2muchcoffeeman··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
Spoken like someone who’s not tried to buy any computer anywhere in the last year.

All the pricing is bad everywhere.

2muchcoffeeman··on It's still ok to enjoy programming
So? It’s for your own fun. Who cares if another tool exists? Multiple things that do the same thing exist everywhere.
2muchcoffeeman··on Apple routed a graphite pipe through the iPhone Duo's hinge to dissipate heat
Apple used to have maintenance releases. They used to be known for their taste.

They should absolutely cop the criticism. It’s not like they don’t have the resources to make their software better.

All health professionals are hit or miss. Just like every other profession. You have to shop around and get 2nd opinions.

When you find a good provider it’s a real pain to have switch.

I’m in Australia though. Switching is cheap and easy.

Sure, we need redundancies and checks and balances in the system. You can’t trust everyone.

It’s not as though people who cheat the system aren’t reported or found out. Academics that lie in their research and companies that use loop holes are found out all the time. Maybe there is no will in some countries to do anything about it, but they are found out.

Which is why it’s not just up to a drug company to self approve itself.
2muchcoffeeman··on Terence Tao: Math 2.0 [pdf]
I think his last point is important

* Could the AI solution be somehow misaligned by exploiting a weakness in the trial process or its math models?*

Maybe it’s a clumsy example but I think the difference is humans would follow the spirit of the trial process.

Could an AI find flaws in the process and then use them to get its drug passed? I think that’s the question.

Are you saying that the trail process is good enough that we shouldn’t worry about it?

2muchcoffeeman··on US imposes sanctions on ICC hours after former judge wins Nobel Peace Prize
I have heard the analysis by political pundits and I agree with it in context, but it’s still incredibly insane.

We basically cannot trust America anymore since its people have, as a whole, have lost the ability to reason and think critically. And the people in power want it that way. They prefer do disenfranchise most of their population so they can win elections using their core base who will believe anything.

2muchcoffeeman··on Turn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and get its disk space back
Fair point. It was OEMs. But that’s normally how you got windows. I don’t use windows much these days so I have no idea what the modern annoyances are.
2muchcoffeeman··on Turn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and get its disk space back
I’m not saying it’s not feasible. See Windows. The effort that Microsoft put into backwards compatibility was incredible. But it’s also questionable.

Even a good emulator might fix bugs that some piece of software relied on.

It’s certainly a shame if they got rid of Rosetta forever so hopefully it’s still available as an optional download.

2muchcoffeeman··on "No Vendor Lock-In" Is Code for "No Product"
And within what I can afford or what I want to spend, I think it’s useful to use different models for different tasks.

So I want a harness that I can use with multiple models.

2muchcoffeeman··on So you think you could be an electrician?
Is not capability to pay though. Sometimes you have no control on who you hire or you just have no experience and make a bad choice.
2muchcoffeeman··on Turn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and get its disk space back
I’m not making any judgement on whether you should or should not like the feature.

I’m stating that the Windows problem was very different. Your machine would be loaded up with software for various vendors that the manufacturer did deals with to lower the price of the machine. They were all trials.

2muchcoffeeman··on Turn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and get its disk space back
The alternative is maintaining backwards compatibility forever and then everyone will complain about some weird behaviour that still happens to retain that compatibility.

Keep in mind this is the second time they have switched arches and the second round of complaints of Rosetta removal.

2muchcoffeeman··on Turn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and get its disk space back
On windows you got garbage like trial versions of Blah software.

This is a fully functioning feature that people don’t like for what ever reason.

2muchcoffeeman··on So you think you could be an electrician?
>* I’ve worked trades. I loved a lot about it! But I’m so glad this article pointed out the range of status: not all trades, or roles within one are equal. If you are an incredible welder who can run a perfect seam every time you can command a huge salary. For the rest of the welders it is quite different. If you can handle customers and a crew you can run a quite lucrative electrician shop, for the rest of construction it is quite different. Repeat.*

This is quite obviously true whenever you hire trades people. I had a guy just cut into a pipe behind some dry wall. I’m uncertain how after looking at hole and the pipe.

I remain convinced that anyone enterprising could build a very lucrative trades business simply because so many trades people are bad.

2muchcoffeeman··on Treachery in the Rodin Museum 3D scan verdict
Did the post actually justify anything? Reads like a list of things that make simplification of laws hard.

And if you can’t sympathise with any of those cases, I hope you’re never called upon to decide anything involving other people.

2muchcoffeeman··on 56k.rip – the 1996 dial-up internet experience
56k modems is an application of Shannon’s Theorem.

2muchcoffeeman··on Singapore govt dating app uses Gale-Shapley stable marriage algorithm
You’re absolutely right. I’m on my phone trying to imagine the scenarios in my head and trying to find the simplest possible example.

Maybe 4 participants is too few to clearly see what happens.

2muchcoffeeman··on Singapore govt dating app uses Gale-Shapley stable marriage algorithm
Imagine you are the proposer. You will start at the top of your list and work your way down only if rejected. So you are guaranteed to the best you could possibly do.

Imagine A ranks X,Y,Z in that order B ranks Y,X,Z in that order C ranks X,Y,Z

X, Y, Z rank A,B,C in that order.

A will propose to X and match. B will propose to Y and match. C will propose to X and get rejected. C will propose to Y and get rejected. C will propose to Z and match.

Y will never get a proposal from A. Z will never get a proposal from A or B.

Edit: I think I fixed it.

2muchcoffeeman··on Singapore govt dating app uses Gale-Shapley stable marriage algorithm
Gale-Shapely provides the best possible stable outcome for the proposing side.

You’re never going to match with people who aren’t actively looking.

You’re only ever going to match with the people who are looking at the same time as you.

Your criticisms are true of real life without apps. That’s why we have this thing called “divorce”.

Comments like these always seem to miss the point. They aren’t trying to solve marriage. They are trying to create social lubricants to get young people more interested in dating. This algorithm tries to ensure that at the very least your core values at the time match up.

2muchcoffeeman··on Show HN: Reladraw – A diagram language where you decide where to place things
D2 has some support for this. You can fix the position of certain elements and then it will redraw things around it.

I’ve been thinking about something similar to this but D2 wasn’t totally open source until now.

2muchcoffeeman··on The Board Game of the Alpha Nerds (2014)
This is a reflection of those people.

My core group will backstab each other gleefully and when the game is over, that’s it. We’re done. Because none of this is real. We wouldn’t even help each other if we played with other people. We’re all trying to win.

Although I suppose you’re right. If I played with two people, and the role of one of them is simply to help the others game, I’d never play with them.

2muchcoffeeman··on The Board Game of the Alpha Nerds (2014)
People like what they like.

But when you play a game and it turns out you don’t like it, you need to do your best not to bring it down for everyone. I don’t even mean you can’t criticise the game. Go for it. But find ways to have fun. I like thinking up outlandish strategies and trying to make it work.

No one needs 2 plus hours of their lives ruined because someone threw a hissy fit over a game which has no real life consequences. It’s probably not healthy if you can’t distinguish fact from fiction either.
