zodPod··on Online ID / age verification: the death of online search
More of governments who have no idea how technology works trying to solve technology problems.
zodPod··on 13-Year-Old Scientist's Research Shows Hand Dryers Can Hurt Kids' Ears
I mean, these things hurt MY ears too and I'm 30. I will frequently just dry my hands on my pants. She did a great job!
zodPod··on The Water Abundance XPrize winner makes water from air
I was going to say, I have a dehumidifier in my basement that I empty a gallon of water out of/day during the summer in Pennsylvania. I can't believe this kind of shit wins the xprize.
zodPod··on Thermometer Tells Your Temperature, Then Tells Firms Where to Advertise
Right?! I've always wondered that about this smart stuff. Like the smart water bottle that counts how many bottles of water you've had. Can't you just keep a tally? Like you said, this stuff is just bullshit that rich people buy when they have nothing better to do with their money.

I also really like your point about the data being skewed because of the price!

zodPod··on Thermometer Tells Your Temperature, Then Tells Firms Where to Advertise
I liked Brave New World better. I read it a few years ago and honestly it felt like it was just talking about present times.
zodPod··on Thermometer Tells Your Temperature, Then Tells Firms Where to Advertise
> in the novel, 1984 you didn't have a choice if you want a televisor in your home, or not.

This makes a lot of sense I recently heard a comparison between Orwell and Huxley that stated that they differed mostly on how they believed control would be taken.

In the case of Orwell, he believed that control could be punished into the population and that they'd comply for fear of being punished again. Though, Skinner had evidence that this wasn't really feasible.

In the case of Huxley, he believed that it could be rewarded into the population to the point where the population would crave it and seek it out.

Feels like Huxley had the right idea. People are paying really good money to buy these spy devices to put into their homes.

zodPod··on DRM for chargers? Google Pixel 3 locks fast Qi charging to its own stand
Na man I love the fact that I no longer have a headphone jack, my battery can't be replaced and goes bad in a year, my processor runs super beefy and drains my battery faster, but I can charge it wirelessly. Yeah I'm with you the new era of phones are just bullshit. It feels like they're running out of cool things to make them do and change about them so they're just doing stupid stuff to try to find something that accidentally works.
zodPod··on How to build your own neural network from scratch in Python
There's a guy who makes youtube videos like this a lot. He's a good guy and a smart guy but seems to either not care or not realize he isn't helping. I've seen videos like "Computer Vision In 5 lines" where the first line is "import helperclass.py" or something like that and that helper class has like 1500 lines of code that he wrote to implement. Sure people need to be aware of what they're learning but if someone has no programming experience and finds that video they're going to just think it's magic.
zodPod··on How blind players succeed at sports video games they’ve never seen
I'm shocked they didn't add this as DLC lol
zodPod··on Did I just waste 3 years?
Agreed! As long as it works well, who gives a damn what it looks like.
zodPod··on In Math Cram Sessions, Solving for Why
How much are your services? I'm an out-of-school adult that never really grasped math but hate that I don't know more about it to this day. Just wondering what kind of range I'd be looking in to just get some explanations or something. I don't currently have any specific questions though.
zodPod··on Show HN: Namegine – find a name for your startup or product
I love this. With the excessive use of dictionary words it's nice that there is now a way to search so that hopefully people will stop naming projects "Hydrogen" since there are 376 pages worth of results for it. lol
zodPod··on Researchers Unmask Anonymous Twitter Accounts With 97% Accuracy Using ML
I always kind of wondered if something like this (the way the title describes it not the way it actually went) wasn't theoretically possible using similarities in writing styles. Like I have several different accounts on some social media sites and make posts and comments on each one for different purposes. But I suspect that, if they were each analyzed based on how things were worded and word frequency and a few other things, they could at least be assumed to be linked together.
zodPod··on Ask HN: What is your favorite way of setting up online store in 2018?
Haha, I am. I think probably pretty low. But I thought maybe. I'm a programmer who does music as well so it could be! haha
zodPod··on How Instagram’s algorithm works
I was using that as a general population. You can be as proud as you want but it doesn't stop the general population from letting these services walk all over us.
zodPod··on Facebook made an AI that convincingly turns one style of music into another
I mean, to be fair, I probably wouldn't bang it.
zodPod··on Ask HN: What is your favorite way of setting up online store in 2018?
Are you actually e-40?
zodPod··on Ask HN: What is your favorite way of setting up online store in 2018?
Good. Sometimes people need to learn hard lessons. It's kind of nice to hear that she spent way too much money in the end. Hopefully her business takes off still but I get really tired of people asking for my advice and totally ignoring it.
zodPod··on Ask HN: What is your favorite way of setting up online store in 2018?
If he wanted full control like he says he'd just setup an apache server on a linux system and build his own store front. He clearly wants some help somewhere between no control and full control and Shopify can get him 80% of the way there.
zodPod··on Want More Time? Get Rid of the Easiest Way to Spend It
That's a really neat idea!
zodPod··on Facebook made an AI that convincingly turns one style of music into another
I mean... this mostly just feels like the originals were fed through some sort of vocoder... None of this is impressive at all to me. Translate orchestral output to hip hop or something and then I'll be impressed. At this point, you've fed one song in and output some kind of grainy sounding similar sound that is basically just triggering notes in a vocoder...
zodPod··on How Instagram’s algorithm works
But you get to experience their horrendous design! Isn't it great how the final paragraph is harder to read because the page removes the contrast? Or how, when you scroll a little too far, the old page disappears completely?
zodPod··on How Instagram’s algorithm works
They don't even seem to change. It's all just like a small group of "influencers" posting the same shit constantly. This is why social media is slowly making itself irrelevant. I just wish we humans had the self control to stop doing it once we realized it's not adding value.
zodPod··on Want More Time? Get Rid of the Easiest Way to Spend It
> There's very little else getting through to the News Feed anyway.

This. This whole "News Feed" idea, that the author touches on IG starting too, is just garbage. I want to see the most recent events first and scroll from there. You're not providing me any service by showing me random crap in any random order. All you're doing is giving yourself the ability to tailor what I see even more. Totally made Facebook worthless to me.

I used to scroll through it endlessly and since they started doing that shit I don't even bother anymore. I check notifications and close it, if I do anything.

zodPod··on Want More Time? Get Rid of the Easiest Way to Spend It
Right? It ended up being a bigger decision because I like getting notifications when someone does something related to me but I can't stand getting those generic notifications about other people's activities with other people. So I blocked the notifications by revoking the app's notification permissions. Sucks but they did it to themselves.
zodPod··on Want More Time? Get Rid of the Easiest Way to Spend It
Man. This really feels like I could've written it. Really good article I feel exactly the same. I've done exactly the same as well and come to the same conclusion. The note about facebook noticing you're gone and sending weird notifications is really what did it for me. Facebook lost all notification privileges after that and I haven't heard from it since. It's kind of nice!
zodPod··on Microsoft acquires Github
I'm really not sure here but I was under the impression that they had started doing the full screen detailing data collection thing after they had gotten caught doing it without it?
zodPod··on Digital Twin Example for Engineers
Exactly.
zodPod··on Game Boy Camera Canon EF Lens Mount
This is ridiculous and I love it.
zodPod··on Playing hard exploration games by watching YouTube
I can see where you're coming from, the title definitely made me initially feel like it was going to be about getting satisfaction from watching other people play a game or something like that.
