xandrius··on A thousand fewer paths to root
You should also upgrade yourself on what people expect nowadays. Might not be top talent but before I return to an office, hell will freeze over.
xandrius··on No brother of mine will play the flute
Nah, I just want to create my own team, a bunch of people who care about each other, together exploring this beautiful world.
xandrius··on US boy names that became girl names and vice versa
Yep, came to a similar conclusion for other countries too. Together with the fact that a lot of boy's names either feel old or overused, you don't really have the variety of names you get for girls.

Girls get flowers, gemstones, places, etc. while boys get old grandpa names.

xandrius··on Electrification Could Cut Global Energy Use in Half
Maybe due to subsidies in your area? Or simply the impact on the environment of gas isn't accounted into your bill?
xandrius··on An Italian farmer found some unknown seeds in his attic and planted them
Except the dude literally threw the seeds into cow shit because he didn't think nothing would come of them.
xandrius··on Shiny Object Syndrome
Why is such a small article being upvoted? It's basically just a definition page.
xandrius··on Serbia just elected the world's brainiest parliament
Ehhh, that's the flaw in the logic. Holding a PhD doesn't necessarily make you better at anything other than strictly the topic of the PhD (and sometimes not even that), maybe only following arbitrary orders from senior figures.
xandrius··on Tell HN: Scribd Breached
Yep, absolutely no feelings for that cancer of a website.
xandrius··on We're releasing the weights of Mistral Large 4
Your bias is showing.
xandrius··on Patrick Stewart has died
Yawn, just a title. People are here for the contribution of a person, not their title conferred by other people.

Yes, Mr Stewart existed.

xandrius··on Ask HN: Are you tired too in this AI era?
Refreshing take, what's bad of this AI period is all the anti-AI stuff around it.

Otherwise I've never been less stressed and chill in my working life.

I'm not sure if you could share the window manager but I'd love to get a glimpse of it, as it sounds interesting!

xandrius··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
Yap, you can do that too
xandrius··on New iMac with M6
And before then?
xandrius··on New iMac with M6
Trying using a Mac on which you cannot install latest Firefox and see how your statement holds.

That's one thing Windows is generally much better at.

xandrius··on Switzerland. Block by block. At 1:1 scale
Wow, how can you survive on HN I wonder? Nothing fun or not-profit-oriented must be liked by the plebs. Cmon relax, it's a fun student project.
xandrius··on Switzerland. Block by block. At 1:1 scale
You're surrounded by "powerful" LLMs, just get a subscription or pay for tokens. Literally any recent LLM can do that.
xandrius··on Switzerland. Block by block. At 1:1 scale
I also recommend sh3d to do exactly what you needed: got the plans of my home (straight out pdfs) fed them to an LLM and got the 3D version of it in minutes.

Then started plopping in furniture and such, wonderful experience. Then you can navigate your home as a "visitor" to get a better feel. Definitely more realistic than Minecraft for actual planning.

xandrius··on Neural chip decodes interactions between brain regions
Either you don't do sports either or you are living proof that sports don't fix all mental disorders.
xandrius··on Jailbreaking the Switch 2
You're not thinking capitalistically enough. It's part of the State of Things (tm) to have purchased things come and go. One day you can use them and another they are gone. Just as in nature, would you be surprised if you took a tomato and it stopped being good after a few weeks? Well, software is a bit like a tomato actually.

So yeah, pay us to give you "Super Mario NES Remake HD 2.1 Lite Remix Classic Super 4K Director's Cut" for just $169.99.

xandrius··on 90% of US working hours are spent on tasks not covered well by AI benchmarks
I did quite a few summers doing carpentry in the heat, and yes, I appreciate AC but what's your point?

Also if roofing was a non-problem anymore (we solved it somehow), would you want to have people doing it just for the sake of doing a job?

xandrius··on 90% of US working hours are spent on tasks not covered well by AI benchmarks
But working is a necessity of life, how can one find meaning without being stuck in an office doing useless stuff for money?! /s

That's the take many have been educated against: maybe one day a category of bullshit jobs will be gone and it's fine.

xandrius··on Ask HN: CAD for wood working with LLM support?
Why judging when someone prefers a different way to work than yours?
xandrius··on Gemini 4 Argon
Because you ignored them before someone told you about them.
xandrius··on `123456' password used in Danish CPR data breach
Ha, I don't need to type 123456, it's stored in my navigator's password manager for convenience. Checkmate.
xandrius··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
Are you calling my hardware old? ;(
xandrius··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
So, you'd get 1/11 of a renting a house in Nepal, so?
xandrius··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
Upcloud has the cheapest I found, you can get a full VPS for less than $4.
xandrius··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
I do self-host but the amount of maintenance that physical machines require is a cost in itself.

You placed the laptop in a location where slowly but surely there is a dust build up in the fans? You get some issues.

Hard drives start degrading? You get some issues.

And so on, while I've been running some personal things off VPSs too and those never had a single second of downtime. My home machine is my pride and joy but for sure 1 day a year on average there is something. But much cheaper in terms of raw components and performance.

So, yeah, it makes sense if you want the things you run not become a side job/hobby.

xandrius··on The lamps in my house
The first example is not really a coincidence: a second is defined by being the second subvision of an hour.

So that example fails to support any reason for akari matching light in English. But for the sake of argument here is another one: じゃり (giari, read as "ja-ri") in Japanese means gravel and in my dialect almost the same sound (giarin, "ja-ri-n") also mean gravel. Go figure.
