wsinks··on WWDC 2024 [video]
Thank you!
wsinks··on WWDC 2024 [video]
Yeah, the very first announcement is something that android has been able to do since... 2012? Surprising. I'd love to see the apple marketing persona info on who watches these.
wsinks··on WWDC 2024 [video]
Same behavior for me, I assume that they're going to let the thing play out and then you'll be able to replay once the event finishes. Not sure why this has changed from other livestreams.
wsinks··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (May 2024)
Location: San Francisco, CA

Remote: Preferred, but Hybrid fine within 20 miles of SF

Willing to Relocate: No

Technologies: Typical SaaS IT knowledge worker stack (JIRA, Confluence, gSuite, M365, Slack, some administration within all of those), SQL, Python, happy to learn new ones always

Resume: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OHXFiNmlyugmmYqSkvr5w1F3... (need to request access)

Email: will.sinks at gmail.com

About me:

I worked at Cisco Systems and AppDynamics (post acquisition) for 12 years doing keynote demo creation (both more fictional, lower stakes and high stakes, real live prototype Webex hardware and software), sales enablement program management, and general IT program management. I think my ideal company would be one that is moving quickly but needs more help listening in, building good communication streams across their teams, and getting people unstuck.

Lately I've been freelancing doing presentation design for data analytics projects, and would be happy to either just crunch your numbers or to take some sort of question you have for your business and ask questions until we can find repeatable easy ways to track what your business needs to grow. I would also be ecstatic to join an engineering team where I can use my years of experience building and honing products and get more experience playing Product Owner on a scrum team.

Marie Kondo (Konmari) had a bestseller in the NYTimes called "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up" in... 2010. Wow, I can't believe her book came out that long ago! Lots of useful fun ways to do things in there, which aren't as obvious to non-Japanese people because many of them stem from Japanese cultural values.

When did Cold Take start? I only just found it through recommendations in the last few months and absolutely love the whole vibe that Frost has captured.

I remember that video with the sponsor in the middle of it, and if I remember correctly showed Yahtzee's active disdain for it because he alluded to it before the sponsor bit, showing that he knew that it would interrupt the content that he was powerless to change it.

I'll have to follow Yahtzee and Frost wherever they go.

wsinks··on How to pronounce the trickiest English words
Man, WSJ lets me down again.

I've been following Julien Miquel for most of this year. Not _actually_ following him, but occasionally checking out how his youtube channel has progressed. It started with my gf showing me one of his videos for a word that I had never even heard of. What struck me at first was how inadvertently sensual he had made that specific video. And then, how in a 30 second video he butchered incredibly common pronunciations of "this" (thaaas) and "word" (werd).

Not that it's a problem. I'm in awe of his ability to chunk up and produce so many videos. He's found a niche and is filling it. I wonder if it actually pays him that much. I'm not sure, since most videos have only tens of views.

He does troll pronunciations too, like for the word "XXXXXXXXXXX", where he just says the letter X over and over. Maybe that was a test video.

I'm so in awe of him and I was hoping to learn more, and this article doesn't actually contact him or interview him or anything. What a tease! And they even get the lead wrong. Do people _choose_ Julien Miquel? Or has he SEO'd his way into the top of google results? I argue the latter. To this day, I would not choose Julien's choice of how to pronounce any English word. I might let him be a part of many different informed options..

I recently saw the website on here for YouGlish. That's the same niche, solved so much better.

But for now, Julien Miquel is probably my favorite 2023 performance artist, whether he's trying to or not.

wsinks··on California suspends Cruise's autonomous vehicle deployment
I'm not arguing with you, but is there any documentation of SF's predictive signaling and synchronization and how it's the best?
wsinks··on California suspends Cruise's autonomous vehicle deployment
I agree with you that the idea seems intuitively like it would be better, however I'm skeptical that it will work and that it is the 'correct' way to run traffic.

To quote your own example, this will be controlled by the government, which takes a long time to do physical infrastructure projects. So I would lately just assume it's not worth the investment dollars.

wsinks··on California suspends Cruise's autonomous vehicle deployment
I take point with your use of 'correctly' because traffic engineering cannot get every car to its destination without stopping it even if it knew every destination.

Cars already do talk to various traffic lights via underground sensors and occasionally a camera. The investment required to have a fully networked traffic light system with a centralized controller would be immense, and would create an organization with a natural government given monopoly.

Your use of 'correctly' paints a world that seems ripe for more corruption and ultimately worse timings across the network. If you wrote 'better', then I wouldn't have commented. I think I'm nitpicking

wsinks··on California suspends Cruise's autonomous vehicle deployment
I don't think that's true. Often times at night, there are long times for certain lights so the bigger throughput street can have more time on there. Human drives know about this, and will take different routes to get there. It's unclear that Cruise is mapping out light timings and their changes, although you would think they would.

I'm unfamiliar with a spirit-medium con and a Feng Shui conflict. Do you mean just a 'medium sized con game' and Feng Shui meaning that things just didn't line up in the ultimate vision?

I'd love to know more.

wsinks··on The bus ticket theory of genius (2019)
It still works if https, but the website appropriately tells you that the website 'isn't secure' because there's a certificate out of date.

Using http is fine because you're just trying to access a webpage and not do any sort of transactions, but not really a good general practice to do to just make things 'work'.

wsinks··on The bus ticket theory of genius (2019)
Yeah, looks like 'trustify' is potentially his hosting platform and something's wrong with the certificates.

If it isn't his site and is just a complete 1:1 replica, I'm not sure what that would achieve except mess up his analytics, which could be the case. Or maybe someone's trying to inject malware into our computers through it? Hmm

I tried to go through a link he posted and through google, and they all result in the same untrusted certificate.

I would guess just don't put your billing details into his site (joking, I don't think he has anything like that on there)

wsinks··on Presence of airborne microplastics in human lung tissue
Sure... but that's far from the ideal world where we don't need to replace our lungs. Replacing lungs is very inefficient.

According to this, there's some level of lung rejection in 90% of patients.

https://utswmed.org/medblog/lung-transplant-rejection/

That's a lot of management for a critical system... even if it's treatable.

"trolling" is another accepted spelling of trawling :)
wsinks··on Crimean bridge: Who – or what – caused the explosion?
> "This is a concrete manifestation of the conflict between the FSB [Russia's internal intelligence service] / PMC [private military contractors, like the Wagner Group] on the one hand, and the Ministry of Defence / general staff of the Russian Federation on the other hand," he said.

> Did Mr Podolyak know something everyone else didn't? Or was he, perhaps, trolling Moscow, playing on extremely raw nerves exposed by Russia's recent setbacks on the battlefield in Ukraine?

The use of trolling here isn't to carefully a systematically search for an area of something. The use is much more akin to the internet's version of the word, which has the meaning of 'saying something meant to bring an extreme response from another targeted party'.

If there was a mention of investigators trolling the area for evidence of bomb vehicles, I'm with you, even though that feels like an uncommon usage in a BBC article. But this does feel different to me.

wsinks··on Reality is just a game now
I used to think that it would be hard to imagine a time where 120 million people watched the same thing at the same time. And then I realized that's an outdated thinking. Here's my example:

There are certain ads that get played on campaigns. It's a longer time scale - not everyone is tuning in at the same time. But I've been able to communicated shared suffering over Forward ads to other people that I've met. If I like a similar topic to someone else and we both watch Youtube, then I guarantee they've seen (and hate) the "Toxic Poop Guy".

Instantaneous watching was the past. Experiencing the campaign is the now, in my opinion.

Sure, maybe not 120 Million people at the same time for a TV show. But it's definitely still out there.

I really appreciated this! I've heard of the five whys earlier in life, and later on I've heard of 'the 3 whys', part of the selling technique that everyone has to answer:

- Why buy anything? - Why buy from you? - Why buy now?

I knew it wasn't that, and the idea of the 5 Whys funnel crapping out at 3 Whys does make sense!

https://itsgame7.com/exact-moment-poker-fans-think-robbi-jad...

So.. is 3:45 the point where people think Robbi smacks the table and removes the ring?

It looks to me that the slap just moved the ring to the side. At 3:58 There’s something that appears to be the red ring still on her hand. Not to mention that before that moment, I can only make out one ring on her middle finger, and that ring band is still on her finger after.

I imagine they’ll look into that ring during their investigation. It’ll be interesting to see what comes of it.

This is definitely quite the statistical anomaly.

wsinks··on Changing Public Perception
Right! I was talking with a guy in... 2017-2019 who was a founder of a different company that got acquihired. I asked what he thought was so interesting about the web3 space (still just called blockchain then).

He noted that all he wanted to work on was the UX of it. That it was very cool at the time but that it was so complicated, that was where the value creation needed to be.

I think we're still waiting for that to come to fruition.

I wonder if there's an anti site for this one: https://web3isgoinggreat.com
