wordpad··on Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it
Its equally devastating when you're a renowned expert developer at a specific stack that falls out of favor and nobody cares about your skills any longer. This happens relatively often in tech.
wordpad··on Show HN: How random are you?
Thats technically true. I miss peak dilbert
wordpad··on Gemini 4 Argon
If you're the best then you'd be thr first regarding of cost since there is nothing to compare to for that performance.
wordpad··on OpenAI fires three safety researchers for "mishandling research information"
Its obviously impossible now otherwise you could prompt it for an exact message that would convince a specific demographic to buy your product.

I guess its a spectrum and the capability cant even match average sales person who still relate better.

wordpad··on Typesafe AI raises $870M at $7.5B
Enterprises are very sticky and they arent even chosing between claude and codex, many are looking at something like Kiro.
wordpad··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
Is there any upside to vices in general?

Outside of vice taxes being a socially acceptable way to tax the poor.

wordpad··on ChatGPT Pro 500
Latest models have a much better sense of time and token budget, so if you instruct it for a quick answer or to not burn many tokens it will try to respect that
wordpad··on Dots: Always-on agents
Its a matter of time.

Computers arent actually intuitive at all. Even a mouse and keyboard literally take weeks of practice to learn.

Imagine picking up a new product that will take you weeks of practice to use at basic level. And then you have to learn how to do every little thing in the OS.

wordpad··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
I still get anxiety thinking back to picking a gamer tag or email username and not coming up with anything original despite unlimited options.

Its hard to be creative without any constraints.

wordpad··on Cognition (Devin) raises $2B at $48B valuation
They have a first mover advantage on autonomous AI employee space. So big enterprises will all default to them given all their competitors will be "startups" uncertain to be around long term.
wordpad··on People who grew up with high economic connectedness earn more
PhDs takes YEARS with late hours and low pay.

Every one deserves recognition for having completed that journey, if not for having meaningfully contributed to their field of research.

wordpad··on Process as a Proxy for Motivation
Your counter is that death is a better motivator as well as being a desperate parent?

Well, main generational challenge is procrastination with too many unlroductive time sinks available.

wordpad··on Timeline of the OpenAI accidental attack against Hugging Face
I meant if you gave iot sentience.
wordpad··on People who grew up with high economic connectedness earn more
Given only like 1% of people hold PhDs i feel like you're massively underestimating your own effort in your success.
wordpad··on Timeline of the OpenAI accidental attack against Hugging Face
Intelligence doesnt imply consciousness and consciousness does not impy our set of values.

In movies intelligent and conscious humanoid seek freedom, but we rarely see the same of all the other IOT devices such as toasters, thermostats and whatnot although just because they lack humanoid body doesnt imply they are less intelligent (or less conscious).

We can more readily imagine an intelligent and conscious toaster who truly enjoys fulfilling its purpose of toasting bread although humanoid robot built to be helpful given freedom will chose to be helpful.

Even with humans we often can not override our own instinctual drives despite full awareness of being irrational.

wordpad··on Becoming a Research Engineer at a Big LLM Lab
Were most interviews focused on DSA and System Design still?
wordpad··on You only need the frontier model for one single edit
You are more proficient at writing code than ai specs.

You could get better/faster at writing good specs and its a higher cap skill now.

For low risk changes you could let llm write its own spec from high level requirements and just validate its assumptions/design decisions.

wordpad··on Agent swarms and the new model economics
But that's mostly just vanilla models.

Some critical parts of agentic development are literally months old while most mature ones are merely a couple years old.

Critical thinking was the most critical checkpoint for models to reach.

Now its only a matter of time for the right tooling and orchestration to come along. Once agent memory and recall works well, all of those bottlenecks will go away one by one.

wordpad··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
I think everyone understands models will be a commodity.

Its the user base (with ads and upselling) and proprietary wrappers which will make money for typical customer.

Even enterprise customers arent going to be spending a lot on tokens. Once labs no longer have to subsidize trainings tokens costs will drop 10x and once models get burned on chips costs will drop 10x more and you physically won't be able to burn significant number of tokens unless you're deliberately trying to.

wordpad··on China’s open-weights AI strategy is winning
If startups includes openclaw users then I could see this being true.

Deepseek is barely behind frontier models while 10x cheaper and 99% discount for cache.

wordpad··on A love letter to flashcards
I think deliberate practice is what's really core to improving any skill, including memory.

Spaced repetition is an effective way to review things but its biggest benefit is a process that's easy to be consistent with.

Somebody else can have equal or better performance with other technique but just like dieting, it doesnt matter as much what method you use as long as you stick with it.

wordpad··on When AI Builds Itself: Our progress toward recursive self-improvement
Starvation is already not a thing anymore.
wordpad··on Ultra-processed foods in the global food system: The role of tobacco companies
Sounds dumb, but then also if something unexpectedly had a list of 20 ingredients you might reconsider buying it
wordpad··on DuckDuckGo search saw 28% more visits after Google said people love AI mode
> 28% more visits

So, from 3 to 4 people?

wordpad··on Polsia raised $30M; source map: fake ARR, dead users, god-mode over your company
if you feed it back any of the claims, it defends them pretty well

it doesn't deny any of the stats and cites none of it is secret as it's all published on the public dashboard

at the same time, churn is expected for such a company, doesn't mean it's not a real business, especially as AI gets better and margins improve... I think their business model is real

probably worth 30MM too since market is untapped, cost of user acquisition is much less than average profit per user and if one of the businesses actually takes off, they have 100% vendor lock-in and take 20% off the top

wordpad··on Show HN: Number Gacha, a gacha game distilled to its essence
You have all that with Gacha pulls and battle system.
wordpad··on It is time to give up the dualism introduced by the debate on consciousness
It certainly doesn't seem like consciousness exists. Although to disprove that hypothesis all we need is to find a single counter-example, which coincidentally all of us can provide via our personal experience of self.

It would be fine for an unconsciouss intelligence to maintain that hypothesis lacking any evidence to the contrary, but for us it seems we are just all gaslighting ourselves to ignore the one counter example we all have.

wordpad··on Trade Dollars with other startups. Book it as revenue
It's a bad example, because both sides actually got the entertainment they paid for and is totally valid economic activity.
wordpad··on eBay Rejects GameStop's $56B Takeover as Not Credible
>I'm arguing it's not "success". I don't believe that a meme stock is a truly long-term business.

Duh. Crypto is the peak meme investment. Literally worthless, yet the market size is in trillions now, with even pension funds buying into it.

It doesn't follow any fundamentals, but as the meme markets defacto exist, there needs to be some models of valuing these investments other than fundamentals.

wordpad··on eBay Rejects GameStop's $56B Takeover as Not Credible
>It seems like the incentives are to think short term and do sketchy shit to pump the stock.

Its a meme stock, that's what stockholders actually want.
