worble··on Software may be getting worse, but it used to be horrible
For me I think the difference is that software never used to be actually important, it was either games or just otherwise hobby software.

Now when something crashes I actually need it for work, or to bank, or to navigate, or hell sometimes the only menu at a restaurant is a QR code but my damn phone is failing to recognise it again.

When you introduce technology into every facet of life, it's suddenly death by a thousand cuts when things don't work, or are a slow buggy mess.

worble··on Revealing the details of how OpenAI agents hacked Hugging Face
Thank you, I've been thinking this for a while now but haven't had the words for it. Whenever I read an LLMs output or thinking process, I don't feel like we've created intelligent systems, just coked up monkeys with 60 arms typing at once. That can work fine for a lot of things, but a humanity replacement it is not.
worble··on Windows 11's "special" developer edition looks like another marketing misfire
Meanwhile my steam library of 900+ works pretty much flawlessly on linux. Yes the odd esoteric game needs a workaround or two, but honestly if you browse the pcgamingwiki then you'd notice you also need to tweak them on windows too, such is the problem with older games.
worble··on Incident with Github.com [resolved]
I have little sympathy that they're buckling over a problem they helped create.
worble··on The kids with phones are alright
Thank you, it's been infuriating reading these social media bans for children, as if when kids suddenly turn 16 or 18 or whatever magical nimber the courts come up with, they are suddenly immune to the psychological tricks from multi million dollar companies hiring the best psychologists with no morals money can buy.

Social media needs to be heavily regulated to the point where it's safe for everyone, or banned entirely. I don't understand why there's this belief it should have a right to exist when basically everyone agrees it's a net negative to society.

They very specifically do not accept AI contributions because there is no way to tell if it's just regurgitating parts of the various Windows source code leaks from over the years ad-hoc, which would be a very costly mistake to make if Microsoft were feeling litigious.

The point is that the onus is on you to do it, and if you don't then the consequences are yours to bear. Personal responsibility seems to be in short supply these days.

> It's not like people audit every line of kernel/driver/BIOS/EFI code before running Linux?

That's basically Torvolds full time job?

worble··on Frontier AI has broken the open CTF format
CTF is a game mode for popular online games like halo (or at least, that's how I know it), so paragraphs like

> My first CTF was HCKSYD, a 48-hour solo CTF. I full solved it and won in 2 hours. I was completely hooked. That led me to win DownUnderCTF, Australia's largest CTF, with Blitzkrieg multiple times. Blitzkrieg was one of Australia's strongest teams at the time. I later joined TheHackersCrew, an international top-tier team that was consistently ranked highly on CTFTime, the main global ranking and event calendar the scene uses as its scoreboard. With them, I competed in some of the most prestigious CTFs in the world, consistently placing well within the top 10 until the end of 2025.

Are still completely nonsensical to even those that understand the acronym

worble··on Rewrite Bun in Rust has been merged
Merging a complete rewrite in another language in 9 days seems insane to me. Maybe I'm just too cautious but with something like this I'd split off as a separate binary and get some heavy use customers involved as testers first to see if it causes any unforeseen problems before slowly expanding it out.

I'd want to be pretty damn confident it won't cause any regressions before sunsetting the original codebase in favor of this one.

worble··on Linux gaming is faster because Windows APIs are becoming Linux kernel features
If you want to swap, then just do it right now? As far as gaming is concerned Linux just works, and reaches speeds that are more than good enough to do so, even if they're not exactly the same as windows - the steam deck is pretty much proof of this.

If Linux was measurably 5% slower on all benchmarks, would that mean you wouldn't do it even if you wanted to? Is every single nanosecond of performance really that important to you? I switched 10 years ago when things were a lot rougher than this, and in the end everything still worked well enough that I never cared to swap back.

worble··on Postmortem: TanStack NPM supply-chain compromise
No, its still a very useful mitigation tool.

1) Package owners will often realise they've been hacked quickly, since there are releases they never authorised. This gives them plenty of time to raise the alarm and yank the packages

2. Independent security researchers and other automated vulnerability scans will still be checking the latest releases even if users aren't using them

Yes it's not a perfect defense but it would help a lot.

worble··on Bitwarden CLI compromised in ongoing Checkmarx supply chain campaign
I don't have any points of comparison since I've never used Bitwarden, but it works well enough for my purposes. It'll match the url, offer to autofill (sometimes those multiflow sites like Microsoft will trip it up, but you can always just right click -> enter username/password for a site and that'll work), and it does TOTP filling too.
worble··on Bitwarden CLI compromised in ongoing Checkmarx supply chain campaign
Keepass is just a single file, you can share it between devices however you want (google drive, onedrive, dropbox, nextcloud, syncthing, rsync, ftp, etc); as long as you can read and write to it, it just works. There are keepass clients for just about everything (keepassxc for desktops, keepass2android or keepassdx for android, keepassium for iphone).
worble··on OpenAI's response to the Axios developer tool compromise
> when it doesn't pwn you.

That's a pretty big asterisk though. Taking on a supply chain risk in exchange for reducing developer friction is not worth it in a lot of situations. Every dependency you take increases your risk of getting pwned (especially when it pulls in it's own dependencies), and you seriously need to consider whether it's worth that when you install it.

Don't get me wrong, sometimes it is; I'm certainly not going to create my own web framework from scratch, but a web request helper? Maybe not so much.

worble··on WireGuard makes new Windows release following Microsoft signing resolution
> following all the attention the HN thread from the other day got

That's great for you, and no offense, but what about developers who can't get buzz in a HN thread? Are they just doomed? Why is support only available to those who can raise a ruckus on social media?

worble··on Google details new 24-hour process to sideload unverified Android apps
> It's my understanding that you don't have to keep developer options enabled after you enable the advanced flow. Once you make the change on your device, it's enabled.

Ok, but why is this advertised to applications in the first place? It's quite literally none of their business that developer options are enabled and it's a constant source of pain when some government / banking apps think they're being more "secure" by disallowing this.

The main site https://xmpp.org/software/ lists lots of different options but I have no idea what core/advanced means and comparing all of these would take ages.
