xtanx··on Memory executives expect RAM shortage to continue through 2028
How?
xtanx··on Go hard on agents, not on your filesystem
I would like to also suggest greywall[1] which i found yesterday. It sandboxes the filesystem, network, syscalls, dns. The network uses a transparent proxy to see which network requests were made. Supports linux and macos.

xtanx··on Let's discuss sandbox isolation
What about syd[1]? Is it faster than gvisor? Has anyone used it in a real life setting?

xtanx··on System76 on Age Verification Laws
That's why we need to organize extra hard.
xtanx··on System76 on Age Verification Laws
Organize and fight the policy. Do not take your frustration out on people and companies that just try to adjust to a law. Talk to your representatives. Create educational websites similar to fightchatcontrol.eu.
xtanx··on Louis Rossman: Politician calls constituents criminals with no right to privacy [video]
You are probably talking about chat control [1]. If it passes it will break encryption in the EU and yes... politicians, police and military are exempt. It is going to be a total disaster for everyone.

xtanx··on Mozilla rewrites Firefox's Terms of Use after user backlash
> If we need to do anything, it's get behind Ladybird

and servo please ...

xtanx··on Critical Exploit in MediaTek Wi-Fi Chipsets: Zero-Click Vulnerability
I would like to remind people of the 2016 Adups backdoor:

> According to Kryptowire, Adups engineers would have been able to collect data such as SMS messages, call logs, contact lists, geo-location data, IMSI and IMEI identifiers, and would have been able to forcibly install other apps or execute root commands on all devices.

xtanx··on Ask HN: Why are people so mean in the open source community? (about xz again)
You know... they could be just another malicious actor. I mean they appeal to emotions, github is not showing them as active in the community, pseudonym without any details in the profile. And by malicious actor I do not mean that they are trying to gain access, they could be just trolling Larhzu.
xtanx··on Ask HN: Why are people so mean in the open source community? (about xz again)
They are talking about the tone of the message. "it shouldn't be this hard" is not the proper way to report a bug at least not in a neutral way. It has the intention to make the maintainer feel bad and increase the likelihood of a change. And that was just in the title.
xtanx··on Jonathan Blow predicted the style of backdoor used in xz attack [video]
Adding a backdoor to closed source software if you are the government is (almost) free so I do not think that the argument he is making about cost is a valid one.
xtanx··on Cancer under age 50 increased 80% from 1990 to 2019
But it says that "All rates are reported per 100k population."
xtanx··on Vision isn't what you think it is – see for yourself [video]
The actual title of the video is "Your vision isn't what you think it is -- see for yourself"
xtanx··on Apple vs. Meta: The Illusion of Privacy
> I think it's unfair to compare Facebook actively screwing us to Apple not adopting your proposed metric

I don't think they were comparing. They were basically saying that Apple is complicit to what Facebook (and others) are doing with regard to data collection.

xtanx··on Android is now better than iOS, says head of Instagram
Well you also need to have a mac. And mac minis have 8gb of ram that makes them practically useless for serious work. So you need a >1000$ system.
xtanx··on Supporting the use of Rust in the Chromium project
No, they dropped the ball with servo. They should have continued developing it.
xtanx··on Older iPhones bricked for being too outdated, locking users from data [video]
No. iphone 6s supports ios 15 [0]. iphone 6 supports up to ios 12 [1]

xtanx··on PHP 8.2
Sure, but what stops them from modifying the database?
xtanx··on GitHub announcing a $10M open-source fund
> I did not start by reading huge quantities of source code, including sophisticated programs well beyond my current understanding, in all manner of languages and platforms. This seems very different to training a machine-learning model to me.

I don't really see how the complexity (which is subjective) of the source code one reads makes the training different.

xtanx··on Ask HN: Why is there no performant remote desktop for Mac/Linux?
> In essence, a good remote desktop software will use video encoding/decoding (h264/265 for both ways being very fast) to encode captured frames of the desktop, and a good transport protocol over the network with good tuning parameters to achieve low latency (which is what mine does). I believe this is what NoMachine and Parsec do and why they are so good (along with NICE DCV)

They do, but the paid version of NoMachine has?/had? a mode called X11 vector graphics explained better by NXDev here [0]. I've used it from 2016 until 2021 and for classic applications (ie apps not requiring a GPU) is incredibly fast. To the point that I used to forget i was working remotely.

xtanx··on GPSJam: Daily Maps of GPS Interference
Why so much over Cyprus and Turkey?
xtanx··on Apple Could Kill CAPTCHAs with Private Access Tokens
So lets start by NOT adding more things that snitch.
xtanx··on Let's build a distributed Postgres proof of concept
> Another approach could be using PostgreSQL as a stateless scalable query execution engine, while stubbing out the storage layer with a remote replicated consistent storage solution.

xtanx··on Show HN: Warp, a Rust-based terminal
For all the people that complain about phoning home. You are using macos or windows right? Isn't that what most apps do on those platforms? Chrome, firefox, your image viewer (macos), explorer (windows: the recent ad fiasco), docker, most electron apps, siri, cortana. Even login (windows). So now your terminal will do it too.

To make myself clear: I completely agree with you. Just pointing out the fun.

xtanx··on Each Firefox download has a unique identifier
> Approval granted by Privacy. Good to go.

Great job there "Privacy"...

xtanx··on I Don't Like Smartphones (2016)
> You can always use a burner phone with a fake identity if you want to stick it to the man.

You cannot do that everywhere (legally). For example in Greece you are required to give your id to the network provider or they block your sim card.

xtanx··on Meta threatens to shut down Facebook and Instagram in Europe
Obvious bluff.
xtanx··on Do not use Digital Ocean for production
Why was this flagged? It seems like a valid reason to post it on HN.
xtanx··on Dangerous bug in Chrome’s ‘New Tab’ page bypassed security features

xtanx··on Kobol Team Is Pulling the Plug from “Helios64 Open Source NAS”
Nooo. I really wanted a Helios64. Good luck to the team and I hopefully someone can create a similar product.
