whiterabbit··on Navdy: HUD for your car
I agree. Navdy should round up all the people in Werner Herzog's texting documentary, ask them to endorse their product, and post that video on their website.
whiterabbit··on Navdy: HUD for your car
From The Wikipedia entry on mobile phones and driving: "The NHTSA considers distracted driving to include some of the following as distractions: other occupants in the car, eating, drinking, smoking, adjusting radio, adjusting environmental control, reaching for object in car, and cell phone use."

When I was a kid and my dad was driving and had to make a left turn or perform some other maneuver that required his full attention, he'd ask everyone in the car to be quiet. This was a man that raced automobiles as a hobby and worked in professional racing at the highest levels his entire life.

whiterabbit··on Ask HN: Buying a cheap laptop without an OS?
The cost of the Windows license is partially offset by the crapware bundle the manufacture infects the machine with, so you won't save much buying a blank PC and your options will be severely limited. However, you may still be able to get a refund on the license post-purchase, if you're dedicated (and lucky):

whiterabbit··on Ask HN: Web designers: do you consider Adobe CS5 necessary?
It's not possible to read a CS5 PSD with CS3. If you don't follow Adobe's upgrade path you're out of business (which means a great opportunity for GIMP).

whiterabbit··on Ask HN: Who can down-vote comments and/or submissions?
Judging from the empirical evidence my own comments afford me, this ability is safeguarded for only the most short-sighted and humor-deprived HN users. (Bait.)
whiterabbit··on GIMP Single-Window Mode Almost Ready, Hardware Acceleration Planned
That's funny; I use GIMP daily and I've always thought I was very much looking forward to the single-window interface on my multiple-screen non-virtual desktop environment. I guess I was wrong.
whiterabbit··on GIMP Single-Window Mode Almost Ready, Hardware Acceleration Planned
God be praised.
whiterabbit··on Ask HN: Web designers: do you consider Adobe CS5 necessary?
Photoshop is necessary, but in my experience CS3 is usually adequate. CS5 only becomes necessary due to lock-in.

I use GIMP whenever possible. That's maybe 50%. The UI is maddening, but this is a big step in the right direction:

whiterabbit··on Ask HN: What do you do while code is compiling?
This.
whiterabbit··on Is the lack of computer security due to programmer laziness and/or incompetence?
Implementing security measures usually provides little short-term return on time invested. Feasibility is not the issue.
whiterabbit··on I don't understand why anyone would use Node.js
I think everyone here will back you up on that, but don't infer that zinxq is advocating choice by technical dogma. I read their post as simply asking for an explanation for node.js's accelerating popularity; of course there are many factors, but its ability to reduce lexical context switching is obviously a major component. To argue otherwise would be ill-advised.
whiterabbit··on I don't understand why anyone would use Node.js
By "however many languages fit the various pieces best," did you mean the most or the fewest?
whiterabbit··on I don't understand why anyone would use Node.js
I stand corrected.
whiterabbit··on I don't understand why anyone would use Node.js
Ideally, would you write your web application using one language, or ten?

And that is how it's relevant. Any developer who can't grasp this concept has no place working for a company producing web-based software.

whiterabbit··on I don't understand why anyone would use Node.js
You can't program the client in Java.

The security hole was an egregious error on the part of Dropbox, but the text of the CTO's response seems right on the money to me. Should "EffectCheck" be renamed "DumbDown?"

I don't think there's anything new, but it's a fantastic product.
