zinclozenge··on Ursa: A Leaderless, Object Storage–Based Alternative to Kafka
Having built a prototype of a system like Ursa myself, this isn't something that you need to use at all, especially because it seems like this is only available in S3 Express One Zone.
zinclozenge··on Show HN: Emdash – Slack/Zoom alternative for distributed team collaboration
If they're offering SSO using a 3rd party provider like Auth0 then they probably have to charge for it because of how expensive it is.
zinclozenge··on Holocron is an object storage based leader election library
I love this stuff. Seems like TektiteDB also has an implementation as well https://github.com/spirit-labs/tektite/tree/main/cluster
zinclozenge··on Launch HN: Stack Auth (YC S24) – An Open-Source Auth0/Clerk Alternative
Ah gotcha, that's a nice way of approaching it. Best of luck to you guys.
zinclozenge··on Launch HN: Stack Auth (YC S24) – An Open-Source Auth0/Clerk Alternative
Do you guys only offer SAML in your hosted SaaS?
zinclozenge··on Versioned finite-state machines with Postgres (2019)
Amazing! I also learned about domains with your comment.
zinclozenge··on Versioned finite-state machines with Postgres (2019)
I always wondered about this, a while ago I saw a library similar to this that modeled FSMs in Postgres, and had a comment saying "todo: cycle detection". And made me wonder if it's even possible to do this.
zinclozenge··on Show HN: Mesop – Open-source Python UI framework
I've seen a bunch of people recommending alternatives that are also Python based, makes me wonder if there's similar things for other languages like Go, Rust, etc
zinclozenge··on Python Cloudflare Workers
I'd be curious to see a direct performance comparison between their python and JS workers. Based on my own experience with pyodide, I'd wager there might be up to a 2x performance penalty.
zinclozenge··on Claude 3 surpasses GPT-4 on Chatbot Arena for the first time
This tends to be my experience, but mainly when it comes to areas that neither model know about. Claude 3 Opus will happily make something up, but ChatGPT4 will point out where it's lacking.
zinclozenge··on Garnet – A new remote cache-store from Microsoft Research
Can you point to any resources to read up on this?
zinclozenge··on Why is Maxwell's theory so hard to understand? (2007) [pdf]
Which is interesting considering Freeman Dyson was the guy that made the connection between Schwinger's and Feynman's QED.
zinclozenge··on Quicksort with Jenkins for fun and no profit
Since we're on the subject, is there a modern alternative to Jenkins?
zinclozenge··on Podman Desktop 1.6 released: Even more Kubernetes and Containers features
Are you talking about pods/deployments/etc or lower level abstractions like informers and things like that?
zinclozenge··on Ask HN: Any comprehensive courses on Auth?
I'm currently in the boat where I need to set up authentication (and eventually authorization) for a startup catering to big enterprises almost exclusively. I'd love to be recommended resources for setting up something like Keycloak or Auth0 (or anything else) for that use case.
zinclozenge··on IceCube – South Pole Neutrino Observatory
I learned how to program by working on a modest simulation for one of the PIs involved with IceCube. I ended up leaving academia but I really enjoy keeping up with the project over the years.
zinclozenge··on To YouTube: I'd gladly pay you if your website was de-bloated and fast like this
I specifically started paying for youtube premium because spotify just didn't have nearly as much of the music I listen to, and specifically the artists I listen to, and the youtube music app was good enough. The fact that I can watch youtube without ads is a nice little bonus.

For my purposes, youtube premium is 100% worth it.

zinclozenge··on ArgoCon – Vendor-neutral Argo-focused Event
Overpriced? Can't say I disagree with you, but Harness was by far the best CD solution I've ever used, and to this day I'm still waiting for an open source solution to replicate the experience, without needing to deploy resource hungry services.
zinclozenge··on Tech CEO sentenced to 5 years in IP address scheme
Some agencies, ones you might not even expect like the USPS and FDA, also have law enforcement powers, but have very narrow jurisdiction (relative to general law enforcement agencies like the FBI). So when a case actually does fall under their jurisdiction, they execute their duties "with extreme prejudice", so to speak. Assuming the story from the OP you replied to is true, the fact that they arrested the police officers would show how seriously they take their duties, even if the officers tampering with the mail was due to carelessness while they themselves were performing their duty.
zinclozenge··on Stream Compression in NATS
Yea, after reading the article I went and read the 2.10 release blog post and then came back and commented as if the article posted was the 2.10 post. That was my mistake.
zinclozenge··on Stream Compression in NATS
I was hoping the blog post would include a tentative roadmap for adding tiered storage.
zinclozenge··on CloudNativePG – Postgres Operator for Kubernetes
I've never used it myself, but while doing research I noticed that it received a lot of praise from users.

One thing that did catch my attention is that it doesn't use statefulsets for the postgres pods. I mostly agree with their reasons, but I haven't taken the time to understand their implementation.

zinclozenge··on The Uselessness of Phenylephrine (2022)
Oregon no longer requires a prescription since 2022.
zinclozenge··on Mojo is available for local download
Hard to say, as far as I can tell there's no networking libraries right now.
zinclozenge··on Killed by Google
This might have been a concern within the first few years of its life, but at this point Go has too much community inertia to get killed.
zinclozenge··on FDA approves first nonprescription daily oral contraceptive
The worst is that if you "OD" on tylenol, you won't die right away, but instead slowly and increasingly painfully over time, perfectly aware of what's going on.
zinclozenge··on 20x faster than pgvector: HNSW index in Postgres with pg_embedding
Yea, I mean basically there are a variety of techniques for encoding molecules as vectors. Morgan/circular fingerprints (cf https://darkomedin-datascience.medium.com/data-science-for-d... as a quick google search) are one way of encoding to bit vectors, and the Tanimoto similarity is a well validated measure of similarity (because of the bit vectors, cf https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_similarity).

Virtual screens of molecules frequently use steps to filter out molecules, one of which is via chemical similarity.

zinclozenge··on 20x faster than pgvector: HNSW index in Postgres with pg_embedding
Would be great to also add the ability to calculate the tanimoto coefficient for cheminformatics purposes.
zinclozenge··on EdgeNode: Deploy Serverless Containers on Edge
There’s a lot of edge compute services, but I’m still waiting for the Postgres equivalent of fauna or upstash.
zinclozenge··on Benzene Exposure Alters Endocrine Activity
When I was taking organic chemistry my (mid-to-late 60s at the time in ~20010) teacher told us an anecdote about benzene when we started learning about aromatic molecules. She told us that they used to clean their lab bench with benzene solvent to make it sparkling clean. Of course, she also told us it was carcinogenic and then finished by saying a lot of her contemporary colleagues that went into organic chemistry research were now dead. Really drives home that a lot of safety precautions and practices are "written in blood", so to speak.
