund aren’t shareholders in the underlying companies.

Perhaps this is a silly point to make, but the fund providers will show up as 10% owners if the general public has any significant stake in these companies.

what··on Dayjob: Tax – evaluating AI agents on 50 professional tax assignments
As an American, it is bonkers to me too. Last year my former employer did not issue me a w-2. I called the IRS to ask them what to do. They said they had all the information but can’t release it to me until after the filing deadline. Instead I was told to use form 4852 to estimate and file an amended return if my estimate was wrong once they give me the numbers they have. Worst part is you can’t efile when you file with form 4852.

Anyway, my point is that for 95% of people they have all the information already and you shouldn’t have to file.

what··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
Most people aren’t interested in vibing and maintaining their own bespoke apps.

But also they probably want to use this app on their phone and other devices. So the either have to make it a web app, become a server admin and pay for hosting. Or they have to buy a Mac and pay for the developer program and hope they pass App Store review so they don’t have to reinstall every days.

what··on Websites Should Be Printable
Why would you need color to read and understand code?
what··on US designates helium as a critical material
Yes, the sale only recently concluded, but it’s been in the works for decades. The most recent being The Helium Stewardship Act of 2013, which Congress passed and required the sell off to happen by 2021 or something.
what··on Anthropic S-1
Sort of? They have “cost of revenue” which is compute and salaries (and whatever) for serving inference, then “research and development” which is cost of compute and salaries for training, then “sales and marketing”, then “operations”. R&D is like half the expenses.
what··on Anthropic S-1
Most people have no interest in fixing the leaky faucet themselves, even if the already knew how and didn’t need an LLM to explain how. They’d rather pay someone and do something else with time saved.
what··on Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
Look at the label on it and it will tell you who paid for the book. It’s likely your local library and other city/county programs. Donate to them instead.
what··on Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
All of the books I’ve received through this program have been paid for by the local library and other city funds.

I can also walk into the library and there will be a shelf of free childrens books. Not used, brand new. Stacks of them to take home and keep.

The engine already existed, our public library system.

what··on Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
> initial order volume

None of the books you get through this program are new releases. But they are printed special for imagination library.

what··on Show HN: Steal My Bitcoin
Maybe link to the argument? I can only find two comments from you on that post and only one person replied. That one reply isn’t from a “thought leader” either.
what··on Xbox Turns Down Netflix $500M Offer
Usually means your comments are getting flagged by other users. I’m not going to dig through your comments to speculate on why, but I don’t think there are any automated filters that will kill only some of your comments.
what··on We should be more ambitious with the software we build
The latest of the three commits in the repo:

> 413,963 files changed

> +2,908,538

> -3,423,007

How is anyone supposed to audit that? I doubt you’ve looked at even a small fraction of the code, if any. Especially since this commit is two days after the second. Pure vibes.

what··on Listen and read USA nuclear forces Emergency Action Messages, heard on 11175 kHz
What’s the significance of the first six characters? They repeat them multiple times before reading off the full message multiple times.
what··on Woman charged with computer fraud due to scam CashApp account being in her name
That’s a lot of words to say absolutely nothing.
what··on Show HN: Steal My Bitcoin
I thought it was trivial to exploit and surely costs less than $500 in tokens?
what··on Show HN: Steal My Bitcoin
The exploit is supposedly so trivial that everyone needed to take down their services until they could patch? There should be nothing to give away here, which I think is the point. Either it’s trivial and you swipe the $500 or it’s not and you save it (assuming you have it). In the latter case you shouldn’t really be worried, since they won’t burn an exploit on you either.
what··on Show HN: Steal My Bitcoin
> handing over a functional exploit

I thought the exploit was trivial and we all need to be extremely worried and take down our php services until a patch? So what exactly are you handing over?

> I, and many of my friends and cooks could take this easily.

Extreme doubt.

what··on Bringing uv and ty together
Unhinged. Linting and type checking are not concerns of a package manager.
what··on Woman faces six years in prison over Cash App account she never opened
If he was able to get to his car and retrieve his gun and shoot at them, it seems very unlikely that the “two bouncers rushed him in the parking lot”. He could have just driven away. Much more likely he was angry about being kicked out and went back with his gun and then the “two bouncers rushed him”.
what··on Woman charged with computer fraud due to scam CashApp account being in her name
Can you name a country where public transit is free?

I think a better goal would be to not have to travel across the city for basic needs and services. Would reduce congestion even more.

what··on Woman charged with computer fraud due to scam CashApp account being in her name
Sort of? The people using them (driving) pay significant gas taxes, plus parking permits, and other things.
what··on Woman charged with computer fraud due to scam CashApp account being in her name
> Seriously, just take it out of my taxes. I'm happy to work to fund public transportation.

Why don’t you just write a check to your transit authority every year then?

what··on Tell HN: I unknowingly broke the PHP RCE embargo. I am sorry.
I would assume he didn’t read anything in the repo. It also requires disabling ASLR.
what··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
Too old to edit… after restarting my phone all chains are rejected.
what··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
Yes.
what··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
My phone still accepts 3 of the 14 chains. So something is broken.
what··on There isn't an easy exploit for this PHP vulnerability
Neither of those are Claude. Checkmate.
what··on Security Disclosure
Not sure where you see TripAdvisor on there? And what even is bilt?
what··on Code is clay now
> Before I had to dig specs of an application out of a client's mind and try to form them into software with a full-ass team. Now we can pretty much "just" give them Claude and teach them to describe what they want and iterate to get something that maybe resembles an MVP but in more cases is just an interactive UI spec we can use as a reference to build the actual tool.

What are they paying you for if you’re just having your clients vibe code their own apps?
