wink··on Tailscale SSH: Investigation and remediation update
My sample size is small but nearly everyone I talked to uses basically zero of the tailscale advanced features. The VPN, the tunneling, and the internal IP/DNS - nothing else. And the same is true for headscale and netbird.
wink··on UK to charge universities $1,200 per international student
I don't want to absolve Kohl here but personally this sounds like it at most had paved the way. I only started university in 2003, without any fees, and then they were introduced (so 4-5 years after the Kohl era), and then scrapped again as well.
wink··on Security advisory: Critical remote code execution vulnerabilities, update now
https://hub.docker.com/_/php are the "official docker" php images not the "official php" docker images, which afaik do not exist.
wink··on Security advisory: Critical remote code execution vulnerabilities, update now
So what you're saying that it's only the 90% of lines of code that have been touched in the last 18 years. Yeah.
wink··on Drupal is now light-years ahead of its reputation
You would probably never see anyone in a (community) leadership role say "we're worse than our reputation", the most humble you'd get is "we match our reputation" (if it's good, not bad) but "we're better than everyone says" just feels wrong to me.
wink··on Drupal is now light-years ahead of its reputation
I don't have a strong opinion on Drupal (last used it 15? years ago, it was fine) but the people who make don't get to say "Drupal is now light-years ahead of its reputation.". That's what everyone says of their own stuff, just no.
wink··on I Became a Citizen of Japan
I'm not sure if this is different depending on where you come from and where you emigrated to, but as a EU citizen this just doesn't click with me, at all.

We can freely move, work, marry, create companies, and everything else here already, I don't even think I'd think about it very often if I had a different passport (and it's not a thing I've only thought about for the last five minutes). (Of course this isn't true for all of them, but some of the neigboring countries).

wink··on William Gibson and the trademarking of cyberspace
The amount of people in my life who use Meta for the company and not still Facebook is probably exactly zero. I'm not talking about articles or meta-(haha) discussion about Meta or HN, though.
wink··on More on Anthropic's Scion ripping off Mononoke
You ask that like it's not the absolute norm :P
wink··on Passkeys are not a trap
The thing the people are also sometimes missing is that I leave my YubiKey at home... especially in those situatiosn where I am prone to lose it.

Going to a concert - I'll take my phone but not my YubiKey, etc.pp

And if I enroll 2 YubiKeys, I can deposit one safely at home. I want my phone to be less important, not more important.

wink··on Show HN: I wrote an email app that accepts only one sender per inbox
I just don't understand it.

How am I merging the inboxes again? Maybe 20 years of using an elaborate system of folders and inbox rules has warped my mind, but I don't want to have 20 inboxes if I get regular mail from 20 companies.

Or does it all forward it to Gmail (which I don't use) after it's "ok"?

wink··on A new model for open source: closed to pull requests, open to remix
On a large scale this sounds like a nightmare.

Upstreaming fixes has always been awesome so you don't need to care for your special snowflake fork, and it just took time, and effort, and so on.

Sure, people who are all in on AI will say "no worries, we will just somehow get all the security fixes from upstream by letting the agent cherry-pick stuff" and I'll just wish them good luck.

Me? Every time I can sunset a personal project of mine and replace it with a tool with a (even tiny) community and trying to improve that over doing everything from scratch, I'm very happy. (The opposite has happened as well, of course, but rarer). Maybe this is different for people who like to create new stuff, build communities, amass fame. I'm the rando who just shows up and collaborates with you for a few days/weeks/years and vanishes again.

wink··on The Dock on Mac, from OS 10 to macOS 27
Interesting. I've only been a (work) mac user for 2 years now and I don't really have anything against it, as long as I can move it to the side (looking at you, Windows 11) - I am not even hiding it.

I mean, sure, it's not i3 and I can't fully work without using a mouse, but alt-tab, and cmd-space and the occasional click work for me. Work as in: as a user with opinions on most software I am just now actively wondering why I never had problem with it :P

wink··on Ask HN: Do you want a router that has DD-WRT pre-installed?
If you had asked me 10 or 15 years ago, yes. At some point I decided I am happy enough with a FritzBox (maybe also because of the included modem, so less devices) for home use - and then added 2 of the cheaper mikrotik devices.

I think there is a market, but it's small. I would absolutely not replace my setup now after spending some money just this year. Had this offer existed last year, maybe (but I have also thought about a Turris Omnia in the past...)

Disclaimer: I have used DD-WRT, OpenWRT, Tomato and for the sake of this argument, they're interchangeable to me. Something FLOSS that I can configure, but I've not even checked what the market provides for many years.

wink··on So long Google, and thanks for all the nudes
I've heard just as many horror stories for the Apple app store. I don't think there is real improvement or downfall for either. You are lucky, or you are unlucky, and the two app stores trade places for your own problems every couple of months (or years).
wink··on Maybe don't let Muse run your Facebook Marketplace account
Not sure how many weeks? or months? since I last visited it, but Firefox with UBO just displayed this perfectly. A low bar, I know.
wink··on VSCode's SSH Agent Is Bananas (2025)
It's buried so deep between "ah yes, of course you know that if you ever used the feature" that I bet the majority of readers might have missed it (me too).
wink··on ArXiv receives multiyear commitments to support it as an independent nonprofit
Coincidentally I read this not too long ago: https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2026/09/how-to-get-a-doi-for-your-b...
wink··on Security headers on 4,688 small-business websites: 49.7% met none of 7 criteria
for static sites... it's not that I would call them useless, but most are just not very critical. Clickjacking and any cookie attacks on a site without cookies is pretty useless most of the time.
wink··on Minimal Phone 2
I think if you ask 5 people what dumb (enough) phone meant you'd get seven answers.

For some anything after SMS is not dumb enough (ok, this still exists), others would be ok with just a browser, and you said Maps and WA/etc/.

I am not even sure I could give you a good enough definition, I'm kinda happy enough with Android and just ignore any dumb/minimal angle, because if I only take a phone with me I generally want to potentially use it as a computer replacement. There are really only 2 people I call regularly.

wink··on macOS 27 Golden Gate – Review
I've had this (first) work mac for 2 years and the upside is that every new version is usually only slightly worse than a new Windows version, which is generally a big step down.

For Linux I've been kinda indifferent for 15 years. Maybe it's me.

wink··on Java 27
One of the releases was that, though - either 9 or 11, with the package reorgs that broke everything. OK... it wasn't fast.

But Java 8 was stable (as in APIs, not judging its quality here) and since then it's gotten good again.

wink··on Alternatives to MinIO for single-node local S3
Because this is about having a local standin for S3, which (in a production deploy) often solves a different problem than a (local) filesystem.

This post does not even mention the S3 API as a replacement for a filesystem.

wink··on Microsoft patches Windows and Excel – breaks audio, remote access, and paste
Just not being able to use one application is better than your whole OS going up in smoke every couple weeks. Yes, Windows 95A on the wrong hardware (and how would you know?) did that.
wink··on Lotus Notes and the dangers of starting from scratch
Apparently it was just so big and featureful that no 2 people can agree on their experience.

I only used it for half a year in 2003, didn't have anything to do with administration.

I could receive and send emails, and I think newsgroups (or was that not directly included?), I had not self-hosted email at that point, but of course used it for a couple years. It was better than Outlook at a job I had before that, otherwise I'm really indifferent.

wink··on Why I'm Not Excited About the Graphene OS and Motorola Partnership
Call me petty, but I bought a new motorola x4 about 2.5y after it came out (via gsmarena) and it never got a security or OS update, the date is still before my time of purchase. The hardware still works perfectly fine, I use it as a small tablet around the house but I've long stopped using any kind of account on it that I care about.

I will never buy a motorola phone again and I'll gladly tell everyone to avoid them.

wink··on Show HN: HomeCat – Design your backyard office
I mean the page is in English and they used $ for the currency, how many countries could they really target? /s
wink··on There's a new "Google Jail" for independent wikis
Things change. I'd been involved with some game wikis long enough ago that moving there was a good idea (if you had no one who wanted to do server admin and no hw/vps sponsors)
wink··on Site Is Closed on Sundays
I'm not sure it's really snarky. In large parts of Germany stores have been closed on Sundays for most of my life (and where I live also after 20:00) and yes, going into town or to IKEA on a Saturday is actually a meme sometimes.

Both things can be true - I can be indifferent or appreciative of stuff being closed on Sundays and I can also be annoyed that 90% of the people have their only free day on the same day and thus bigger shopping needs to happen there instead of being spread over two days, unless you take days off.

wink··on Will you have spent more of your life with computers than your family?
I have a lot more computers than family members, so that's only fair I guess?
