333c··on Dependabot version updates introduce default package cooldown
I feel the same. So so so many "regular expression denial-of-service" issues at my last job that just didn't seem serious or often reachable.
333c··on Chess invariants
I was replying to a comment quoting an official rule saying "no piece can be moved if that exposes or leaves its own king in check."

I was pointing out that that specific rule (read to mean that moving a piece pinned against a king is not allow) is not strictly necessary. Putting oneself in check is not allowed regardless of whether it's because you moved a piece that was pinned against your king or moved your king directly into the line of sight of an opponent's piece. These are the different "means."

As a sibling comment points out, "The only action you can ever take in chess is moving," so it's not particularly meaningful to say that the only way to put yourself in check is by moving.

333c··on Chess invariants
Did you mean putting your opponent in check? In chess, you are not allowed to put yourself in check.
333c··on Chess invariants
That's a consequence of not being allowed to put yourself in check (by any means).

333c··on Ask HN: Weird archive.today behavior?
Sometimes HN admins revive quality posts that didn't get much traction when they were first posted. When this happens, the timestamps are updated to make the post look new.

I can't say for sure whether this is what happened here, but it is a possible explanation.

The dependency has just come out of the oven, so it's too hot and must cool down ;)
333c··on Why I code as a CTO
I would say that's the job of a CTO
333c··on Apple M5 chip
The MacBook Pro has had a 120 Hz screen for nearly half a decade. And of course, external displays can support whatever resolution/refresh rate, regardless of the OS driving them.
333c··on FCC Accidentally Leaked iPhone Schematics
Actually this Reddit post predates that "original source" by several hours: https://old.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/1ntc1gt/the_fcc_has_...
333c··on It's a DE9, not a DB9 (but we know what you mean)
Not connector related, but I can't tell you how many people use time zones like PST year-round. The ST stands for "standard time," meaning not Daylight Saving Time. Right now, PDT would be appropriate.

The thing that kills me is that they could just say "PT" or "Pacific time" and be right, with less effort.

I always know what they mean, but it's wrong for more than half the year.

333c··on Breaking Up with Long Tasks or: how I learned to group loops and wield the yield
I think your explanation of async, while true, doesn't get at what's special about async. The explanation seems true of (non-parallel) concurrency as well (for example, thread scheduling on a one-core CPU).
333c··on No GPS required: our app can now locate underground trains
I used this feature in the New York subway last week. I didn't know it was new. It's a cool idea, but it didn't work for me. The app said that the train was several stops behind its actual location.
333c··on Adding syntax to the CPython interpreter
In Ruby, the `if [condition]` modifier at the end of a line is used for more cases than just assignment. For example, `return if s.blank?` and `raise "invalid" if input.length > 100`. In Ruby, this pattern makes it clear that the statement is only executed if the condition is met.

I'm not advocating for this feature to be added to Python, just explaining why it's not confusing in Ruby.

333c··on Adding syntax to the CPython interpreter
Yeah, it would be confusing. In Ruby, this would leave spam unmodified.
333c··on Can you get root with only a cigarette lighter?
The motivation in the introduction is rooting/jailbreaking a handheld game console. I think this is a perfectly plausible situation where you have physical access but still want to obtain "unauthorized" access.
333c··on AeroSpace is an i3-like tiling window manager for macOS
I started using this at work about a week ago. Still getting used to it, but it feels nice for managing multiple displays. Sometimes it feels limiting, but I think I'm just getting used to it.
