yipbub··on Owed a billion dollars in Nvidia stock
oops, yeah. I understood that wrong.
yipbub··on Owed a billion dollars in Nvidia stock
He's saying they didn't actually get exercised as-in stock was never made his. They took the money and didn't issue him the shares, but the statue of limitations is gone on the fraud.
yipbub··on EU to crack down on TikTok, Instagram's 'addictive design' targeting kids
Thanks, I'm an adult and I need it too
yipbub··on Google Search Is Down
The status dashboard doesn't seem to be showing anything, but it's been down for a few hours for me.

yipbub··on Atlassian says it had right to fire engineer for suggesting CEO is 'rich jerk'
You're either being naively or facetiously too literal. She's saying that her point is about him, so talking about him is ad hominem, but not a fallacy because unlike fallacious ad hominem attacks, her argument about the hominem is very relevant to her working conditions and experience as an employee. Her group having just been pummelled and yelled at.
yipbub··on European Tech Alternatives
Maybe it can be aspirational.
yipbub··on I want to wash my car. The car wash is 50 meters away. Should I walk or drive?
I used a paid model to try this. Same deal.
yipbub··on Replit founder Amjad Masad isn’t afraid of Silicon Valley
I think it's taking things too literally and pointedly ignoring the subtext while unintended or not having subtext of their own.

feels like sophistry

the article connects the two, so they are not orthonogonal either:

> But even as things got noisy in public, Masad met eerie silence professionally. “My calendar was suddenly empty, because I was talking about Palestine,” he said. “Replit was not a hot company anymore. We did a layoff. And at the same time, a lot of my friends were no longer my friends. I was no longer invited to parties.”

> Potential partnerships dried up. Masad became a frequent topic in pro-Israel tech groupchats, a source said, where some investors accused him of being antisemitic.

> A Replit investor who requested anonymity to speak candidly told me Masad’s public persona has been “really challenging,” and he’s had to defend the founder in investor circles. I asked if Masad had lost business because of his views. “I’m sure the answer is yes,” the investor said.

yipbub··on iPhone Typos? It's Not Just You – The iOS Keyboard Is Broken [video]
I remember when I could blindly type because autocorrect was so good. I've been enjoying FUTO keyboard a bit, but I dont yet know if it's the same experience.
yipbub··on GrapheneOS is the only Android OS providing full security patches
I don't understand your syntax:

    `You+App --Read/Write-> f_private(your_data) <--Write only- 3p`
Does this mean a server where third parties can send code to run on your data, but cannot respond to them?
yipbub··on Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues
Probably better not to shout in the first place.
yipbub··on Scripts I wrote that I use all the time
I have mkcd exactly ( I wonder how many of us do, it's so obvious)

I have almost the same, but differently named with scratch(day), copy(xc), markdown quote(blockquote), murder, waitfor, tryna, etc.

I used to use telegram-send with a custom notification sounnd a lot for notifications from long-running scripts if I walked away from the laptop.

I used to have one called timespeak that would speak the time to me every hour or half hour.

I have go_clone that clones a repo into GOPATH which I use for organising even non-go projects long after putting go projects in GOPATH stopped being needed.

I liked writing one-offs, and I don't think it's premature optimization because I kept getting faster at it.

yipbub··on CBA hiring Indian ICT workers after firing Australians
Don't confuse liberal capitalists, libertarians, etcs with leftists. It's free market liberals and right wing libertarians that espouse this kind of free market stuff.

The people most commonly calling nazis nazis(with some rare hyperbole) are leftists and they definitely didn't vote for this. They want market regulation.

Also, if you were complaining about immigrants when you got called a nazi, please consider that the skilled immigrants taking tech jobs would be buying at your local businesses and paying taxes in Australia if you let them in. Now your corporate overlords will pay them to spend in India.

yipbub··on Random selection is necessary to create stable meritocratic institutions
The examples you use are disingenuous and irrelebant. They were judge decisions, not jury ones, one was a minor with mental issues.

Over-prosecution of minorities is a documented bias.

No, if the biases were flipped, this kind of study would still not be evidence of racism. In the context of all the other studies and the history of slavery and racism, it is reasonable to _guess_ that white jurors are not discriminating against white defendants, and that sampling bias is to blame.

yipbub··on Ask HN: Does anyone use sound effects in their dev environment?
I have these that come from history|grep espeak

From a particularly sunny day where I was having too much fun waiting for my builds:

while ps -49011;do sleep 3;done;espeak "IT'S DONE YOU FUCK. COME WORK.";telegram-send "done"
More regularly:

gh pr checks 2850 --watch ; while true; do espeak "main done";sleep 5;done
yipbub··on Type in Morse code by repeatedly slamming your laptop shut
Not the Thinkpad in the video though
yipbub··on Can a law make social media less 'addictive'?
Thank you for sharing your experience. It was valuable to me!
yipbub··on Can a law make social media less 'addictive'?
I wonder how many people talking about self-control have a good relationship with their phone? I don't know anyone personally who likes their relationship with their phone.

I've been considering and trying to practice being kinder to myself, my phone, and my relationship with it. I still want to use less of it, but it's now a part of us, and will take time to almost amputate. I want to just stop feeding it, and let it die off slowly, peacefully instead of amputating it with a hacksaw.

Any kind of self-control based on shame seems doomed to be a vicious cycle.

yipbub··on There's more to mathematics than rigour and proofs (2007)
Right.
yipbub··on The regenerative urban garden I: No-till gardening
Seems like tilling might be counterproductive long-term then:

> Tilling and plowing are almost synonymous with land cultivation, aren't they? Yet they actually destroy soil structure, create compaction, and kill the very soil biology that's the basis of fertility, like fungal networks and all those earthworms that make the soil nice and squishy.

https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/tillage_practices_have_a_direc...

> According to the Michigan State University Extension, compaction is also a common side effect of tillage – at the soil surface, the plow layer and the subsoil.

I read it, missed this too, hmmm'd at your comment, but went back because usually these amateur communities are nerds enough that there's usually a reason behind this kind of thing. :)

"Hmmm" is a great reaction. It made me dig deeper and learn something.

yipbub··on The optimal amount of fraud is non-zero (2022)
I think it's just phrased unintuitively. "Balance usability against security hoops to jump through" sound better to me. You have to get to the last paragraph of the fifth section of this article before it makes anything resembling that statement. This could have been a paragraph or three.
yipbub··on Interview with Jeff Geerling
> I've reviewed my comments and this is mostly false. Not sure why you felt you needed to put this one in here.

Huh, me too. Could've sworn I saw this, and now I don't. My bad...

yipbub··on Interview with Jeff Geerling
You replied to many top level comments for a period of time the same period of time with almost the same text. Telling people to disregard this one persons tech content because of software-politics views. Does he not also have the right to call out IBM/Red Hat?
yipbub··on 10k Bounty for Rewriting Prettier in Rust
Is this going to be a race? Multiple people implementing it in parallel and one claims the prize?
yipbub··on Interview with Jeff Geerling
You seem to be on a crusade of the same level of "hate"(your standards, not mine) too. Against a person in fact.
yipbub··on Interview with Jeff Geerling
Ex-Redhatter that watched stuff go down while defending it till I stopped (much after I left). That's not Redhat anymore, it's IBM.

The lovely RHEL people and CentOS people didn't have a say. We kept hearing and believing that the CentOS stream change was never intended to break CentOS users until they hid the sources.

RHEL is built on open source products, and support is sold. To innovate in open source by coming up with ways to get around GPL (we'll retaliate if you publish our legally publishable sources IIUC) is evil. In direct violation of what every other contributor to linux/GNU/anything GPL ever released their software under.

Disclaimer: I was part of other projects, not this directly, and I had nothing, but respect and love for everyone I worked with. We were in denial then too.

yipbub··on Typing fast is about latency, not throughput
The amazing stuff often has certain level of challenge, excitement, and reward behind it that compensates for the long feedback loops. It's not necessary for sure, but it sure is nice!
yipbub··on Go, Containers, and the Linux Scheduler
Interesting. This is not true for Memory, correct? The OOMKiller might get you.

You also cannot achieve a QoS class of Guaranteed without both CPU and Memory limits, so the pod might be evicted at some point.
