Birth of a Nation is not considered best film of all time. It is considered one of the most racist films tho

In Film 101, Birth of a Nation gets deep analysis even though it’s basically kkk propaganda

From a technical perspective it really was considered a great movie for decades, It is, as you mention, extremely racist, and that eventually outweighed any merits of the film itself after the techniques it developed had long become routine.

Great movie from technical perspective and "greatest movie of all times" are two different claims tho. It is the same with Triumph of Will btw.

Being racist is part of that movie itself. It is not some kinf of separate thing. It is also part of its appeal and reason why some praise or recommend it.

The band VNV Nation had an amazing deconstruction of Triumph of Will going on in the background of their live shows... lo these many years ago I guess. I don't have the vocabulary to do it justice but it seemed like they'd removed in-group cues and replaced a sense of organized violence with organized effort.

For anyone curious about how you'd apply a literary tool to a different medium, check out The Chemical Brothers breaking down and then Rebuilding New Order's Temptation at a live show. Link should take you to the song 30min in.

I’ve never seen it but I have an inlaw that has the poster in the house. I’ve never mentioned it. Is it possible for people to like the movie without being a racist? Do some viewers not notice the racism?
