wildpeaks··on I wish tech companies knew more about me
I loathe online ads in general because they're the bottom of the barrel, designed to be inconvenient.

But I enjoy creative ads thanks to growing up watching the french tv show Culture Pub: https://www.culturepub.fr/annee-chapitre/2007/

For example, insight into the french advertisement culture makes you appreciate the full depth of the movie "99 francs": https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0875113/

wildpeaks··on StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month
One problem is the gamification rewarded some bad behaviors, especially once one accrues enough points to get away with it.

I know exactly when I permanently stopped contributing to the site: it had been a few years since I happen to have something worth posting a question about, but for once I had a niche question about a popular-enough framework it was worth a shot.

A guy replied with a generic wall of text that had nothing to do with what I had asked, merely contained some of the keywords I also used.

When I politely pointed out it's not what I asked and reformulated in case he merely misunderstood, he got mad that I had refused to just give him the points.

He got extra mad when I figured out the answer on my own and posted it as answer in case others stumbled on the same issue, so he tried to edit my answer to make it look irrelevant.

Unfortunately for him, he didn't realize I also have enough points to edit it back, so he gave up and deleted all his comments to make it look like I'm talking to nobody, then went to downvote a bunch of my older posts.

And the sad part is that guy initially seemed well regarded in our small community, kinda killed my motivation to contribute to the site again after that. Plus I usually always find answers on my own, and anything I can't figure out on my own is so niche it would be pointless to ask.

wildpeaks··on Claude Duet
I suspect it's because they have no incentive to fix it, people will spend tokens searching using Claude rather than doing it themselves for free.
wildpeaks··on Major ICQ security hole (1998)
I often half-joke that my ICQ number is the last thing I'll forget if I get Alzheimer, long after my own name.
wildpeaks··on Attention is all you have
Same reason an ATM gives you the card back before the money because too many people would forget to cleanup (picking up the card) once they reach their objective (getting money).
wildpeaks··on Progressive Web Components
My only issue with Web Components is that, by design, they need to be registered with a globally unique tagname and can't be unregistered.

It's a reasonable compromise given the original purpose of custom elements, but in practice it ends up more maintainable to be inspired by its structures without using real custom elements despite I was initially excited that jsdom supports custom elements nowadays.

wildpeaks··on Blender 5.2 LTS
I wish Autodesk had a Creative Cloud equivalent: imagine a 50€ / month subscription that gives access to all Autodesk apps, it would have sold like hotcakes.

By remaining expensive proprietary tools, they lost the new generations of developers who learned 3D with Blender and Houdini Apprentice and who will naturally continue to use them once they become professionals, so the customer base will keep shrinking.

wildpeaks··on Show HN: Continue? Y/N: A 60-second game about AI agent permission fatigue
This is why having a human in the loop isn't enough because they will cut corners and skip reviewing what they should review.
wildpeaks··on Filing the corners off my MacBooks
I can imagine the resulting texture feeling better on the skin, but I can't unsee the lack of symmetry.
wildpeaks··on Am I German or Autistic?
I lived in Germany for 10+ years, so unsurprisingly got Both (40/62) as result, although it was slightly frustrating sometimes to pick between answers where none really fit precisely (which in itself is probably a sign too, lol)
wildpeaks··on OkCupid gave 3M dating-app photos to facial recognition firm, FTC says
One issue is other people might still upload information about you, so you'd have to limit your irl interactions as well
wildpeaks··on People inside Microsoft are fighting to drop mandatory Microsoft Account
The lack of local account makes it so difficult to setup a PC for someone else, I wish they just used the same strategy as macOS.
wildpeaks··on RAM kits are now sold with one fake RAM stick alongside a real one
It's not a new thing, it's a common way to fill empty slots for aesthetic purposes, especially with RGB builds in aquarium cases.
wildpeaks··on Vite 8.0 Is Out
It depends on the runtime: Node can run Typescript because it automatically strips types (which is so convenient during development).

But in browser, for now only the more limited JSDoc-style types can be shipped as-is indeed.

wildpeaks··on Vite 8.0 Is Out
Because it's a waste of bandwidth if they're not enforced at runtime, the same reason why minification exists.
wildpeaks··on Void, the Vite-native deployment platform
Evan You just announced it: https://x.com/youyuxi/status/2032385324572180575
wildpeaks··on Ask HN: How to go back to listening to MP3s?
I never stopped, Bandcamp sells DRM-free files (especially on "Bandcamp Fridays" once a month when more of the money goes to the artist, unlike Spotify and other streaming services), and VLC works on both desktop and mobile.

wildpeaks··on You can make up HTML tags
Custom elements are web components, it's literally what the article is about
wildpeaks··on You can make up HTML tags
Exactly why I banned React from my pipelines years ago, native Web Components + dispatchEvent gives you the modern web without bloat and churn, and Vite for a lightweight HMR thanks to native ES Modules.

Server-side you can use jsdom to polyfill document, it supports Web Components too.

wildpeaks··on Tell HN: Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas !

May your glühwein be hot and your cats purring :)

wildpeaks··on Show HN: HN Wrapped 2025 - an LLM reviews your year on HN
lol it claims I'm fiercely anti-Creative Cloud whereas I'm actually one of their oldest subscribers (literally signed up the day it was announced)
wildpeaks··on Apple has locked my Apple ID, and I have no recourse. A plea for help
Cryptic hints only work while your memories remain intact, unexpected health issues can render them useless
wildpeaks··on AI Is Breaking the Moral Foundation of Modern Society
Power reveals rather than corrupt: it's easy to act moral when there are consequences (real or imagined) when you don't, but you see someone's true self when they know they could get away with it.

For example, this is why the way someone treats service workers is a good indicator of someone's character.

wildpeaks··on Tell HN: Happy Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving !

I haven't been participating as much lately because life got in the way but I'm still thankful this community exists, it remains one of the very few places I can have high level discussions with fellow inquiring minds.

Wow, 13 years already :)

wildpeaks··on Empathy for Dummies
The title is just a reference to the popular collection of books "XYZ for Dummies", it became a meme in the 1990s-2000s: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_Dummies

You probably even saw some of them around, they have a very distinctive yellow cover.

wildpeaks··on Where it's at://
It's not just who you follow, it feels like the way people post changed as well: I follow mostly the same people as I did on twitter but most act different now, more hot takes and opinions, less signal. To be honest I'm not fond of the popularity contest vibe, but that's irrelevant to the protocol itself.
wildpeaks··on Not only am I losing my livelihood to AI – now it's stealing my em dashes too
Even using "big words" gets you mistaken for AI these days, which is especially frustrating when you have a richer vocabulary than average due to growing up reading a lot of books.
wildpeaks··on Lit: a library for building fast, lightweight web components
You can also use Web Components directly and manipulate them like regular HTML elements, no need to add a framework. Even using Shadow DOM isn't required.

Typescript can even add Intellisense to "customElements.get" by augmenting CustomElementRegistry: https://gist.github.com/cecilemuller/72fbb3bc3a77d82c8a969cd...

wildpeaks··on Aspects of modern HTML/CSS you may not be familiar with
Some people don't realize how far we've come in 20 years, CSS is so good now I even got rid of the last bit of preprocessing I was still using (CSS Modules, for generating globally-unique classnames at build time) now that I switched to Web Components for both frontend and backend (thanks to JSDOM) given they use already globally-unique tag names.
wildpeaks··on WiFi-3D-Fusion – Real-time 3D motion sensing with Wi-Fi
There is even a "License: Not identifiable by Github" badge despite there is a LICENSE file clearly visible in the list of files.

Although I'm more surprised a repo that appears to be merely a week old already has 245 stars.
