The current corpus of plaintext markup is over 150 GB with average HTML page load time of 81ms. Hosting images is much doable but would explode the storage and moderation requirements for self-hosters so it needs consideration.

There's a 3rd-party Telegram bot that bypass paywalls and returns a Nonograph URL with article contents. It works reasonably well and is quite fast, but it uses workarounds like scraping the homepage thousands of times per day to generate new anti-csrf tokens.

Something like it but first-party and built into the server to avoid trust in Telegram seems like a good start. After that comes archiving the full page, CSS, JS, and all.

It is depressing to see Nonograph long-term project get less interest than skills.md vapor-ware but such is life. <3 from Jiangmen China & Canada

Version 0.5.0 includes a public API (https://nonograph.com/api) which is the basis for programmatic posting. Archiving was promised and is still a major blocker for the 1.0.0 release.

The development has slowed down after we lost $35,000 USD worth of Monero to a divide by zero bug in Cake Wallet. The service is very cheap to host, so it will not affect the various reverse proxies (.ph, .com, .net) and there will be no API rate limits or captchas.

Would you prefer full webpage archiving with images, CSS layout, and more of the traditional archiver style, OR would you prefer a lightweight page with just formatted text and images, such as the ones you see on Nonograph today, with federated attestation that pages haven't been tampered with?

The plan is to include archiving with paywall bypassing in the codebase, and enable it by default on the Docker images. This way when others host public copies of Nonograph, by default they allow others to bypass paywalls with it as well.

writtenone··on Telegram Desktop vulnerability allowed any user's file to be stolen
No it doesn't. Matrix has large groups, but they are limited:

1. You must join a group to see its contents. This puts a stupid "{user} joined the room" message in the room for everyone to see. Channel membership is anonymous.

2. Channels generate a public feed that doesn't require any special software to read from (see Durov: https://t.me/s/durov). Matrix requires a client of some kind, all clients are clunky at best and none have a public view.

3. Channels support millions of readers. Matrix rooms literally cannot do this, and rooms frequently get out of sync due to federation.

writtenone··on Telegram Desktop vulnerability allowed any user's file to be stolen
Telegram has channels, which are a one-to-many (thousands or millions of people) chat feature letting you have basically your own social feed.

Lots of people follow channels for on the ground news reporting, especially since it's not censored or "advertiser friendly" like social media companies are incentivised to be.

writtenone··on Anthropic bans 'abusive or cruel behavior' towards Claude
Claude is not sentient. It cannot love, think, or have compassion.

Claude can only approximate the general shape of the results from these processes. Even its "thinking mode" is not real thinking.

Treat it as a soulless robot; a utility, and nothing more.

I prefer to write words not code. I use WordPress because it hides all the complexity and lets me just write instead of messing with Markdown (or an entire separate system), CI pipelines, custom markup hacks for page features, Emacs cruft, etc..

Yeah WordPress is a security nightmare, but Ghost's editor sucks and there's no viable open-source alternatives with modern security and features.

writtenone··on Cops Can Bypass iPhone's Automatic Reboot to Get into Locked Phones
There's no world in which cops can or will only violate the privacy of obvious criminals.

It becomes "well we need to scan websites to make sure there's no X, Y, or Z, and prosecute the site operators who don't cooperate" real fast.

I can't believe anyone trusts AI to do anything without strict oversight from a human. That's absolutely insane to me.
writtenone··on Show HN: Whiteboard (YC W26) – An open-source IDE for thoughtful software design
I think we need less software with AI features. Less stuff chasing the hype train and more "slow" software that encourages thoughtfulness and less reliance on the machine.

I wrote some thoughts on this a while ago. They're not cleanly organized (sorry!) but it's my raw thinking on AI: https://nonograph.com/some-disorganized-thoughts-about-artif...

Also wrote this on the state of VC if interested: https://nonograph.com/write-some-software-give-it-away-for-f...

writtenone··on Show HN: Whiteboard (YC W26) – An open-source IDE for thoughtful software design
We need LESS of AI and more HUMAN thinking. The process of thought and the increased difficulty with increased complexity is a feature not a bug.

AI note taking is a scourge on society and needs to go.

writtenone··on LinkedIn wins court order blocking mass scraping of user data
Why would anyone use LinkedIn in the first place? It's not like anyone is getting jobs through it with all the AI slop and corporate kowtowing.

You'll also benefit from better privacy if you never register to begin with.

writtenone··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
This is exactly what I don't want.

I like point-and-click GUIs, no tiling, no MacOS style dock that wastes screen space, just the Windows UI without Microsoft! That's why I picked Linux.
