whywhywhydude··on Ted Weschler Turned $70k into $264M in a Retirement Account
How does this discount efficient market hypothesis? You can find plenty of examples of people buying 2$ lottery tickets and becoming millionaires.
whywhywhydude··on Meta Reports First Quarter 2024 Results
Because it’s one of the biggest tech companies and its results foreshadow earnings for other tech companies. Just look at the after hours price movements of most of the tech stocks.
whywhywhydude··on Java: New Draft JEP: “Computed Constants”
Perhaps you are using the wrong language. You should probably just stick with python or javascript where they just have simple lists and maps and pretty much nothing else.
whywhywhydude··on What's up, Python? The GIL removed, a new compiler, optparse deprecated
Unfortunately, python garbage collector messes up copy on write. Here’s a blog from instagram on how they fixed it - https://instagram-engineering.com/copy-on-write-friendly-pyt...
whywhywhydude··on What's up, Python? The GIL removed, a new compiler, optparse deprecated
If you have a non trivial application, multiprocessing just takes a lot of memory. Every child process that you create duplicates the parent memory. There are some interesting hacks like gc.freeze that exploits the copy on write feature of forks to reduce memory, but ultimately you can just create a few hundred of processes compared to thousands of threads because of memory consumption.
whywhywhydude··on Ask HN: Glassdoor is unbelievably bad, why no one disrupting it?
Blind is even worse than Glassdoor. Last I checked, it had some kind of weird restriction about if you are not in a big tech or a well known startup, you can’t see any reviews.
whywhywhydude··on [dead]
I know there are already guns that have fingerprint unlock feature. I wonder if the US constitution allows states to require such fingerprint unlock on all new guns.
whywhywhydude··on Bill C-18: Google to remove news links in Canada over online news law
It’s certainly possible. Wikipedia is free. It won’t be too hard to replicate wikipedia’s model to create a Reddit replica.
whywhywhydude··on Bill C-18: Google to remove news links in Canada over online news law
Going a step further, I think google should stop crawling websites that are paywalled. When I search for something, I want to see results that I can click on. Not some snippets from NYT, WSJ, Bloomberg and others which are heavily paywalled.
whywhywhydude··on Canada plans brain drain of H-1B visa holders, with no-job, no-worries permits
I wonder why Canadians always look at housing from the demand perspective. What about supply? Canada is big. Unless everyone is trying to live in Vancouver and Toronto, there is more than enough space to build houses. Do you not have enough construction workers to build houses?
whywhywhydude··on Oregon finally legalizes pumping your own gas
If you have travelled through the NJ portion of I-95, and stopped at any service stations, you quickly realize how stupid this law is. A single attendant trying to fill gas for 10 cars. Drivers just waiting in line for 20 minutes to fill their gas!
whywhywhydude··on The Shitty Stack System
MSFT stock stagnated for more than a decade and jumped once they fired Ballmer and got rid of his stack ranking system. https://www.macrotrends.net/stocks/charts/MSFT/microsoft/sto...
whywhywhydude··on Amazon duped millions of consumers into enrolling in Prime, US FTC says
Isn’t customer obsession Amazon’s first leadership principal? I wonder how they justified such dark patterns?
whywhywhydude··on NYC food delivery gig workers score a big minimum wage victory
If this massively increases the cost of online deliveries, won’t it reduce demand significantly? Unless they limit or freeze who can do online deliveries (like they do for uber and lyft), I am not sure if the workers will really be better off.
whywhywhydude··on Deepmind Alphadev: Faster sorting algorithms discovered using deep RL
It is astounding how something as well as studied as sorting still has opportunities for further improvements!
whywhywhydude··on High prices make textbook ‘piracy’ acceptable to most students
Won’t things like blanket student loan forgiveness or very cheap student loans make such moral hazards even worse? Publishers, college administrators, football coaches, etc. will try to extract as much as possible from the free student loans provided by the government.
whywhywhydude··on The death of self-driving cars is greatly exaggerated
Tesla’s insistence on using vision alone is pretty dumb. Elon and Andrej Karpathy argued that since humans can drive using just vision, that’s how we should do it in self driving cars, but I think that’s a flawed argument. The proper question to ask would be - if given additional senses, wouldn’t humans use them for safer driving?
whywhywhydude··on Stop eliminating good candidates by asking them the wrong questions
Writing correct distributed CRUD is hard. I have interviewed quite a few people who didn’t have a clue about how to insert into a table without creating data races.
whywhywhydude··on Why labor shortages could be here to stay
That’s assuming that companies have high margins and just have wads of cash to throw at employees. That’s probably not true for majority of the small companies - startups, restaurants and small moms and pops shops.
whywhywhydude··on Sam Altman Says OpenAI Will Leave the EU If There's Any Real AI Regulation
I can see them mandating another GDPR like popup saying that the content is AI created. Europeans have the right to know if they are being bamboozled by AI created content.
whywhywhydude··on Across America, some places still outlaw living with people who aren’t relatives
Weren’t those laws made and selectively enforced to prevent immigrants and black people from being able to afford a house? The racist past still haunting American towns.
whywhywhydude··on Cops say they're being poisoned by fentanyl. Experts disagree
The difference here is Russia deliberately converted it into a aerosol form that can be absorbed by the lungs. It’s not the same as carfentanil dust (or vapor) as a result of bad storage.
whywhywhydude··on Google DeepMind
Exciting time for AI. A little competition from OpenAI is finally forcing google AI researchers to actually focus on real world applications instead of just publishing papers and patting themselves on the back.
whywhywhydude··on Mastodon hit 10M users
I wish they changed the name to something better. Would probably increase adoption greatly if they can come up with a name that doesn’t sound like a porn site specializing in bondage.
whywhywhydude··on New York City Prices Make $100k Salary Feel Like $36,000
It increases efficacy, but most of the efficiency gains probably goes to the landlords, property owners and a few lucky percentage who win the subsidized housing lotteries.
whywhywhydude··on GPT-4
Looks like the only way to identify a genius human vs GPT-4 is to use leetcode hard problems.
whywhywhydude··on $22B project to provide 8% of UK energy via undersea cable from North Africa
It’s insane how these articles somehow conjure up some kind of nonsensical bad for environment arguments. Putting solar panels in the desert is good for the environment. It reduces the ground temperatures and lets more plants and animals survive. It might also slow down further desertification.
whywhywhydude··on Europe's big tech bill is coming to fruition
Europe’s modus operandi when it comes to tech- we can’t innovate, lets regulate and extract a few billion here and there.
whywhywhydude··on Python’s Multiprocessing Performance Problem
Why would you use a niche programming that you can’t find any developers for? I would just use Go.
whywhywhydude··on Python’s Multiprocessing Performance Problem
Unless you are doing Machine learning or using numpy, I do not recommend anyone use python for anything performance sensitive. The problem is not just GIL. Because multithreading is not so common in python, it’s really hard to know if some external library is threadsafe. Python also supports async but a lot of libraries do not have asyncio compatibility, so you need to mix threads with asyncio which leads to a big mess.
