winrid··on Azure's Weakest Link – Five Full Cross-Tenant Compromises
Good time to start.
winrid··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
Yeah a good portion of the population is PWM sensitive and OLED displays hurt their eyes. Macs are a bit better with the like 10khz modulation, but after a few days they still make my eyes feel like they're burning :/
winrid··on AI isn't replacing SREs, it's deskilling them
The best is when it's just two devs blindly sharing output from Claude back and forth during a major outage instead of USING THEIR BRAINS
winrid··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
I love my touchscreen thinkpad. For some things it's faster than the mouse. Scrolling is also nicer.
winrid··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
Will be fun to see how bad the PWM is on this display.

Haven't been able to use any newer macs :/

winrid··on Four Months of Zig
What do you mean wrong allocator? What if you want to use a different one (will it work?)
winrid··on Four Months of Zig
That's because in Zig that would be seen as a surprise side effect - the allocator is expected when the action is performed, not when it's "prepared", this way you know append() allocates. Otherwise it wouldn't be explicit which Array methods allocated.

The Odin way is useful, too. Depends on what you're building.

winrid··on WorldTUI: I trained a 360M model to pretend to be a terminal
I'm aware. I've vibe coded some of the electron based tools I used into C++ apps, GB of memory to 50mb...

winrid··on FreeDNS
This! I was using this in like middle school in 2006 or so to run my sites. Cool to see it still works.
winrid··on WorldTUI: I trained a 360M model to pretend to be a terminal
even my ten year old laptop browses the web fine ^_^

If I had to complain about any site/app it'd be datadog... each tab uses like 1gb in firefox.

winrid··on Redesigning source control at Anthropic
I have to admit, I don't recall this issue in any of Google's products. So they at least do that right.
winrid··on Redesigning source control at Anthropic
That's the perfect amount of layout shifts.

Lol I have the same thoughts for ChatGPT. How much code are they writing, but the main chat UI moves around like 3 times during load so you constantly click the wrong buttons. How does this not infuriate anyone that works there? I've actually switched to claude's mobile site for more queries now.
winrid··on WSL3 Performance is about 5-60% faster than WSL2 depending on the workload
Not sure if related but you can adjust how WSL releases virtual memory back to windows which will lower your memory usage
winrid··on How Fast is Python 3.15?
not everyone is writing simple web servers :) and if you are, then the rust is easy to read as it's simple. I also use django in some large projects, and don't see a future of my use of django really anymore. If I'm not feeling like rust is a great fit, I usually reach for Java with javalin.
winrid··on How Fast is Python 3.15?
Rust is nice to read because you can see from a function signature what it mutates

If you write slow rust, it's very easy to read, and still plenty fast.

winrid··on Pop!_OS bans AI-generated code from much of its codebase
Some projects exist just for our enjoyment of coding, so yeah I read the code on those.
winrid··on Amazon introduces a redesigned Kindle family
I didn't either until I used all Samsung displays for a couple years and now I can't look at any of them for more than like 5mins without eye pain. I can only use IPS displays now. But it could be some kind of genetic issue or something.
winrid··on What is going on with ceiling fans
My biggest issue is that a lot of them have cheap power supplies with terrible PWM, so they hurt my eyes. So my nightmare is basically finding a nice place to rent and realizing they put all these cheap fixtures in and then I can't spend more than like an hour in the house without feeling like someone is stabbing my retinas.
winrid··on Amazon introduces a redesigned Kindle family
Note that that Samsung display backlight modulation is pretty hard on your eyes
winrid··on The Forgetful CPU (Linux on M4)
The 2020 era i9s were BAD even in macs. The modern Intel cpus run pretty cool depending on what you get.
winrid··on Pop!_OS bans AI-generated code from much of its codebase
I wonder if the issue is mostly the code or the AI written PRs and people using AI to talk to the maintainers. I personally just ban anyone doing the latter, I don't want to talk to opus more than I already do lol

winrid··on RSS Feeds for Last.fm
I'm not the one nit picking

Last.fm is an old php app

It's a joke

Go touch grass

winrid··on RSS Feeds for Last.fm
It's mostly a legacy untyped backend thing.

average legacy PHP backend :)

winrid··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free
They protect them because they are them. The line between corporations and government is pretty thin these days IMO.
