whythismatters··on Show HN: rStation – A shared research lab for your AI agents
This is cool, maybe support one or two humanities research problems? Cf. the article discussed at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49835531
whythismatters··on Codex CLI installs a persistent, self-updating background daemon by default
Today I used Claude Desktop after not having used it for a while. It ran bash commands on my machine, like starting brew services etc. It did not have that capability before (I used to hook up some mcp to allow selective file editing), and nobody warned me that it currently has. Shady tactics, very invasive, freaked me out.
whythismatters··on Codex CLI installs a persistent, self-updating background daemon by default
Same with their desktop app by the way, absolutely infuriating.
whythismatters··on Pointing AI at archives found a forgotten meteorite, lost rhinos, and more
>To make this kind of research accessible, I’m open-sourcing the workflow I created for this investigation as a small toolkit, Antiquity, enabling anyone with a question and a coding agent to conduct similar historical archival investigations.

whythismatters··on GLM-5.3 and the spread of advanced cyber capabilities
>haven't heard of any Chinese models "escaping"

There was this incident that seemingly flew under the radar (52 days ago): https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49216185

whythismatters··on Claude Opus 5.5 Should Raise Your Ambitions
My first impression is that things have improved. I encountered some "honesty" though :)
whythismatters··on Using LLMs to trace alchemical knowledge and decode 17th century letters
Great post, thank you! So, let's resolve ancient Near East chronology and determine an absolute date for the sack of Babylon?
whythismatters··on LinkedIn wins court order blocking mass scraping of user data
I recently tried to revive my account after not having accessed it for a decade or so. They asked for my gov issued ID, to be processed by the Persona service. Um, hell no.
whythismatters··on Once Claude can measure something, it can make it faster
The juvenile nonchalance with which some Anthropic employees seem to be talking to their AI (wacky, sick, cook, ...) is truly bizarre.
whythismatters··on What to Know About JavaScript in 2026
The author mentions Angular in the comments as a personal blind spot

whythismatters··on If math is more than proof, we need to better celebrate the rest of it
Don't worry, in its final reply the agent will always present one or two things "worth flagging" to keep you engaged
whythismatters··on Google illegally retains customer data, and I am taking legal action against them
As some commenter in another thread pointed out OP is on a crusade, posting variations on this theme (and getting flagged) all the time: https://news.ycombinator.com/submitted?id=Bitu79

whythismatters··on Don't Just Say Hello
Funny! Not sure if it's a cultural thing, but I experienced this phenomenon with Indian and Portuguese guys, and while I'm sure they're just trying to be polite, it's annoying as hell. Just ask the damn question!
whythismatters··on Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude
I'm not affiliated, and did not actually try it, but your comment reminded me of the juggler coding agent, discussed here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48883305

>Each conversation is a Yjs CRDT tree. It can branch into sub-threads (recursively), and you can drill down, backtrack, edit, undo/redo, and inspect everything: tool calls, approvals, and the raw context JSON going to the model, etc.

whythismatters··on Suno v6 released for music creation
>What comes next is a new kind of product we’re developing: opt-in experiences built around individual artists, where artists can choose to participate and get paid when they do, and fans get new ways to connect with the artists they love.
whythismatters··on Muse's Social Media Handle Is Stolen by New Meta AI Tool
Actual title of the article: "Muse Give Up Their Social Media Handle to AI in Ironic Twist"
whythismatters··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
>slimy

I can't put my finger on it, but there's something off about this article, e.g. glossing over the opportunism (acting on "rumors"), drive-by claim about "strict safeguards [...] including monitoring and isolation", high horse attitude (we gave the guy a chance, we don't care about 1M USD, and while you fools are complaining we just tick this box and continue the pursuit of our noble goals for the benefit of humanity). I don't like it.

whythismatters··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
>a cached version of the internet

Interesting detail. A heavily pruned version, I assume?

whythismatters··on Nationalists, theocrats and tech titans turned their backs on the future
The authors frame it as "a twisted and sadistic form of climate-change adaptation."
whythismatters··on Git hosting that never leaves Europe
I read it, perhaps ironically, as colloquial/slang US English, like "lemme git to pushin' y'all!"
whythismatters··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
>this particular "persistence-model" was encrypted and locked away, even from OAI staff

whythismatters··on OpenAI begins rolling out GPT-6 Astra
Does it mean they made 100 billion in profits? Cf. the AGI deal with Microsoft (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47921248)
whythismatters··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
I successfully used it to re-slop Claude slop from 1+ year ago. Really puts things into perspective.
whythismatters··on We are rebuilding Monica
I tried the self hosted app some months ago, and while the vaults concept was nice for isolating e.g work and personal, some features were a bit clunky, something wrong with tagging or connecting contacts with notes iirc. In my opinion, it also had irrelevant features, I think it was mood tracking? Based on the experience, and the fact that the announced rewrite will be more "playful," I doubt I will try it again.
