wittycardio··on The emotional toll of caring for research animals
Yes.
wittycardio··on AI Becomes Silicon Valley’s Next Buzzy Bandwagon as Crypto Boom Fizzles
I think AI will be underwhelming but will have real applications. Crypto has always been a pure pyramid scheme
wittycardio··on Montrealer found guilty of hate against Jews after Daily Stormer post
People are very susceptible to ideas. That's the premise of political propaganda and the entire advertising industry. It's not clear what the solution is but most people are consumers of ideas, not producers.
wittycardio··on Solar panels reduced my electric bill in 2022
You are incredibly ignorant about how the world works.
wittycardio··on Ask HN: Hiring managers for SWEs, how is the market changing for open positions?
The data of their acceptance into faang. It sets a minimum bar of effort and knowledge
wittycardio··on Cops Cast Doubt on Musk’s Claim That ‘Crazy Stalker’ Followed His Son
Elon simps are slow they don't really understand conditional logic.
wittycardio··on Ask HN: Given AI advancements, is a master’s degree in CS worthless?
US universities don't really have research focused masters so they are shitty cash cow degrees. I think a research master's from a good European university can teach you a lot and make you a better programmer. It's kind of like doing a few years of a PhD and dropping out in the states.
wittycardio··on Ask HN: Hiring managers for SWEs, how is the market changing for open positions?
Not even close to true. I've received about 20 recruiter messages this week and most of my colleagues have had the same experience
wittycardio··on Server stats say movetodon.org reached a new record of 49k users yesterday
The blue checks were given to public figures and serve a very valuable purpose. I'm not sure why people are so mad at the "blue checks".
wittycardio··on Ask HN: Hiring managers for SWEs, how is the market changing for open positions?
The majority of good software engineers don't work for faang but the majority of faang engineers are good
wittycardio··on Argentina Wins the World Cup
Most exciting player I've ever seen on a football pitch. Messi is better but for pure entertainment value no one beats mbappe right now
wittycardio··on Twitter applies 7-day suspension to half a dozen journalists
Yup I don't like Elon but I assumed twitter would mostly stay the same with a bit more trumpism. I was fine with that but after the sheer stupidity of the last few weeks I'm going to have to leave.
wittycardio··on Deepmind’s AlphaCode conquers coding, performing as well as humans
Yup our current version of AI is great for cool demos and very bad for real world use cases.
wittycardio··on Deepmind’s AlphaCode conquers coding, performing as well as humans
Why would they when you could just google the answers to these questions the whole time. The point is to see if the candidate understands algorithms not to solve a novel problem.
wittycardio··on SBF Arrested by Bahamian Authorities
You seem to have some serious mental issues. I recommend therapy.
wittycardio··on SBF Arrested by Bahamian Authorities
There isn't. Loony conspiracies need to be banned here.
wittycardio··on The fact that Twitter is running well with headcount down significantly matters
It's not running well. Far more glitchy than it used to be. You couldn't reply on iPhones a few days ago. I constantly get page load failures on web. It has a decade+ of engineering work on it so I don't expect it to just collapse. But definitely seeing issues
wittycardio··on Faculty member issues dire warning to grad students about jobs
Don't think it's easy but yeah those are the kinds of places that would pay 200k in the US
wittycardio··on Faculty member issues dire warning to grad students about jobs
Doing machine learning or data science
wittycardio··on Faculty member issues dire warning to grad students about jobs
In the US, though I imagine DeepMind and FAIR pay a lot more than 37k pounds in the UK too
wittycardio··on Faculty member issues dire warning to grad students about jobs
An AI PhD from a reasonable university will easily make 200k + at SV companies
wittycardio··on Faculty member issues dire warning to grad students about jobs
I think it's more likely because PhDs in AI/Ml are extremely expensive to hire. A PhD in AI generally does more than string together pytorch and tensorflow.
wittycardio··on Automation enables founders to grow companies with fewer and fewer employees
There is both an individual contribution and a societal contribution. No one is denying the individual contribution. But none of YC types had anything to do with inventing the internet but feel like they are the only ones who deserve it's rewards. They haven't created anything like information theory. It's mostly been about fleecing retail investors. More SBF and less Shannon
wittycardio··on Automation enables founders to grow companies with fewer and fewer employees
Claude Shannon was able to do what he was able to do because of the ample research funding and the academic environment. I have great respect for people like Claude Shannon but they require an ecosystem to be able to do their work.
wittycardio··on Automation enables founders to grow companies with fewer and fewer employees
Who's saying anything needs to be banned. We're talking about who can reasonably claim to be contributing to the progress of society. Go ahead and smell the farts my friend
wittycardio··on Automation enables founders to grow companies with fewer and fewer employees
No not all work is equal. Progress is a rare thing. Do not equate all forms of work to progress. People will pay good money for women to fart on their faces. That's not valuable work. Neither is building shitty apps.
wittycardio··on Automation enables founders to grow companies with fewer and fewer employees
Sure progress comes from scientists , not from idiots building b2b saas apps.
wittycardio··on Automation enables founders to grow companies with fewer and fewer employees
Most progress has come from universities, defense and government funding. These losers build an app and proclaim themselves gurus on the future. It's insane that people fall for it.
wittycardio··on Automation enables founders to grow companies with fewer and fewer employees
Most Founders are interchangeable. The entire business of YC is paying for a ton of people to found a ton of companies and hoping one hits. Luck is a huge factor. The issue is the 1 guy that does hit has an outsize impact on society. Sometimes it's positive but often it's not.
wittycardio··on Automation enables founders to grow companies with fewer and fewer employees
Pretty clear that these are people who want to fuck you over. Silicon Valley elites have accumulated enough power to come mask off. Entitled dirtbags who profited off government funded science and technology who've never created an ounce of value in their lives.
