xparadigm··on Observations from people-watching
In my experience, it comes down to matching patterns.

Here's what I think likely happened: your friend talked to other people who went through tragedy. He noticed something common in their behavior. It can be something so subtle that it's invisible to most people, but your friend notices these kind of things. Then when he talked to the current person, he found the similar pattern.

xparadigm··on Small Tech (2020)
I think [BearBlog](https://bearblog.dev) qualifies too
xparadigm··on Tech Monopolies: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO) [video]
He did not talk about quite a few issues like this. I think that’s because the video is targeted for a less technical audience. But this video did make me think about the innovation the world is deprived of because of this monopoly. What wonders we miss because of this.
xparadigm··on Ask HN: What are some underrepresented open source projects that need support?
https://standardebooks.org/
xparadigm··on Ask HN: What are some great personal blogs/portfolios?
Whooa did you see this guy's website: http://sakibccr.com/ This is awesome! (Just kidding. It doesn't contain anything yet.)

But this is a really nice website: https://mango.pdf.zone/ Especially this post: https://mango.pdf.zone/operation-luigi-how-i-hacked-my-frien...

xparadigm··on Ask HN: Who is the most positive impactful person you know?
My high school physics teacher. She taught me the importance of being a good human being. And that being kind and empathetic to others is the best thing a person can do. That honesty and integrity are more important than winning. And she also taught me elementary physics.
xparadigm··on Show HN: I taught my little brother JS, and he made this videogame in a week
Played for a while and it's very good.
xparadigm··on Ask HN: My eyesight is not good enough to read HN. What can I do?
I set the zoom level to 130% in Firefox for this site only. It is persistant. I don't have to do it every time I visit the site. And it doesn't effect other sites.
xparadigm··on Ask HN: Best resources (free or paid) to learn Rust?
The Rust Book: https://doc.rust-lang.org/book/second-edition/index.html
xparadigm··on Ask HN: What is the best process to learn a new language?
If you have a movie or TV series which you watched so many times that you remember most of it, then try watching it dubbed in Spanish.
xparadigm··on Blogging with org-mode and Gitlab Pages
Actually you can use ANY static site generator with github. Be it hugo, octopress, jekyll, hakyll or your own hand.

That should be obvious because the “host-ability” of a static site doesn’t depend much on the tool you used to create it. If it outputs html file, a http server will serve them.

xparadigm··on Why George Guidall Is the Undisputed King of Audiobooks
For me the best was Richard Matthews reading "A Short History Of Nearly Everything"
xparadigm··on Is it possible for aliens millions light years away to see dinosaurs on Earth?
What if aliens use some other kind of telescopes? What if these aliens had no Galileo Galilei in their history and thus developed a very different kind of telescope say, the kind that uses gravitational lensing for optics?
xparadigm··on Ask HN: Can programming be learnt completely on smartphone?
Yes. My younger brother did learn programming in a phone. He started in Nokia 2700 Classic, which is not even a smartphone. Then he took a Samsung which runs Android. He certainly didn't become an expert using those devices. But he learnt the basics of Python.

One thing to note probably is, he started very young. And in young ages people can learn very easily. I don't think I can learn programming in a smartphone in my current age. But for kids, whole different game.

xparadigm··on Ask HN: Books you wish you had read earlier?
A Short History of Nearly Everything -- Bill Bryson
xparadigm··on India, Once a Coal Goliath, Is Fast Turning Green
Yeah unless India influences corrupt politicians of neighboring countries to make coal based power plants in neighbouring countries and imports electricity from those plants. Search "Rampal Power Plant", "greatest mangrove forest of the planet" etc. Also please see: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/20...
xparadigm··on Show HN: A clean, modern, interactive periodic table
Good job. Maybe if you changed the cursor property to pointer in search results. Also in table, not only over atomic number but also over the chemical symbol, maybe.
xparadigm··on Ask HN: Which static site generator you use?
You can deploy any static website with GitHub. You can't just run backend code and can't have a database there.
xparadigm··on Ask HN: Which static site generator you use?
This: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdiDYZ51a2o Not that I need that much speed. But could not resist.
xparadigm··on Ask HN: Lightest Linux distribution (DE agnostic)
Puppy Linux. (http://puppylinux.org) It runs from memory. That means it's super light.

On second thought, you can make Archlinux (https://www.archlinux.org/) really light. It doesn't run on memory but you can choose very easily whatever DE or services you want. So it's possible to make Arch super lightweight more easily than say, Ubuntu.

xparadigm··on Ask HN: Which static site generator you use?
Used Jekyll (https://jekyllrb.com/) for a while. But now Hugo (https://gohugo.io/).
xparadigm··on Ask HN: Your favourite human-sounding read aloud system?
I don't know how to do that. But you can read a text file with -f flag. This combined with -m flag which ignores html tags may result in what you are looking for. You will have to save the page every time you want to read.
xparadigm··on Ask HN: Your favourite human-sounding read aloud system?
Espeak. Not much human sounding but I like it.

xparadigm··on Ask HN: Can we find out why a specific ad appears in our Facebook feed?
I didn't use whatsapp. Facebook doesn't know my phone number. It's either a coincidence or what paulcole said. Or Facebook is tracking my location somehow.
xparadigm··on Ask HN: Can we find out why a specific ad appears in our Facebook feed?
I am not sure of that. But if Facebook does that, isn't that a breach of privacy?
xparadigm··on Ask HN: Can we find out why a specific ad appears in our Facebook feed?
That makes sense!
xparadigm··on Ask HN: Can we find out why a specific ad appears in our Facebook feed?
I meet a girl. She had a smartphone in which she had the Facebook app installed. I had a iPod which had a Facebook app installed too. But there was no wifi in the place we met. And my location services are always off in my device. I come home, and Facebook shows her as "People you may know." I had 32 mutual friends with her. So I let it go thinking it might be a coincidence.

Few days later, I meet a guy. Don't know if he had a smartphone or not. But I had my iPod. And there was no wifi. Location services are off. I come home. I see that guy as "People you may know." This time I had 2 mutual friends with him. Coincidence?

xparadigm··on Trigger Happy: An opensource clone of IFTTT
Loved the description of Trello. Kanban application. :)
