2019ideas··on Apple makes billions from Google Search each year
The most obvious and not controversial- Home screen on the iphone vs a home screen on Android.
2019ideas··on Google warns about two iOS zero-days 'exploited in the wild'
I consider all of these likely-

>FBI found someone inside they could negotiate with(IE- better patents or the threat of denied patents)

>FBI found someone they could bribe

>FBI hacked and broke into the iphone

3/3 of those Apple wants to keep quiet.

2019ideas··on Apple makes billions from Google Search each year
This is the biggest benefit of Apple users.
2019ideas··on Blockchain and Trust
I like Bitcoin, I don't see a use for any other coin. Decentralized verification seems to be valuable in Currency only.

Timestamps and voting do not seem to be valuable, this was the craze over alt coins.

2019ideas··on Wondering about the link between intelligence and meaning
>when you value things that are based on things outside your control e.g. social validation, financial success, you will struggle to be happy.

These are outside our control? I found both were achieved by choosing to be an engineer and going above and beyond.

2019ideas··on Google and Facebook should be regulated for news content, UK government report
Warning,

When Medical got regulated in the U.S. the prices skyrocketed, and customer care stagnated. The regulators were incentivized to create a monopoly by the entrenched medical professionals.

Now people are asking for more regulations. Is that the solution?

2019ideas··on Google and Facebook should be regulated for news content, UK government report
>the government will helpfully tell them what to correct.

>the government

There is no 'the government'.

The government is an entity of elected and unelected people. They have their own bias, their own friends, their own wants.

I have stopped using Facebook because it sucks, but if the government sucks, I am forced to use them.

2019ideas··on Ironies of Automation (1983) [pdf]
Higher standards of living. Less starvation, better environment, etc...
2019ideas··on Mars One, which offered 1-way trips to Mars, declared bankrupt
>My friend "applied," knowing full well it was a scam.

Knew it was a scam and did it anyway?

These are the people that need to have conversations with economists.

2019ideas··on Ironies of Automation (1983) [pdf]
>Complete win for who exactly ?

The sweat shop workers, the company, the customers.

Sweat shop workers are losing their ability to do mindless labor, next up, they will be using their brains to make low skill decisions where automation cannot. Think Amazon Turk.

Customers get lower cost, likely higher quality products.

Company gets more reliable workforce.

>It's all fun and games until you have to take into consideration the soci-economical aspect of automation.

This has already happened in history. You COULD make it illegal, but then your countries technology will be out performed by another country.

---

Its easy to disagree, its harder to come up with your own solutions.

2019ideas··on Show HN: Open source balloon simulation with Three.js
My buddy is developing a fireworks Sim in js + embedded systems to coordinate with a fireworks show.

The embedded work is basically done, but he was considering using JS and three.js, any suggestions/advice?

2019ideas··on Russia considers 'unplugging' from internet
>This seems like a very logical test for all countries to carry out.

Who is 'countries'? The president? The deep state?

I am not sure I want anyone but a group of decentralized nerds in control of this. And that control be optional.

2019ideas··on What It’s Like to Work Inside Apple’s ‘Black Site’
>Does the big tech company bear no responsibility for shifting as much work as it can out to subcontractors in order to cut costs?

> spit them out as burned-out husks with no savings at the age of 35, hey, that's the system we live in.

This sounds really bad until you look at the happy contractors making over 6 figures, and are on track to retire in their 30s.

Everyone likes to complain, everyone wants more money. If you are making 6 figs and can't retire by 40, that was a personal decision.

2019ideas··on Ways to think about market size (2015)
If economics are irrational because humans are irrational. Apple is the primary argument that humans are irrational.

Forming logical conclusions on anything Apple does is dangerous. They overcharge and under deliver(at least on Hardware). They are primarily marketing, not tech.

For this same reason, their valuation is irrational. I don't expect Apple to be above 500M for much longer than a few years.

2019ideas··on Jeff Bezos Turned Narrative into Amazon's Competitive Advantage
This is how I found I was importing the wrong file after 1 week of working on it...

I was using Welcome.js instead of Home.js

I was happy, kinda. But also, wondering if I solved the issue earlier in the week.

2019ideas··on Basic income in Finland did not lead to finding work, researchers said
>That would be solved by ai/automation

Lots of these topics have different outcomes when you start to assume sci-fi tech. I won't argue about what life should be like when we build fusion reactors or figure out nuclear 3D printing.

2019ideas··on Basic income in Finland did not lead to finding work, researchers said
>given UBI, anything an individual may do would be his or her own prerogative and therefore represent higher quality output.

But having fun making art means little to an economy.

Having less fun designing a robot to pick potatoes will transform an economy.

Creativity is nice, but it doesn't directly correlate with additional value.

2019ideas··on Basic income in Finland did not lead to finding work, researchers said
> Its called a life, and work is not the goal of it.

This type of thinking needs to stop.

You don't get to enjoy our lavish society without contributing.

If you want food and a shack, you can already live this lifestyle for less than 5k/yr.

Hanging out with your family, playing sports, and helping animals will not keep an economy moving.

2019ideas··on Basic income in Finland did not lead to finding work, researchers said
I can't disagree with this.

Unless I am inspired, I will not work for free.

I imagine the opposite would be true for myself, and I consider myself a hard worker.

2019ideas··on Basic income in Finland did not lead to finding work, researchers said
This is bad economics.

Jobs are literally necessary for our society to function.

If everyone was jobless but 'happy', they wouldn't be happy when the food runs out. Or houses start to get old. Or iphones stop being built and websites are taken offline.

Economics are more important than a single individuals happiness, its our survival.

EDIT: Don't shoot the messenger. Fun ideas are not reality.

2019ideas··on Where does a tip to an Amazon driver go? Sometimes, toward the driver's base pay
Not tipping sounds great until you order food in Europe.

That said, I've heard good things about Japan's food service, and they don't require tipping.

EDIT spelling

2019ideas··on Crunching 200 years of stock, bond, currency and commodity data
Mind if I ask a poll question- Do you believe 'markets grow at 7-13%/yr, over 10 years'

I've been taught this like its a fact.

2019ideas··on Human psychology and behavioral studies overlook 85 percent of people
Causes of the replication crisis puts 0 blame on academia. This is an Academia caused crisis.
2019ideas··on Sweden's leave of absence system helps workers launch their own business
>you are forced to sign clauses that gives your employer full ownership of anything you invent ever while employed

You know, you don't have to sign those.

I always cross out those and tell them to send it back when its fixed. Only my first job I was afraid to do this.

2019ideas··on Sweden's leave of absence system helps workers launch their own business
>This is what a strong economy actually looks like.

No mention of wages and jobs.

In Electrical Engineering(US), its vicious the amount of competition trying to get me.

Vacation policy? Unpaid, but at 60$/hr, I just afford to take 3 weeks of vacation, but 2 weeks of holidays too.

2019ideas··on America Lets Too Much Young Talent Go to Waste
> I didn't have any interest in history in HS.

I blame your teachers.

2019ideas··on Roger McNamee says the 'like' button was 'beginning of the end'
Millions of followers mean you have more influence. (like it or not)

Some people want to release products and not pay for advertising, some people want to watch football.

2019ideas··on America Lets Too Much Young Talent Go to Waste
Looking back at my education,

Precalc and English were me 2 most useful classes.

"Science" "engineering" and "history" were actually useless. If you were going to get further education, college science eclipses HS science in 1 semester. My Engineering class was the most absurd, it wasn't engineering. History was basically propaganda.

High school needs to end sooner. AP classes are the sign of this.

2019ideas··on What Happened to the 100000 Hour LED Bulbs?
Yeah the G9s we bought had nothing labeled. Going to give amazon a try.
2019ideas··on What Happened to the 100000 Hour LED Bulbs?
I bought some G9 bulbs, and they are not performing like the halogens... It doesn't give me the full RGB like halogens and my house looks pale white(lacks red) instead of full color.

I might go back, I do not like the look of my house, and I find myself turning on my living room lights AND dining room lights. The brightness wasn't there.

There is massive improvement to be made on LEDs still.
