zoobab··on European RISC-V Industrial Computing Initiative
I would have loved to see a clause in the EU CHIPS Act to follow the principle of public money = public code for hardware.

We are financing private shareholders with public money.

zoobab··on Ten days later, Git on macOS still trusts the compromised eMudhra certificates
It has the davantage that you can finally find out what those apps are sending back home, including your private data.

The only thing that works is fines.
zoobab··on Git for the US Code
There are several alternatives, like for example a political party where 1000 random citizens are picked up for analyzing and voting on every file. Next file next 1000 batch of random citizens are picked.

We could also let people vote directly on their own laws without intermediaries.

"crypto contracts had the potential to replace much (although not all) of the bureaucracy around governments and justice systems"

It's a matter of time.

zoobab··on Git for the US Code
This is why I believe we should do something else than elections of politicians.
zoobab··on Git for the US Code
That was the same for the software patent directive, we had leaks of amendments proposed by big companies, we could see that Members of Parliament were just copy pasting them.

I am sure with LLMs the time to craft those tools to fetch the data and put them back in a git repo (for example one repo per legislative project) would not be too hard to do.

The authors are lobbyists of big corporations nowadays.

I proposed Git and Markdown instead of XML for EU law making in the European Parliament, they went with their own custom web editor to manupilate XML. And failed.
zoobab··on IBM CEO says open weight models are now good and cheap on-prem
Qwen 3.8 Flash with Strata here, the problem with Strata is that you cannot easily share the server as the performance will collapse outside of a single user.
zoobab··on EU Member States approve "digital expropriation" for AI companies
Insane.

Western firms started Body Shopping in the IT industry already in the 80s:

zoobab··on Docker is weird
When Docker came out, I was a heavy user of OpenVZ.

My bash build scripts looked like Dockerfiles.

Most of the container code in Linux came from those russian guys.

Took me 6 months to find out the difference between stateless and stateful containers, after Jerome Petazzoni published a blog post opposing the usage of an SSH server inside containers.

"There are plenty of Silicon Valley startups and tech companies that are equally cavalier about aspects of security and apply the mentality of "we'll fix it in post" to anything but shipping features."

Most companies handle security very badly.

You have little and big endians:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endianness

I had a bunch of openwrt routers based on the ADM5120 SoC, some of them were of different endianness, totally wth:

Do they accept invoices for patching their security flaws?

Are they liable?

zoobab··on DeepSeek just open-sourced its inference engine
Is it in Debian yet?
zoobab··on DeepSeek banned from U.S. federal civilian agencies under new DHS order
"Open weights" is just a binary blob you are allowed to copy.

The equivalent of a gratis non-open source app.

Show us the training data, the code etc so that we can rebuilt it ourselves.

zoobab··on One parser, two bugs, many routers: Exploiting Broadcom WiFi across eCos, Linux
"NB for anyone who isn't versed in legalese"

IMHO there should be jail time for Broadcom CEO.

Proximus took 2 years back in the bbox2 days to switch to an encrypted wifi.

It was possible at the time to get a root shell from the street, with the pppoe creds obfuscated in a config file.

Never trust ISPs with security.

zoobab··on Linux containers in 500 lines of code (2016)
I discovered proot-distro build yesterday, which does not require a special kernel with network and pid namespaces, it could run on older machines that do not have those features, or as a unix user that don't have those permissions.

Qualcomm is a patent troll, boycott.

Here in Europe, the Unified Patent Court just rubberstamped software patents with a smartwatch decision, saying adding a button makes the whole thing patentable, even though it's only software.

Like FFII.org predicted in 2006:

https://ffii.org/

"In July 2005, after several failed attempts to legalize software patents in Europe, the patent establishment changed its strategy. Instead of explicitly seeking to sanction the patentability of software, they are now seeking to create a central Unitary patent court (UPC), which would establish and enforce patentability rules in their favor, without any possibility of correction by competing courts or democratically elected legislators."

Not to mention the judges in that court are part time working for Nokia or Airbus.

zoobab··on Shimano Bicycle Museum Review
Also we have some partnership with a similar MTB museum in Arnhem (NL), definitely recommend paying them a visit, they have a big collection, I found the first Marin Madrone Trail 1986.

On my list for next time I go there, planning to bike the Eldridge Grade track with my Marin Eldridge Grade 1995 MTB.

zoobab··on Various Projects Find Hidden SDR Capabilities in ESP32 Microcontrollers
I created a new country Zooland where there are not RF regulations:

https://www.zoobab.com/zooland

For the same reason, those regulations (FCC radio lockdown etc) stifle innovation in the SDR world.

zoobab··on How the Bayh-Dole Act Transformed Tech Transfer
