zidad··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
Google is not a very viable alternative when you're trying to evade US sanctions
zidad··on Saving money on Google Photos with Immich: Your own personal photo storage
Why would it not be accessible to your family? Immich allows sharing links
zidad··on How a French judge was digitally cut off by the USA
It is not debatable. Palestine is a recognized member so according to the law they have jurisdiction. If these laws have any usefulness if no one will follow it is debatable though.
zidad··on How a French judge was digitally cut off by the USA
If only the US would apply those values to their foreign policy, unfortunately the US voters don't care enough about that.
zidad··on How a French judge was digitally cut off by the USA
The US has always been led by Thugs. If you think they ever took international or humanitarian law seriously they would not be scared to join the ICC, and you've only been paying attention to propaganda, not what the US has actually been doing since the inception of those laws.
zidad··on How a French judge was digitally cut off by the USA
Sure, but clearly that is not a requirement to be sanctioned nowadays, it just shows how f*d you are when you DO get sanctioned, and the bar for that is lowering by the day it seems.
zidad··on How a French judge was digitally cut off by the USA
Exactly! Same here. But man it's going to be a painful move, so much is coupled to that. I already have a GrapheneOS phone, which ironically has to be a Pixel to run it.

zidad··on After getting Jimmy Kimmel suspended, FCC chair threatens ABC's The View
who do you think is orchestrating this?
zidad··on What Was Quartz?

zidad··on It’s not mold, it’s calcium lactate (2018)
Fake as in, they're not allowed to call it "old cheese" because it's a protected term for cheese of a minimum age. But it might even be preferred by some because the texture is still a bit softer. I like it, but as with a good single malt, I wouldn't pay the same price if it's artificially aged.
zidad··on Things I Won't Work With: Dioxygen Difluoride (2010)
Found my next metal band name, thanks!
zidad··on The Egg (By Andy Weir)
Love it! I liked his other short stories as well: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35502775-the-egg-and-oth...
zidad··on A 10x Faster TypeScript
And the lesson is; don't build anything that needs to be performant in TypeScript because it's so slow?

zidad··on El Salvador abandons Bitcoin as legal tender
Does anyone know how/if using BTC as daily currency works in practice? Can El Salvadorians just add it to their Google Wallet?

I don't know much about cryptocurrencies but there seems to be a scaling issue, last thing I read it can only handle 7 transactions/s, is that still valid?

If so, then how would this scale to a country-wide payment system?

zidad··on NeuralSVG: An Implicit Representation for Text-to-Vector Generation
I always imagine how useful Sora.ai could be if it would generate 3D models to render their animations from instead
zidad··on My little sister's use of ChatGPT for homework is heartbreaking
Reminds me of the final outcome of the absurd series Mrs. Davis, where (spoiler warning) humanity has voluntarily succombed to the arbitrary assignments of a single AI-based customer rewards points app, because it was just a bit smarter than humans at manipulating people.
zidad··on General Electric HTRE-3 Nuclear Jet Engine
Sounds like a keeper. I don't see what could possibly go wrong with deploying these at scale everywhere.
zidad··on Ask HN: If you are starting in 2024, what is the most productive solo dev stack?
I know c# is not the coolest kid on the blcok, but my pick would be Blazor. Since it's all based on .net it's mature, performant, stable (finally, now with .net 8), long term support, great tooling and readily available strategies for testing, configuration, deployment, debugging etc.

And because I'm so tired of NPM/JavaScript (UI) frameworks reinventing themselves with new name every 6 months.

zidad··on Lockheed CEO Pitches Pentagon on Subscription Software
haha :) Feels more like an ultra-marathon sometimes

SAFe = "Agile" for managers who miss Waterfall projects
zidad··on Pixel 8 Pro
Battery life, screen quality, performance.. It has of course all this super annoying bloatware you can't remove but some of the extra features were actually quite good and I miss those now (close all apps, how to create screen recordings and screenshot, etc).

Yeah it was a forced by a US policy on a wider Huawei ban, which I think is more a "protect our companies" motivation.

zidad··on Pixel 8 Pro
I recently bought a Pixel 7 after my Huawei P30 pro broke.

The older Huawei model is so much better than the newer Pixel that it makes you think why they don't allow them to access the Play store anymore.

zidad··on Ask HN: I’m an FCC Commissioner proposing regulation of IoT security updates
I just remembered many old analog electrical ovens had this already , the only way to turn on the oven is by setting a timer (and when you needed it on for many hours you had to set another timer for yourself to remember to extend the oven timer ).
zidad··on I'm OK, the bull is dead (2004)
Definitely not the only one. What a cliffhanger. A punchline without the actual joke.
zidad··on Ask HN: What are the big/important problems to work on?
Aren't those devices called trees? They absorb CO2, store CO2 and water eco-friendly, reduce ground temperature, prevent erosion, create natural habitats for animals and can be used as construction materials. Governments: I'll send you my PayPal in a PM.
zidad··on A case for toe socks
I've bought a pair of toe socks some time ago and will definitely buy more.

I've also started to wear barefoot shoes with widened toes some years ago, and I can't go back to my 'normal' business shoes anymore, my feet start hurting within an hour because my toes positions started to be more parted.

Running with them is quite challenging though, the technique to land on the front of your feet required to minimize shocks on the knees and hips but a lot more strain on the calves.

zidad··on The Rust I wanted had no future
Unfortunately a lot of people will dismiss C# and F# just because it has the Microsoft label. I do think they're missing out.
zidad··on The Rust I wanted had no future
You could try C# (or Kotlin if you have a MS bias ;-)). Both really nice general purpose languages, quite performant despite having a GC and great available tooling.
