ytxm··on Leaking Secrets from Air-Gap Computers by Spelling Radio Signals from RAM (2024)
Ignoring the obvious "dmd is truly blazing fast" quip, wildly curious how this happened to you twice? Was it the PSU? Only once heard of a house fire caused by a computer, but no information on component actually caused it.
ytxm··on Anthropic may not secure investment-grade rating after IPO, Blackstone says
I saw a (highly reputable of course) tweet a few days back suggesting all of OpenRouter's DS4 traffic would fit on a single rack of modern Nvidia kit.

Given the only practical alternative to a jurisdiction with strong data protection laws is a home rig, as the saying goes, still cheap at twice the price.

Surprised that "do you really think we're going to make it?" scene made the cut of the first video, her expression and tone is totally out of sync with the scene and demonstrates the problem with almost every AI gen video I've come across when it comes to capturing humanity.

The painting->interactive scene looks astonishing though

ytxm··on Concerning behavior from a popular open-weight AI model
This is the first OMG-security AI article that sat well with me. They don't overcook their claim, they simply document something that happened, and what happened is genuinely quite concerning.

But we already have safeguards for this. If compute has access to your private data, it shouldn't have unfettered access to the Internet. Sandboxes like Claude's have had rules like this baked in forever (they only whitelist package repos AFAIK).

From a UI perspective this is also easy to design around. You need an open Internet task, you prevent the task from reading existing files. The user tries to upload a file to such a task, and a prominent warning explains the rare but possible risk.

ytxm··on Bbtree: Fastest Ordered Map
The dynamic web-paper format is nice for expository instructional articles, but here as much time is spent skipping over dynamic stuff in search of human involvement, of which there is thankfully plenty, than reading about the invention itself. It has at least been copyedited by someone even if the structure feels somewhat robotic.

For a map<String, usize> of /usr/share/dict/words (with the value being the dict offset), measuring this consistently using 40% more RAM than std::collections::BtreeMap. Their claim of less memory usage was specifically for integers, so this is more a data point than a refutation.

Glorious. Today of all days it would genuinely give me pause for caution.

edit: yeah, really not feeling that: https://github.com/php/php-src/compare/php-8.2.34..php-8.2.3...

Hopefully just a mistake? But looks like a botched release at the least

ytxm··on DeepSeek just open-sourced its inference engine
You know your subscription is unsustainably subsidised by debt and likely to change at any moment, yet relying on it provides more peace of mind than buying from someplace that are extremely transparent about their costs. That's an interesting approach to say the least
ytxm··on There is no official XScreenSaver GitHub repository
Opening with the word "I" and continuing in that manner is the real reason there's no official xscreensaver repository
ytxm··on How employment is changing at Anthropic
They're celebrating elimination of junior work while offering no explanation for how future senior staff are trained, and measuring output by code volume. Lol who wrote this, can't wait to see how this plays out, if you asked even a junior they could have told you that's a terrible idea.
ytxm··on DeepSeek-v4.1-Flash-1017
I gave it a kick and got mixed results. For example, searching for a Microsoft product couldn't find its landing page, and searching for a niche open source package landed in the Debian repos for the top hits, but the home page was in the first 10 hits.

Lovely to see they're doing their own search though, I love how many folk are actively working on search clones at the moment.

Scaleway have DS4. I don't think they call it ZDR, but their framework is very strong https://www.scaleway.com/en/docs/generative-apis/reference-c...
ytxm··on DeepSeek-v4.1-Flash-1017
It passed my threshold for not caring to try new models back with DS4, I use it for literally everything. Announcements of new models in the series always feel curious, because it doesn't really feel like there's much left to fix that would improve on what's already there for any task I know of.

It's a bit like obsessing over patch releases of some software after a major upgrade already solved the original problem long ago.
