whatupdave··on Show HN: SQRL – Anti-spam rules language Twitter acquired in 2018, open-sourced
That's super cool. I worked on Smyte and have wanted to replace the language with something very similar to what you're describing. I'd love to learn more about it.
whatupdave··on Go 1.13: xerrors
Have to be careful here, this would send phone numbers into logs files and other potential downstream services which is a bit of a GDPR nightmare now.
whatupdave··on Farm Hack: worldwide community of farmers that build and modify our own tools
I've always thought this too but I haven't come up with a better plot device
whatupdave··on SpaceX plans worldwide satellite Internet with low latency, gigabit speed
the article states that they'll be ~800 miles up, so about 8ms there and back
whatupdave··on Show HN: CSS ICON, an icon set crafted by pure CSS
Here's a helpful video on the topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krbKkLPXwlQ
whatupdave··on Show HN: Neural network trained to generate GitHub repository names
Someone should build something like this, based off startup domain names, cross-checked with availability.
whatupdave··on Rescuing Resque again (2015)
I almost alway use Que [1] now. It uses postgres advisory locks instead of Redis so one less dependency to worry about. You probably only need Redis if you're running a tonne of jobs.

whatupdave··on Assembly is shutting down December 6, 2015
All the source code and public data is still available. Some teams might still choose to run the software.

whatupdave··on Side projects
It can be tough to stay motivated while working alone. If you're happy to share the success with other people you could build it with the help of the assembly.com community.
whatupdave··on Jsfmt – Like Gofmt, but for JavaScript
This is awesome. I want this for ruby.
whatupdave··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
If you have the time to help build it, there's one being built here co-op style: https://assemblymade.com/party-box

whatupdave··on Show HN: Add smart notifications, digests and read receipts to your app
OP here. We built this on Assembly. The code is open and we'd love if people got involved to help building it. Check it out on https://github.com/asm-products/readraptor
whatupdave··on A Gmail Workflow
Looks good now
whatupdave··on Coderwall (YC W12) launches Assembly
Great points, here's some of our thinking around this:

1) The voting is not a judgement of people's contributions, it's more the community's valuation of a particular piece of work. The votes help prioritise the importance of a task or feature which can then be claimed by anyone who completes the work.

2) It's a tricky thing, what is the idea worth? 1%, 2%, 10%? 5% felt about right to us but we'll definitely be reviewing this over time.

3) We're going to actively keep WIPs small where we can to help avoid this problem. We also have a core team that helps guide the community towards a shared vision. They can promote certain tasks so they attract more upvotes which in turn makes them more enticing for people to complete.

Thanks for the feedback, we're expecting to do a lot of iterating and working with the community to keep evolving the process.

whatupdave··on Apps, made better by everyone
To ensure collaboration is easy the code is open-source. To ensure contributors get paid for their work we'll run a hosted version and allow companies to run it themselves with a commercial license.
whatupdave··on Apps, made better by everyone
Non-technical people can definitely contribute to the apps. For one if it's their idea, they get an immediate stake in future profits. There is also a lot of marketing and strategy work that goes into any successful product. The community around each product will vote the relative merits of each contribution. Basically, if someone submits work that is deemed good, they will receive a stake in profits.

In terms of where it lies on the idea sourcing to building spectrum, I would say it's definitely leaning towards building successful products. There's no shortage of good ideas floating around, we want to help organise people together to build great products and push those products to succeed.

whatupdave··on I want to fork everything
Nice catch! We accidentally had it private. It's up now here: https://github.com/assemblymade/support-foo
whatupdave··on 30(500) Redirect Blame
Amazing.
whatupdave··on List of Online Services EA Has Shut Down
Yep. And most likely you wont be able to play SimCity 5 in 5 years time.
whatupdave··on What EA could have done to help Sim City
Minecraft seems to strike the right balance here. Authenticate players on public servers to avoid spoofing other accounts, but also allow people to run their own private servers and disable online mode. Granted this enables piracy but I'm sure it hasn't put a dent in their sales.
whatupdave··on Minecraft Environmental Lighting Experiment
This is really cool. It would definitely add to the immersion of the game.
whatupdave··on Minefold (YC W12) launches Feed The Beast servers
Thanks for the kind words! We are storing logs and metrics for individual servers, and we're working on ways for people to access them.

I'm sorry that you had a bad expereince with your upload. I'm overhauling the upgrade process as we speak to ensure that worlds like yours upload cleanly.

We have a few ideas about configuring and installing additional mods. However, FTB is our first open source Funpack (https://github.com/minefold/funpack-feed-the-beast-direwolf2...) If you poke around there, submit an issue or preferably a pull request, we'll publish your changes.

Thanks again for the support!

whatupdave··on Dropbox deployment for front-end devs
