yipopov··on Bill and Melinda Gates Are Paying Off Nigeria's $76M Debt to Japan
>Yes, truly how terrible they are to spend money encouraging the eradication of polio.

Yes, that was what the loan was for. Even if it all went to its intended purpose, that doesn't excuse apparently not budgeting for any repayment. I expect that money is currently lining someone's pocket in Lagos.

I'd have been more impressed if they spent the money directly to tackle the next challenge and letting the politicians answer personally to Japan regarding the whereabouts of their money. Instead they are encouraging more loans and more corruption.

yipopov··on Implementation Inheritance Is Evil
I'm curious what HN thinks of the current trend in languages like Kotlin and Typescript of having getters and setters masquerade as properties.

Then again if you have to use accessors in the first place you have already committed the crime and exposed the internals and might as well just go with the simpler syntax instead of trying to fool yourself with a bunch of getFoo()s and setFoo()s.

yipopov··on Two genes in Chromosomes 13 and 14, linked to Homosexuality
I know the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox do in fact practice things like abortion and contraception, but they are still highly controversial subjects and far from universally accepted in the hierarchy.

I still think it's a pretty fair generalisation of traditional Christianity and the vast majority of Christians (liberal western Protestants are a minority on the global scale, and even they don't universally accept abortion and contraception, take for instance Pastor Anderson)

yipopov··on In the eating disorder unit
That said, it should not be underestimated what an immense strain those people are on mental health workers. I wonder how much time those institutions dedicate to debriefing their own staff, I think that would make a big difference in how the patients are treated as well.

Another example of this idiocy is the lack of goto in WebAssembly
yipopov··on How Neglecting Minorities in Medical Research Has Led to Deadly Outcomes
What's the relevance of the minority status?

Would a drug proven effective for whites and ineffective for blacks in the US suddenly become effective for blacks and ineffective for whites if administered in Zimbabwe?

Or do you mean "minorities" in the "there are too many minorities in my waterpark" sense?

yipopov··on How Neglecting Minorities in Medical Research Has Led to Deadly Outcomes
Good luck defending this as long as it's deemed political wrongthink to say there are any biological differences between races.

If everyone is the same, why bother with diverse studies?

yipopov··on Two genes in Chromosomes 13 and 14, linked to Homosexuality
That's hypocrisy, not cognitive dissonance. Though I suppose a lot of hypocrites also experience cognitive dissonance.

But if you're going to accuse someone of hypocrisy I think you should be a bit more specific about exactly who you are accusing.

yipopov··on Two genes in Chromosomes 13 and 14, linked to Homosexuality
Yes, but in the context of upholding traditional Christian moral standards that's not an option that's on the table, and neither is using contraception. Celibacy, or to be more precise, abstinence, is the only option.
yipopov··on Two genes in Chromosomes 13 and 14, linked to Homosexuality
Surrogacy is legal in many parts of the world, and the women are often not in a good position to resist pressure to have abortions.
yipopov··on Two genes in Chromosomes 13 and 14, linked to Homosexuality
Celibacy means you won't have any children. Same reason why a carrier of the Huntington's disease gene may choose celibacy instead of reproducing.

Whose cognitive dissonance?
yipopov··on Browserling goes viral with cheap phone users trying to use WhatsApp
I tried bringing up an Android VM and see if I could escape the web browser and get to an app store, but couldn't, at least not by doing anything more than just poking around with the mouse (if the Indians in question had the know-how to do something more intrusive I doubt they would need Browserly to circumvent the restriction in the first place). And it would be strange if Browserly would allow the browser to be escaped and software to be installed, it's practically asking for his service to be abused.

So I'm pretty sure what they want is to access the Whatsapp web interface and use Browserly for user agent spoofing, circumventing geographic blocking or some kind of blocking on their phones like a 0.0.0.0 entry for whatsapp.com in the hosts file. Either way it's a major dick move if you ask me, especially when there is no shortage of services built for this exact purpose.

yipopov··on Poop and Soda Bottles Threaten Air Force Rocket Program, Investigators Say
Don't they typically test rockets in outdoors test ranges? And aren't rockets normally supposed to be able to operate outdoors?

Of course there is going to be dirt, rocks and yes, even fecal matter. What are they supposed to do, blow their hot exaust gases into a climate-controlled cleanroom?

yipopov··on Running tomcat with systemd

yipopov··on Browserling goes viral with cheap phone users trying to use WhatsApp
>Let’s try another more illustrative question - what would the reaction be if he were an Indian in India doing that to Indians or doing it to Americans.

Probably just a lot of people shrugging and saying "I guess this guy doesn't want us abusing his free service for our own gain" and "it was fun while it lasted".

All indications pointed towards all these people using his service in bad faith. I went to his website and it's obviously meant for cross-browser testing, not spoofing your user agent, circumventing regional restrictions or whatever it was preventing them from accessing Whatsapp directly.

yipopov··on What Is It Like to Be a Bee?
> refusing to accept that someone is depressed

The depression is not what's being contested. The claim that they belong to the opposite sex just because they say so is what's being contested.

yipopov··on What Is It Like to Be a Bee?
> I'm not talking about the medical treatment. > My question was why do you believe those people need an external frame of reference to know whether those feelings are correct or not?

I don't know. I'm sure many genuinely feel this way and I'm sure there are those who pretend in order to fit in, but then again you can say that about anything.

What's in my opinion much more interesting is how to deal with it in the public forum. I think it's fair to require something more than just a subjective feeling in order to treat these people as being of the opposite sex, up to and including performing surgeries on them to make them look the part.

> You implied they do, but haven't explained why.

I can't possibly tell what people are thinking, I can only discuss what people say and do.

> that statement assumes your position on the issue in question. Is it like an eating disorder or not?

I think they are distinct conditions with distinct causes and treatments, but I think in both cases I think treatment should value physical facts over subjective feelings, which is an uncontroversial position for eating disorders, but a controversial one for gender dysphoria.

> I can't parse the meaning of this sentence.

I mean that even without an external frame of reference you do have a perfectly good internal one. Most people alternate between being hungry and not being hungry several times a day and know perfectly well what either feels like.

> Your comment also appears to suggest that a life of depression and potential suicide is preferable to the medically accepted palliative treatment that has shown itself to be quite life-altering indeed,

That only follows if that outcome is inevitable and that highly invasive treatment is the only solution. For example I have a hard time seeing it as particularly necessary for patients with autogynephilia, which seems to be the largest group among men.

> at least enough to prevent this outcome.

Hardly enough, see http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal....

Maybe there is some comorbidity, which if treated, the gender dysphoria could be resolved as well without invasive treatment.

yipopov··on What Is It Like to Be a Bee?
I'm very familiar with gender dysphoria research, and I'm also familiar with the endless stream of vitriol (but no actual scientific refutation as far as I have seen) against people like Blanchard, Bailey, Lawrence et al. as soon as they say something that doesn't fit the political objectives of the activists.

My interest isn't with the politics, it's with the science, which does seem like it's well within the scope of Hacker News.

yipopov··on What Is It Like to Be a Bee?
The question of what it's like to be someone or something else is much more immediate with all the youngsters who claim they feel like the opposite sex and have done so their whole lives, despite of course not having any frame of reference for those feelings. And based on those feelings alone we're told they are to be injected with life-altering chemicals and have life-altering surgeries.
yipopov··on Academic success is either a crapshoot or a scam
If you don't mind I'd rather not have my name linked with fraudulent academic articles, regardless of who exactly the guilty party is.

I could have just said "What the linked article says is correct", but I figured this anecdote would add more value. But yeah, whether you want to believe it or not, the linked article is pretty accurate. Successful academics either get lucky or they are frauds.
