woadwarrior01··on Survival LLM: AI assistant and emergency library that runs on your own computer
The irony is thick. The dev is paying Anthropic $200 a month, but $100 a year for code-signing is extortion.
woadwarrior01··on Survival LLM: AI assistant and emergency library that runs on your own computer
Code signing and sandboxing exists for a very good reasons (security and privacy) and it's easy enough to ship a sandboxed app.
woadwarrior01··on JetBrains Thinkrail
The README has plenty of Claude-isms too.
woadwarrior01··on Meta Ignores Brazilian Court Order to End Bolsonaro Favoritism
I think the most charitable explanation for this is that it's because polarizing content (aka ragebait) gets views/plays, which the ranking algorithms directly optimize for.

Also, this isn't a new phenomenon. If you're interested, I'd recommend reading Shoshana Zuboff's 2018 book: The Age of Surveillance Capitalism.

woadwarrior01··on Kimi K3.1 Pro and K3.1 Pro Highspeed
Kimi is the closest Chinese equivalent of Anthropic.
woadwarrior01··on Hacker leaks 281 GB of data from Germany's far-right AfD party
The hackers must be German (Datenschutz). :)

I think they could've redacted using a small model like OpenAI's privacy-filter model instead of rewriting.

woadwarrior01··on eMudhra intermediate CA compromise
I hadn't heard of the CA before and had to look it up. They're a publicly listed company in India. Markets will price this in.

woadwarrior01··on Publish fake stats, get cited in LLMs
People have been astroturfing sites like Wikipedia, Reddit etc, well before LLMs were a thing.
woadwarrior01··on Publish fake stats, get cited in LLMs
> As a human, this is fantastic.

s/human/unscrupulous marketer/

Bad for humans in general, good for hucksters and con artists. Net negative for humanity.

woadwarrior01··on Publish fake stats, get cited in LLMs
IMO, it's similar to what's happening with code. People have been shipping sloppy code and fake news forever. It's just that the cost of doing these things has fallen off a cliff.
woadwarrior01··on DeepSeek banned from U.S. federal civilian agencies under new DHS order
Lobbying is corruption with a layer of indirection.
woadwarrior01··on Theranos-Style Fraud Has Become the Norm
Did you mean grifts?
woadwarrior01··on Anthropic's proposed AI safety bill only kicks in if 50 deaths or $1B in damages
If a life is only worth $20m, by their own calculus: saving > 50k lives is worth more than Anthropic. Tobacco causes ~8m deaths a year, so banning tobacco (easy intervention) should be worth ~160 Anthropic sized labs. :D
woadwarrior01··on Qwen3.8-27B on the iPhone 18 Neural Engine at 15–70 tok/s (1.5 bpw)
I'm the dev behind the Private LLM app, which was the first on-device LLM app on the App Store. Don't download it yet. I'm currently finalizing a brand new v2 rewrite which can run models that the copycat app (locally) cannot run, like Bonsai 2 27B, Gemma 4 12B etc.

woadwarrior01··on Do dentists know what they're doing?
This! We went to a pediatric dentist with my kid on Monday, with a referral from another dentist, both private. After small talk, their first proper question was: "Do you have insurance?". Before I could respond, my wife responded affirmatively. Insurance here in Ireland means private insurance. After an x-ray, we were presented with a menu of treatment options ranging from around €2k to €5k.

Later I requested the clinic to share the x-ray with me and consulted with another pediatric dentist from another EU country. His assessment was completely different, and recommended very minimal intervention.

woadwarrior01··on Show HN: Indigene – Native plants for where you stand
The intro video looks very well done. How did you go about making it?
woadwarrior01··on We’re releasing Jev 1.14.0 along with experimental features for dreamers
There's nothing wrong with them wanting to capture some economic value, but the way they're monetizing it is a slippery slope of incentives.

OTOH, I trust the benchmarks from Apolinario's HF space that you've linked to.

woadwarrior01··on Has AI tells
Interesting! I tried it with unordered Markdown lists (both nested and single-level) and I couldn't reproduce it. Would you mind sharing a small repro? In some ways I guess the brittleness is to be expected since IIUC, it uses regexes under the hood.
woadwarrior01··on We’re releasing Jev 1.14.0 along with experimental features for dreamers
The way that site charges a fee[1] for benchmarking models, makes any benchmarks on it very sus, IMO. TBF, the benchmarking site is probably more profitable than TypeSafe, just like the joke about how WinRAR is more profitable than OpenAI[2]. :)

woadwarrior01··on How Amazon pushes up prices all across the Internet
That used to be the case until about a year ago, but isn't the case anymore at least here in Ireland. I'm taking them to small claims court because they closed my account without a refund on a legitimate return. Their customer support has gone from excellent to nearly nonexistent. Fortunately for me, I've kept all the receipts.
woadwarrior01··on Hackers activate automatic defrosting in supermarket fridges across Europe
90x SOC2 compliance.

Edit: TBF, they're ISO 27001 certified. Such cybersecurity! :P

woadwarrior01··on Hackers activate automatic defrosting in supermarket fridges across Europe
Evidently, the username was admin and the password was automatically reset to the current date, every day. More of a gross negligence issue than a hack, IMO.

woadwarrior01··on Ledger confirms spy chip implant behind wallet crypto thefts
Ledger has had three data leak incidents: once in 2020, a software supply chain attack in 2023 and another data leak in 2026. This latest one is the fourth.

Even if one were to ignore the latest incident, which arguably isn't their fault, the first three incidents make up a pretty bad security track record.

How a French (EU based) company is still in business after all of this, is an indicator of selective enforcement of EU privacy laws (GDPR, etc).

woadwarrior01··on Typesafe AI raises $870M at $7.5B
I wonder how much of it has been earmarked for astroturfing on HN and X? :D

woadwarrior01··on Strands Decider 2B: a small, open-source, decision model
The ~2-week-old Intern-Decision family of models (0.8B, 2B and 4B) have the same Qwen3.5 base model family (albeit the instruction-tuned variants) and pointer head architecture.
