Papier looks interesting.

Auto Copy: Automatically copy selected text to the clipboard. Has options for copying as plain text; including the URL in the copied text; etc.

xeniak··on Why is printing “B” dramatically slower than printing “#”? (2014)
Sometimes I think these guys know something obscure, and then post a question about it just to answer it themselves.

SO actually allows this, Q and A from the same account. Some people use sock-puppets though.

xeniak··on Born to Rest
I don't think this is true, or at least not always true.

A good example is the armed forces, where recruits are forced into a very regimented routine.

My father was in the marines, and by his description they turned him from someone who lacked discipline and was not fit into the exact opposite.

When he retired, he kept up his routines: rising early, keeping fit. He's tried to instill the same discipline in his daughters - it's not as effective when it's not mandatory however.

xeniak··on The Fastest FizzBuzz in the West
Dustin seems to take offence at the idea that FizzBuzz would be used in a technical interview to screen job candidates.

Jeff Atwood on the other hand thinks it's a great way to filter out "developers" who can't program their way out of a wet paper bag:

xeniak··on My @JFK Twitter account “has been suspended and will not be restored”

I think our obsession with short/cool handles is strange, and even stranger is people building their "empire" on something that can be taken from you so arbitrarily.

It's the same as people expecting to get free-speech on Twitter/FB/Tumblr.

Even domains, which can't be taken from you on a whim, can be made far less "valuable" with the introduction on new TLDs.

xeniak··on Ask HN: What kind of projects should I build for a front-end portfolio?
The best contributions you can make on GitHub are legitimate ones: start using various libraries etc. and when you find bugs or missing documentation, open an issue or try and provide a PR.
xeniak··on Ask HN: Are open vacation policies a scam?
While 28 days is at the high end, almost all developed countries (UK, AU, FR, etc.) require employers to provide 4+ weeks per year paid holiday leave.

Bigger companies will even force you to take it once you've accrued a number of hours, as it can be a liability on the books (as unused holidays roll over indefinitely).

The US is an outlier in this regard.

xeniak··on All Olympic gold medal winners in the 100m sprint compared in one race
So the line is most accurate towards the end of a lap, and probably quite inaccurate at the start (given how much speed you gain during a coming out of a turn).
xeniak··on All Olympic gold medal winners in the 100m sprint compared in one race
> based on linear time difference

No point being animated then, as it's unlikely to be accurate.

I always wonder how accurate the WR line is for swimming events... is it linear, base on splits, or more granular?

xeniak··on Coursera’s co-founder Daphne Koller set to start anew at Calico
What about in the web/startup world? Although not a real meritocracy, proving you can program/hack/design gets you a lot further than a piece of paper with a stamp in it.
xeniak··on Ask HN: How have you left Google's services?
Prefixing with !sp will redirect your query to Startpage, which is essentially an anonymous proxy for Google.

So Google will still get to log and analyse your search terms, but they will be aggregated with all other users of Startpage - lots of noise.

I'll be interested in how much olympics coverage changes now that we're in a Netflix-style on-demand world.

This year was much the same as last, and there's been a lot of grumbling worldwide.

Will NBC lose their stranglehold? Will athletes be able to compete in more suitable times, rather than when NBC prime-time is?

Although sometimes not quite neutral, Mike Masnick at Techdirt offers a lot of insight on these topics: https://www.techdirt.com/

xeniak··on Return True to Win
Can you elaborate?
xeniak··on The brave new world of robots and lost jobs
I think it honestly depends on the political climate at the time: If it looks like a heap of truckers will lose their jobs, the government might step in and try and legislate sideways for jobs to remain - think mandating an operator for safety reasons.

I'm not a national of Australia but spent a significant amount of time there in the lower echelons of the auto industry; There the government could see that the local auto manufacturing industry was being priced out by lower-cost SEA operations, and not wanting to have "hard-working Aussies" lose their jobs while in power, were pressured into heavily subsidising (> 40%) some factory workers' salaries.

A couple of party changes later and this was wound back, and almost immediately the two largest employers in the sector announced they were pulling out.

The net result was that instead of some workers losing their jobs gradually, or the plants freezing hires and people seeing this an being incentivised to look at alternate industries for light-labour positions, several thousand workers are expected to be laid off all at once some time next year - fodder for a media shit-storm.

It's a bit off the topic, but the question is, where would those workers be if the government subsidies were instead used for educating/re-training?

xeniak··on Facebook rolls out code to nullify Adblock Plus’ workaround
