zhoBEENG··on Kalshi and its co-founders face felony charges for violating Utah gambling laws
If a non-gambler has investments in gambling companies (say, VTI which contains multiple comparables to Polymarket/Kalshi), then they profit. I literally make money off those who cant help themselves, every day.
zhoBEENG··on Any Human Ever – One life, drawn at random from all who have ever lived
I did a statistical analysis and you are correct. The issue seems to be that crude birth rates from around 500CE and earlier are overestimated significantly. The bad source seems to be Kaneda & Haub, "How Many People Have Ever Lived on Earth?", where they assume a flat crude birth rate of 80 for all BCE dates. The probability distribution is just a function of pop and CBR, so it results in significantly decreasing modern birth probabilities.
zhoBEENG··on Muse Spark 1.3
Would it help you understand if they were labelled "For Dumb Fucks" and "For Everyone Else"?
zhoBEENG··on Meta's blockbuster trial draws parallels to big tobacco
IIRC, the lovely book Addiction By Design: Machine Gambling in Las Vegas claims that gambling addiction was a concept pushed by the casinos, to put the blame onto individuals, rather than the machine.
zhoBEENG··on Frontier LLMs know more facts than they can recall
I would guess that all sufficiently capable models necessarily contain the information in question, regardless of what guardrails are on that information. I think this is a corollary to the Platonic Representation Hypothesis / model convergence.

Would be curious to hear arguments against this.

zhoBEENG··on Influencers face backlash over Meta 'pervert glasses' content
In the US, Meta sold 7 million glasses units last year and is projected to sell 25+ million next year. Waymos already record everything happening in most of the area of many cities, and use much more than just cameras. 6g standard has sensing built in. Perhaps it is not the West Coast that is in the bubble.
zhoBEENG··on Everything you do is being recorded
I do not carry a cellphone, but I own an old one with no data plan that remains off and in a drawer except for when used for things like this. I am not sure I have run into any stores that require 2 factor. Mostly just official stuff like banks.
zhoBEENG··on Everything you do is being recorded
That is very interesting. I wasn’t aware of their ability to act as acoustic sensors. It makes sense, but it’s not my field so I hadn’t thought about it.

Any link to the trachea vibrations to reproduce inner monologue source?

I think the major shift with the 6g standard is that general purpose sensing is now explicit to the design and intended use of the system.

zhoBEENG··on Everything you do is being recorded
We agree on when to meet and where, and then we both actually show up. The whole last-minute plan changing thing is a pretty recent phenomenon, I believe.
zhoBEENG··on Everything you do is being recorded
For sure, but you still do retain the option to leave it at work, unless you have some kind of 24/7 sales job. I do think privacy at work is not an option for most people.
zhoBEENG··on Everything you do is being recorded
Genuinely. Thinking back on it now, the only times I notice it is in some restaurants that don’t have paper menus out by default. I need to ask for one, which feels very odd and kind of awkward. This is the only instance I can think of.
zhoBEENG··on Everything you do is being recorded
I do not carry a cellphone. I am employed and live in a major city. I never think about not having one. I know multiple other people, also employed, living both rurally and in cities, who do not carry cellphones.

It is entirely optional.

zhoBEENG··on Everything You Do Is Being Recorded
Thank you, this deserved a link. I was being lazy.
zhoBEENG··on Everything you do is being recorded
Obama was promoting The Age of Surveillance Capitalism over seven years ago now. Industry insiders have known all this since 1999. Yet almost every single person I know carries a cellphone and drives a car with telemetry, things that are entirely optional. Most humans use Meta products regularly; also optional. For all the feigned outrage, people want this, and will work hard every day to pay for the next iteration of the surveillance apparatus.

PS: Something in this vein that many people are unaware of is that the 6G standard for cell towers is planned to include ISAC (Integrated Sensing and Communication). I haven’t heard a single AFK person talk about this.

zhoBEENG··on Smoking accessories are making a comeback
I also find couches quite decadent, when a similar effect can be gained by piling old rags in the corner.
zhoBEENG··on Civilians under siege by Mexican cartel fight back with AK-47s, grenades
You are completely correct. As much as many people don´t want to hear it, Mexico is a failing state. It´s extremely obvious when you are there that the United Mexican States lost most of the reins some time ago.

It started with the debt crisis, and its causes, but was definitively realized by 1994 when the Zapatistas took much of Chiapas.

Too much emphasis is put on the drug cartels alone, when the problem is much larger. I suspect by the end of the century maps will no longer show Mexico in its current form.

zhoBEENG··on Elevated errors on Claude Opus 5
Diffusion language models do this. I’d guess they are the future.
zhoBEENG··on China’s open-weights AI strategy is winning
Thanks for sharing the quote, it's really great. I believe he is correct, but I am not sure I yet agree with your assertion that we know that LLMs are more like alarm clocks than battleships.

I think they are more like watercraft in general. Some are small, and they have their uses. Some are big, and they have their uses. But it is the nation with the most aircraft carriers that is truly sovereign.

zhoBEENG··on US imposes new 50% tariffs on some Canadian products
If there is no international police, there is no international law.
zhoBEENG··on Majority of U.S..Majority of U.S. workers support an AI wealth fund
Madness. This is what the death of liberalism looks like.

edit:

Thinking about this shakes me. If this statistic is accurate, that the majority of Americans think we should be nationalizing private assets like this, then I no longer know what to think of my fellow citizens. Safety nets and regulation, and the taxes to run these systems and the necessary machinery of state--this I understand. But just taking 50% of a private company-- of every company in the industry? That is nothing but the ignoble reaction of a madding crowd.

Life, liberty, property. It is the sole purpose of government to protect these natural rights. That is the foundation of the ideology that freed us from slavery, and the majority of Americans have forgotten it.

zhoBEENG··on America Changed Me and Europe Was Wrong [video]
Everyone I know who has immigrated to America talks some version of this.
zhoBEENG··on Sperm donors need limits, says a European fertility group
The lines that have these issues will be dwarfed by the hundreds that don't. It's scattershot for sure, but if it gets to the point where the rate of inbreeding is statistically significant to the total success of his genetic material, then he has likely already "won" the genetic game.
zhoBEENG··on Sperm donors need limits, says a European fertility group
From an evolutionary fitness perspective, it makes sense as a kind of loophole for easily reproducing and distributing your genetic material in a way likely to lead to many successful family trees. This might actually be one of the best strategies.
zhoBEENG··on Safe from AI: which jobs will help you thrive in the future?
Small-scale, artisan production of goods/services that you personally hand to your local customer and that have strong, local, cultural value. If you're serious about future-proofing your career, do this. If possible, run your own business or work in a partnership where you have voting rights over the capital.
zhoBEENG··on Outcry as Meta lets users make AI images from public Instagram profile pics
He was 100% correct and continues to be so.
zhoBEENG··on How do wombats poop cubes? (2021)
If they die within 30 minutes, you would never see the scat of those who crack the seeds.
zhoBEENG··on AI is not going to make mathematicians obsolete
Intuitively, and based on my studies of economics, I believe that we will create new jobs or jobs will transform in some way as AI rolls out. That is, mathematicians would take on some new role in the math pipeline, as described in the article. But it’s not immediately clear to me what those jobs or roles might be.

However, when I zoom in on the question, I see that it distills down to this problem: Is there something a human brain can infer that a computer cannot infer? The answer to this seems much clearer and less optimistic for those tied to their jobs.

zhoBEENG··on Meta Posed as Teens to Prompt Rival Chatbots About Suicide, Sex, and Drugs
Yes, you’re right. I was just quickly lumping any contractor whose job is to run tests from a test case sheet under the QA umbrella. I guess a more likely title is Product Market Analyst, or something like that. But I was mostly stating that I don’t find this weird at all. I definitely have looked at competitor’s API’s, for example, when designing my own. I would find it weird not to.
zhoBEENG··on There's a Reason Women Aren't Swooning over AI Like Men Are
Close, but sadly Markov could not afford a car and Turing was more of a man’s man.
