yeeeloit··on Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure
Do you, personally, have a plan for the future? Like what are you doing about this, or are you hoping to be in the 1%?
yeeeloit··on Passkeys are a trap

> A better strategy is to play an assymetrical game IMO. Don't let your would-be master write the rules by which you play.

What do you mean by this? Do you have an example in the given context?

yeeeloit··on What happens to our breath when we type, tap, scroll
https://github.com/kieranabrennan/every-breath-you-take

Paired with the polar h10 strap is a good place to start.

I used it for a little while, and quickly found that I could only breathe properly and consistently whilst I was watching/aware of my breath. As soon as I started 'working' my breathing went back to terrible.

yeeeloit··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
I always wonder why safari doesn't get more attention in these sorts of claims against apple.
yeeeloit··on Intermittent fasting linked to a 91% higher risk of cardiovascular death
Exactly, this has come up before in other flawed studies. [1]

"Participants" are not necessarily fasting in the sense that the sensationalised headline/paper is making out.

More, good quality, studies are needed.

yeeeloit··on The Real-World Locations of 14 Sci-Fi Dystopias (2014)
Mad Max locations would be a good addition to this article.

The "Halls of Justice" and the underground parking at Melbourne Uni come to mind.

What a world to live in that would be.

yeeeloit··on Cork is displacing plastics and creating a billion-dollar industry
They are not superior. Convenient in certain circumstances, perhaps.

For example if one cannot be bothered to use, or does not have a corkscrew handy, a screw cap might be preferred for some.

I know it is difficult for most Modern Americans to use a corkscrew. Even more difficult is being able to appreciate the complexities and effort that goes into making good, traditional wine. Best to do away with tradition for the sake of convenience.

yeeeloit··on Show HN: Citadel – a Calibre-compatible eBook management app
> ... be a library it’s nowhere near real library (alphabetical list of authors).

What do you mean?

I just click the 'Author' column header and it sorts.

100gb is very big though. I guess I'm not surprised you would have problems with a library that size.

This post on reddit is relevant.

The way you describe FreeBSD is how I imagine an OS should be. I'm going to make it a goal this year to get a server up and running. Thanks.

-- Rant

Linux gives me more inferiority complex than any other technology I've ever touched.

Sure, something like a database system, or a moderately large code base or framework is complicated, and intimidating, and it might take many years to get a grip on, and understand, let alone master. But Linux? I just don't get it. I've tried for years, read books about it, etc. etc.

But in the end it's voodoo to me, and I'm always left searching for answers to problems, unable to solve them myself. The answers are always just rote step-by-step; do this and copy this command, problem solved. Why? how? nothing makes sense!!!

I always have the sense that somewhere out there is the holy bible of Linux, the missing piece of the puzzle; read this and it will all make sense.

Admittedly I've never compiled a distro. So in some respect I'm guilty of not going into the deep end. I suspect that if I learnt systems programming, and really go into the thick of it... then somewhere I might start to find my feet.

But it's easier to just believe that I'm stupid, and Linux is beyond my ability to comprehend.

yeeeloit··on Procrastination is connected to perfectionism
You have no idea what procrastination is.
yeeeloit··on Procrastination is connected to perfectionism
> Start there, and work through those emotions.

Do have any advice for how to deal with the associated negative emotions?

They seem kind of endless, and I'm not really sure what to do with them. I've tried things like mindfulness, meditation, journaling, talking about them and so on. But they just keep coming back, it's like they can't be resolved. It's quite painful, and I'm at a loss.

yeeeloit··on IBM demonstrates 133-qubit Heron
> When what used to cost 1,000 qubits and a complex logic gate architecture sees a tenfold cost reduction, it’s likely you’d prefer to end up with 133-qubit-sized chips – chips that crush problems previously meant for 1,000 qubit machines.

Is it just me (tired, and overworked) or is this poor writing?

edit: Oh man, this article is dreadful, what the heck? Is this ESL or AI or what is going on?

Another example picked at random, that's not even trying to discuss a complex topic:

> It's hard to see where the future of quantum takes us, and it’s hard to say whether it looks exactly like IBM’s roadmap – the same roadmap whose running changes we also discussed here.

yeeeloit··on Australia to ban engineered stone
Cutting stone and keeping 100% of it out of your lungs is nearly impossible, especially when you are working in uncontrolled environments like someone's kitchen that is being renovated.

The PPE available for this sort of work is just not up to the job.

yeeeloit··on Australia to ban engineered stone
Exactly, silica is not the problem. Silica is everywhere, we don't wear PPE to drive down a dirt road.

It's the silica plus the adhesive additives combined in your lungs that does the damage.

yeeeloit··on Growing scientific interest in vagus nerve stimulation
This is really interesting!

I have struggled with an issue during meditation for several years now. I get to a certain point and it feels like my body/mind is going to relax, but instead I get this intense rising feeling up into the back of my throat, followed by an itching sensation that causes me to cough, and break out of the moment. Extremely frustrating!!

I wonder what is going on with my vagus nerve.

You are correct. The reactionary and emotional comments in here are extraordinary.

We, the general public, simply do not have enough information at this point to judge this man's testimony, or the evidence that he provided.
