yhoiseth··on Large tech companies don't need heroes
> Far better to let the company be punished for its failings, so it can (slowly, slowly) adjust, or be replaced by companies that operate better.

Well, if the company is replaced due to lack of heroes, doesn’t this mean that it actually needs heroes?

The industry as a whole might not need them, and it may be bad for individual heroes (though I think it’s more nuanced than that), but it seems to me like any particular company might need them.

yhoiseth··on AI could have written this: Birth of a classist slur in knowledge work [pdf]
Sarkar argues that “AI shaming arises from a class anxiety induced in middle class knowledge workers, and is a form of boundary work to maintain class solidarity and limit mobility into knowledge work.”

I think there is at least some truth to this.

Another possible cause of AI shaming is that reading AI writing feels like a waste of time. If the author didn’t bother to write it, why should I bother to read it and provide feedback?

yhoiseth··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
I’d use a boilerplate like SaaS Pegasus.

Supabase may be what you’re looking for

yhoiseth··on The collapse of complex software
Agree that this helps in some ways, but it also adds complexity. You can e.g. subscribe to a billing SaaS, but then you have to link your system to the billing system somehow
yhoiseth··on Apple Unveils M2
I saw an interesting idea floating around a while back: Put in a screen instead of the trackpad. I can see it being useful for drawing as well as picking emojis and so on, but it couldn’t be always available like the touch bar can.
yhoiseth··on The balance has shifted away from SPAs
Thanks for sharing.

Have you considered adding a “business app” category? Thinking of things like CRMs and learning management systems. Maybe Salesforce would be the holotype?

yhoiseth··on Elon Musk to join Twitter’s board of directors
Considering/discussing is very different from actually making it happen.
yhoiseth··on Show HN: HomeSheet – easy-to-use home inventory software
Looks great! I entered a value for an item, and it was automatically denominated in USD. The amount I entered was in NOK. How can I change the currency? I checked the profile page, but I couldn’t find it there.
yhoiseth··on Why income share agreements did not work out
Interesting take — hadn’t thought about it that way before.

There is one crucial piece missing, though: universities’ incentives. At least in Norway where I live, universities are paid the same for many STEM, humanities and social sciences programs. This causes an oversupply of e.g. historians compared to e.g. software developers, as universities are free to ignore labor market realities.

yhoiseth··on Elevator.js (2015)
It’s elevator music. Relax and enjoy the ride
yhoiseth··on Show HN: EdgeDB 1.0
Congrats with 1.0. A couple of things I’m curious about:

1. How does EdgeDB compare to Supabase? Thinking both of realtime functionality and row-level security. 2. If I was to use EdgeDB instead of Django, how would I go about it? In other words, how can I set up a batteries-included, server-side web app?

yhoiseth··on You block ads in your browser, why not in your city?
An adblocker would be a killer app for AR glasses.

yhoiseth··on Ask HN: What mental models do you use everyday?
Some I try to live by:

- Praise in public, criticise in private

- You could leave life right now

- Fix yourself first

- Be honest

yhoiseth··on A problem repeatedly occurred with Safari 14.1
I don’t have access to the statistic you are referring to, so we might be talking past each other. But, as far as I can tell, macOS is a growing part of Apple’s revenue, at least over the last year:

According to https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2021/04/apple-reports-second-..., Apple “posted a March quarter record revenue of $89.6 billion, up 54 percent year over year …”.

Mac, on the other hand, grew by 69 percent year over year.

yhoiseth··on A problem repeatedly occurred with Safari 14.1
> Mac sales went from $5.4B to a record $9.1B year-over-year.

yhoiseth··on Django 3.2
How productive are you with FastAPI compared to Django? I’m thinking of things like forms, error handling and all the other extra stuff that comes with decoupling the frontend and backend.
yhoiseth··on The Economics of Falling Populations
Scale by Geoffrey West and Why Information Grows by Cesar Hidalgo both support on the idea that we need a lot of people to have a high standard of living.

They come at it from different angles, but agree that (large) social networks are crucial for the generation and execution of ideas.

yhoiseth··on Show HN: Rust-starter, a boilerplate to build Rust CLI applications
Looks great! I’ve missed something like this. A couple of questions:

1. Is there an example application that uses the starter?

2. Does it follow the command line interface guidelines at https://clig.dev?

yhoiseth··on Pip has dropped support for Python 2
I’ve tried a few, and my favourite combination is pyenv-virtualenv and pip-tools.
