yellowcherry··on Beijing struggles to defuse anger over China's P2P lending crisis
It's reported in the Chinese media almost daily right now.
yellowcherry··on New data on college majors confirms old trend: technocracy is crushing humanism
No, not everything. But this can be.
yellowcherry··on Six Months at Riot Games
You have some very very wrong ideas about how the world actually works.
yellowcherry··on To Remember Everything You Learn, Surrender to This Algorithm (2008)
I'm using DroidAnki on my phone as part of my efforts to learn Mandarin. It took a bit of time to figure out how best to configure it, but now that I have it tuned to my liking, it's a great tool. It's not the only tool I've been using, but it's one of the most helpful.
yellowcherry··on Are Facebook and YouTube quasi-governmental actors?
Sounds in the same ballpark as China's "social credit score."

Don't think this is satire that can't happen.

yellowcherry··on The Oldest Building in Every US State
Yeah, he didn't burn Savannah, which was by far the oldest city on his route. Atlanta wasn't even 30 years old when he burned it.
yellowcherry··on As Google Maps Renames Neighborhoods, Residents Fume
What I'm noting in these articles is an absence of mentions of Google or newspapers.
yellowcherry··on Young people don’t want construction jobs
My dad did these jobs his whole life. He's in still in better shape than I've ever been and has a union pension better than anything any company has ever offered me.

So.

yellowcherry··on Thieves escape by motorboat after royal jewels heist in Sweden
I always assume there's a buyer lined up before these things ever happen.

But then, when they stole The Scream a while back they clearly had no exit strategy, so who knows?

yellowcherry··on The death of Don Draper?
As the article explains, they did make ads for the Da Vinci. Several, in fact. To make it "iconic", they built up the brand.

The ad that's just looking at people looking at it is brilliant, really a work of art on its own.

The effort that went into selling that painting is one of the more fascinating stories of the last year.

yellowcherry··on How did Google get so big?
I have exactly the opposite experience, time after time after time.

The one area where Google search provides me with a notably better experience is in image search.

yellowcherry··on Annoyed by Restaurant Playlists, a Master Musician Made His Own
Spotify has a service for businesses that includes all the relevant license fees.

yellowcherry··on Live tracking of Amtrak trains
Yay! An official version. This site has been doing it "unofficially" for years, but I'm sure even they will be happy there's a real Amtak version now.

yellowcherry··on The Allure of Small Towns for Big City Freelancers
I'm living in a small town right this moment where is is all possible. Toss in a library, a bar, a couple barbers, and a fresh bakery too.
yellowcherry··on Facebook to publish data on Irish abortion referendum ads
I couldn't care less about abortion on a personal level. It has zero impact on my life and never will.

But it's very clear to me that it's an artificially promoted issue that plays on people's emotions.

Divisive issues are not accidents. They're focusgrouped and marketed with extreme care.

yellowcherry··on Facebook to publish data on Irish abortion referendum ads
It doesn't "simply come up"

Tens of millions of dollars keep it in the forefront of your brain. There is no accident here. There is no "simply comes up"

yellowcherry··on As the SpaceX steamroller surges, European rocket industry vows to resist
I have no idea what this headline is supposed to mean.

"Vows to resist"

Resist what, exactly?

yellowcherry··on Dozens of PC games drop tracking software after surveillance fears
As outraged as people pretend to be, they'll still buy the next game.
yellowcherry··on Facebook to publish data on Irish abortion referendum ads
I'd take this concern seriously if we weren't 50 years or more into carefully chosen and promoted intentionally divisive issues shaping what everyone thinks of politics.
yellowcherry··on Art technicians: The industry’s dirty secret, or all part of the process?
Picasso is kind of an interesting example. In his later years, he got involved in ceramics, working with a small factory in the south of France. He turned out hundreds of designs, some made by the factory artisans in editions that ran into the 100s of copies.

For years they were ignored, but they've been growing steadily in value as they come to be seen as worthy Picasso works in their own rights.

They aren't really "new" Picassos, but they hadn't been considered as valid as they are now.
