0942v8653··on Could a phone/computer display multiple profiles with just a different password?
I would guess that Android would be the easiest, since you can make your own lock screens and also root it. But I wouldn't know where to start.

There's no specific reason this shouldn't be possible, but it's simply not implemented in anything I know of.

0942v8653··on Ask HN: Cheap but decent quality Android smartphone?
Was just about to suggest the Moto G. A computer science class in high school (we paired up with a tech school) used these phones as a class set. Solid build, not too expensive, good stock experience, not-noticeably-bad performance.
0942v8653··on Ask HN: How many daily visits to HN?
I like how it drops down at the beginning of the year when people make new year's resolutions but then climbs right back up.
0942v8653··on Ask HN: Why does OS X Spotlight's calculator assert N/0 = N?
Apple's Spotlight calculators have had worse problems: http://i.imgur.com/UMYtIDi.jpg
0942v8653··on Apple has acquired Workflow, an automation tool for iPad and iPhone
I think they're trying to fight for the iPad Pro in some respect. Though they won't endorse programming on it, they will benefit from more automation systems on the iPad making it into a more viable alternative to the general purpose computer.
0942v8653··on Apple has acquired Workflow, an automation tool for iPad and iPhone
Mostly by URL scheme. Each app can provide any number of url schemes like workflow: or app-settings: or etc. Then they can use data from that URL or the clipboard.
0942v8653··on Onedrive is slow on Linux but fast with a “Windows” user-agent (2016)
But if it's not supported, they can't pass it on to the tech team; that would be against policy. Changing policy to make companies support unsupported software is a hard sell.
0942v8653··on Ask HN: Am I the only one who keeps returning Apple's EarPods?
I think I'm starting to see the same problem with a pair of mine. Once I started keeping track it hasn't happened again though…
0942v8653··on Ask HN: Am I the only one who keeps returning Apple's EarPods?
I have not found a pair of earbuds this comfortable with decent audio quality. I don't go replace them so often but they are nice earbuds.
0942v8653··on Why do popular sites not detect desktop browsers and redirect an m.* domain?
mbasic.facebook.com has been suggested for this use by several HN users.
0942v8653··on Ask HN: What's the most interesting URL you've seen?
http://money.get.away.get.a.good.job.with.more.pay.and.you.a...
0942v8653··on Ask HN: Do you use your name or a handle online for development?
Both. I'm pseudonymous on this account and have a real account for real name stuff. Generally if it's hacker news stuff or Pythonista community or another community where I signed up with this name, I'll contribute with this name. If it's more productive open source work, I'll use my real name. I try not to have direct links from this account to the other, but there are small hints left over, scattered around the web if anyone is curious (please email me if you find them!).

This name is kind of ridiculous and cumbersome, and is in fact designed to be a name you recognize but don't remember.

Unprofessional? Maybe. But the point of what I do on this account is to participate in these communities. Not to make real contributions or serious projects. Not to make things I would show off in a portfolio or something, and not to collaborate with my real life friends.

I'm wary of using the same name for every community. I have different names for different communities, and this helps me keep my "automated-collection digital footprint" pretty low for each name.

Stereotyping a dev community to use pseudonyms is not a bad thing at all. Sure, it's not strictly in our career interests, but it's good for peace of mind. I have some embarrassing comments on here from a year or two ago. That's ok. I was in high school then. I don't have to worry about it being associated with my real name by an employer -- if the employer puts in the effort to find data that connects my two names, then they've put in far too much effort and it seems they're likely to hire me anyway.

There's something to be said for altruistic contributions that don't necessarily keep your own career interests in mind.

I too am interested in seeing what the non-dev audience has to say. I think they may have the same privacy concerns.

0942v8653··on Ask HN: Cheap, hackable e-reader?
I'm currently looking at a simple 7th-gen Kindle. ( https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Kindle-6-Inch-Previous-Generat... ), for $35. I've done some research, and it seems that it is possible to jailbreak it, but I would like to be sure I can really write software for it before I buy.
0942v8653··on Why I switched from OS X to Linux
You can use Wine perfectly well on Mac, as far as I'm aware. I have used PlayOnMac (a wrapper of Wine) for Artemis Bridge Simulator and it works great. Though Wine is used more often on Linux, I think, so it may be more stable.
0942v8653··on Gitea – A community-managed fork of Gogs
What did gitea contribute the last time they merged?
0942v8653··on Update on Multi-Process Firefox
If you set browser.showQuitWarning to true (also make sure browser.warnOnQuit is true; that should be default) it will show a dialog to confirm if you want to quit. But if you check the box "do not show next time" it will set browser.showQuitWarning to false.
0942v8653··on Dropbox kills grandfathered Public/ folders
Additionally you can use git.io to shorten any github.io or github.com link. It's not available on the website but their API also allows you to choose your own pronounceable name. Most names you could want are still available.
0942v8653··on Visual Studio Code 1.8
Vim doesn't either. You have to use third party plugins.
0942v8653··on First ‘water-wave’ laser created
For whatever reason, their CSS overrides the vertical-align of a large number of elements (possibly all of them?) to "vertical-align: baseline;". Odd, to say the least.
0942v8653··on How Discord handles over a million requests per minute with Elixir’s GenStage
Aggregated or Non-identifiable Data: We may also share aggregated or non-personally identifiable information with our partners or others for business purposes.
0942v8653··on Run Unix processes inside your browser
The website to MSYS2 was blocked by my high school's firewall. I think Cygwin used Sourceforge, which was arbitrarily filtered for badware risk. There were other ways of fixing that, but my point is… it'a good to have alternatives, and the browser ensures good portability.
0942v8653··on How leaving a corporate job to join a startup fucked me up and sorted my life

0942v8653··on Start building Actions on Google
I think "[keyword]" is meant as a placeholder for either "Alexa" or "Hey Google".
0942v8653··on How the number zero was ‘discovered’
They were using Roman numerals. It's true that with Roman numerals and writing out the number using words, it's harder to forge. See https://m.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/49z4d6/why_did...
0942v8653··on Where are the Voyagers?
Um, what about Voyager 6? I'm worried...
0942v8653··on Ask HN: Simulating USB Mass Storage Over WiFi
I don't think the RPI 0 would work; last time I tried this, it wasn't able to work as both a USB client and host, and the only way to get it to do wifi is with a USB wifi adapter.
0942v8653··on Go fonts
I think these are made in preparation for high-DPI screens.

The serifs are short enough that I couldn't see them all on my regular screen (particularly the right-hand serif on the lowercase 'w'). But on my phone I would be able to see it perfectly well. On a high-DPI screen, the text isn't blurry or anything. They didn't focus on the rendering at all it seems, but made their screenshots in high resolution.

Does that mean you can use it on the virtual terminal screens? If so, that's pretty cool.

0942v8653··on Tell HN: Let's get back to HACKER news
There are no Trump stories on the front page, and I remember a total of 3 (the first two were the same but split to avoid server issues...). This and one other one is on the Ask page. That's reasonable, I think, for such a major event.
