7174n6··on Activists across Europe prepare two days of protests against datacentres
If America and Europe don't build data centers...China wins. Right?
7174n6··on Learning to live with Waymos
I used Waymo several times while in Nashville this summer. Fantastic experience. I'll choose Waymo over a human-driven vehicle everytime I have the choice.
7174n6··on I'm in a Meeting
Awesome, if I worked in the UK.
7174n6··on French Youth Take the Streets Against a Bleak Future
I only know what I see in reporting, but if they are protesting poor conditions in the schools and budget cuts for education, then why are they literally burning the school buildings? That seems terribly counterproductive.
7174n6··on Touchscreen MacBook '100% Confirmed,' Says Reputable Leaker
so, an iPad Pro with a keyboard then.
7174n6··on Iran-linked hackers have breached FBI director's personal emails
The leak is from 2011-2022. He wasn't in the government then!!!!
7174n6··on Iran-linked hackers claim breach of FBI director's personal email
I'm sure it will be embarrassing for him personally, but not a breach of U.S. government systems.

Kudos to CNN for publishing a balanced take on it.

7174n6··on Show HN: Glyph, a local-first Markdown notes app for macOS built with Rust
This looks nice, but there is nothing that explains why I should invest in it over any of the other dozen note-taking apps that support markdown. Why should I pay for this rather than stay with Obsidian? I'm not hating on this tool, I'm advising the developer they need to be more aggressive in convincing me it's worth the investment in money and time to make the switch.
7174n6··on How to Leave the U.S.A.
Good, leave. Thank You.

And I'm not saying this as a partisan, on either side.

Fleeing is the coward's way out. Stay and fight for what you believe in.

You don't get to come back and dictate that the rest of us placate to your beliefs and feelings after you fled and didn't invest any sweat equity to fix the problem.

7174n6··on Revelations about an FBI's unit fightning against cybercrime
translation anyone?
7174n6··on Tell HN: My advice after I applied to 450 positions before getting hired
Your spray and pray technique is flooding HR departments with AI generated applications. This blocks out people who are actually qualified for the role as they get drowned out by the "shameless" who apply for anything that "vaguely fits".

This is horrible advice and exactly why the job market is so broken.

7174n6··on Florida lawmaker floats ban on HOAs amid growing backlash
This is a huge problem in Pennsylvania also, but most of the municipalities have abdicated significant maintenance responsibilities to HOAs. They refuse to take over roads, retention ponds, and common land areas requiring the HOA to cover maintenance. Snow removal from "public" roads and landscaping of "common areas" is a significant cost for HOAs. If the municipalitiies are forced to take these dutues over it's going to be a huge hit to their budgets. I'd think this would be a hard sell to most politicians in PA.
7174n6··on Curbing sugar won't curb your sweet tooth, scientists say
I like science.
7174n6··on Sans and GIAC Certification Fraud: A Case Study
I have completed three SANS courses and hold two GIAC certifications. Yes, they are unreasonably expensive. But you know that going in.

But I have no idea what this guy is talking about otherwise. He repeatedly claims "content misalignment" and "exam misrepresentation". The courses I have completed were wholly aligned with real-world application. And as far as the exams...they are open books and open notes. And you get practice exams that provide a pretty nice roadmap of the actual test.

7174n6··on Browsers in Direct Comparison
Funny they didn't include Brave.
7174n6··on What is a pig butchering scam? (2023)
This place is ridiculous. How do I get downvoted for trying to help the victim from being stigmatized? The term is horrible, and there is no legitimate reason to use it.
7174n6··on What is a pig butchering scam? (2023)
There is a move to rename the crime to "financial grooming" because the term "pig butchering" is an intentional form of victim shaming. Anyone who is still using the term pig butchering should be immediately discredited.
7174n6··on College student put on academic probation for using Grammarly: 'AI violation'
Long time adjunct instructor here - it's pretty easy to tell when a student is writing above their level or not within their tone and style. A lot of times, I can tell the work is not the students; maybe not AI-created, but definitely created by someone else.

I'd like to see the actual paper. Turning a student in for plagiarism is a serious action and not taken lightly. I think the instructor had other clues besides machine alerts.

7174n6··on [dead]
"Notably, male rats exhibited pronounced autism-like behaviors, characterized by a marked reduction in social interaction and repetitive patterns of behavior. Furthermore, there was a substantial decrease in neuronal counts in critical brain regions, indicating potential neurodegeneration or altered neurodevelopment. Male rats also demonstrated impaired motor performance, evidenced by reduced coordination and agility."

Scary.

7174n6··on [dead]
Masking isn't about health...its about control.
7174n6··on CNN is blocking the Brave Browser
Nothing worth seeing there anyways.
7174n6··on Ask HN: What are some interesting/useful things that you purchased this year?
I use both Notability and Apple Notes. I tried Good Notes and Notability just worked better for me. Even though it cost more.
7174n6··on Ask HN: What are some interesting/useful things that you purchased this year?
I'm a note taker and I got tired of having hand written notes scattered all over and never being able to find the note I needed. So took a leap and purchased an iPad Air and an Apple Pencil 2. I carry it with me and make all my notes there. I use it way more than I ever imagined. I use the Paperlike screen protector to make it feel more like writing on a notebook. And it has all the added benefits of an iPad.
7174n6··on We have more to fear from stupid people than evil ones
There is a fine line between stupidity and enlightenment. The problem with this theory is determining who is the stupid, who is the enlightened, and who are the evil.

Trump voters think Biden supporters are stupid and being manipulated by evil. Biden voters think the same about Trump supporters! Arguments can be made for both sides and backed by data, both scientific and anecdotal.

Only time and history reveal the truth. It's really hard to determine in real time. Those that felt the earth was round were viewed and stupid and guided by evil at one point in histotry.

7174n6··on Inside Ohio State’s DEI Factory
anyone have a link that climbs the paywall?
7174n6··on Evernote Lays Off Most of Staff, Triggering Fears of Closure – Slashdot
Those posts are from July. Evernote still exists. Although I wouldn't suggest anyone use it.
7174n6··on Ask HN: Is your M1 Battery draining significantly faster in last week?
Not in the last week, but I've had to stop using Apple Notes because it absolutely eats battery. Use Activity Monitor to check energy usage and I bet Notes is your culprit.
7174n6··on Cellebrite asks cops to keep its technology secret
The vast majority of these exams are done under the authority of a search warrant issued by a valid court. The police have the authority to access the data on the device...their method of doing it is not really relevant. One of the reasons that companies like Cellebrite of Greyshift are so secretive with their exploits is because as soon as Apple or Google get a grasp of how they are bypassing security mechanisms, they push an update to block it. It's a constant cat and mouse game.
7174n6··on Show HN: DomainHacks – no more boring .coms
Perfect for phishing and domain spoofing attacks.
7174n6··on Understanding Cybersecurity Frameworks: NIST, ISO, and More
Being compliant within any of those frameworks does not make an organization secure. It's a good place to start, and will make the auditors happy, but assuming that (compliance equals secure) is a huge mistake.
