If you are looking for a solid Full-stack founding engineer to bring a SaaS/Platform project to the real world beyond the MVP, I do the 0 to 1 work. I can work solo collaborating with founders and product/marketing people, or within a team of highly effective mission-driven engineers.

AKifer··on M3O – An open source AWS alternative
This is apparently the trend right now, and these utilities are already there. What's still hard to do is the "glue" that connects the infrastructure/scaling side with the building blocks: that's "still" developers/devops work. Maybe a vertical approach will likely work in practice: like having a platform that allows idea to app in 1 week or less with minimal human intervention (authentication/signup, authorization/permissions/credentials, marketing automation and analytics, billing, email collect, static pages templates, CRM, media storage and delivery, infrastructure and scaling) in a specific domain, let's say for example in the edtech space.

But this might find a fertile ground at those proponents of an universal basic income. So anyone doing exercise "good" for his/her health will be rewarded, perhaps the intrinsic value here is the saved indirect cost of healthcare.
AKifer··on US Hospitals say feds are seizing masks and other coronavirus supplies
Just yesterday, reading these lines in Atlas Shrugged: ... said Scudder. "When the masses are destitute and yet there are good available, its idiotic to expect people to be stopped by some scrap of paper called a property deed. property rights are a superstition. One holds property only by the courtesy of those who do not seize it. The people can seize it at any moment. If they can, why shouldn't they ?" "They should" said Claude Slagenhop. "They need it. Need is the only consideration. If people are in need, we've got to seize things first and talk about it afterwards."

And that was written 2/3 a century ago.

The soviets also thought the same, unfortunatelly a system with bad actors cannot be solved from within. Especially when the "bad" actors controls means of production and distribution, and have incentives to continue acting such and in return creating incentives for "good" actors to imitate the "bad" behaviours. Anyway, defining what's good and what's bad when you are an actor within a system is a very subjective exercice, a seemingly "good" actor will turn "bad" overnight given the right incentive and vice versa. The real question is determining who distributes the incentives, and who should. And for all the systems in this world, it spans from random to being concentrated in the hands of a few oligarchs or a single dictator.

That same old war, even today.

Did anyone try introduce an animal in such a closed system, insects for instance. Does it self sustain ?
AKifer··on Boeing 737: Australia joins Singapore in barring Max planes
Just like for VW, all this story will end up by top Boeing management saying "It's the fault of [sofware] engineers".
AKifer··on A Tiny Screw Shows Why iPhones Won’t Be ‘Assembled in U.S.A.’
Can some top notch hardware be made in USA ? For sure. Did someone made a top notch hardware, even some prototypes ? Please tell us who. Perhaps the real issue is that nobody is excited to make hardware anymore in the US as westerners expect to retain ownership of the working capital in the Chinese industry, which is getting less and less relevant when China is getting richer and richer. The western world needs a mental leap as Tesla did with the car industry if it wants to keep up with China in this ground.
AKifer··on C.I.A. Concludes That Saudi Crown Prince Ordered Khashoggi Killed
Given the link between the US and the KSA, from a pure analyst view, if the CIA is giving away conclusion like that publicly, it's highly probable that something is brewing and under preparation somewhere.
AKifer··on Botched CIA Communications System Helped Blow Cover of Chinese Agents
Typically chinese way of doing things, making the opponent thinking that he's invincible then striking hard and fast at the right time. That in every domain.
AKifer··on U.S. Opposition to Breast-Feeding Resolution Stuns World Health Officials
I think such a matter being discussed at this level is void and a nonsense. Are parents really needing to delegate the choice of breastfeeding their children or not to the government or the WHO ?
AKifer··on The Future of Tesla Hinges on This Gigantic Tent
"I pity any customer taking delivery of one of these cars. The quality will be shocking". I'm wondering what could affect the quality of the cars if they work under that structure. To me all these critics come from business analysts without imagination and pragmatism. I praise people that push boundaries of what's possible, go Tesla.
AKifer··on One Island Grows 80% of the World’s Vanilla
Great answer @sov, in fact if that was an easy process everyone would already have copied it [with a profit]. And it's not only about the process, the microclimates of the Sambirano valley and Sava regions of Madagascar give it a unique flavor. But that doesn't mean it can't absolutely be done anywhere else, that's only a matter of time.
AKifer··on One Island Grows 80% of the World’s Vanilla
@matthewwiese I'm native of Madagascar. In fact a lot of french "expats" and madagascan living abroad are setting up small trading/exportation operations for the french/european market, only a few hundreds kilograms per year is enough to sustain an equivalent of a US upper class revenue. Wikipedia offers a good overview of the thing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanilla
AKifer··on One Island Grows 80% of the World’s Vanilla
And it's even grown only in 2 very specific regions in the north of the island (where most of the cocoa production also come from). There's still huge opportunities if you have enough money and appetite for adventure to start a trading or setting up a plantation. 1ha yields on average 300-400 kg of dried vanilla, a process that takes on average 6-8 months from manual pollination to end of drying. Madagascar is quite strict on land property though, and it's one of the hot topics on the political landscape right now, foreign investors most of the time work with trusted local proxy to set up the business. I myself plan to trip to the vanilla producing region in the following months to see how it works, would be so cool to run a vanilla startup. One more thing, vanilla extract and vanilla caviar are even more valuable than the dried vanilla, and still at the hands of very few businesses. P.S. I live in Madagascar

AKifer··on Bitcoin Sees Wall Street Warm to Trading Virtual Currency
Funny to see that despite all the negative voices against bitcoin, these people still advance theirs pawns and play the game. I seriously think that there's a perverse move behind the walls to instill fear to the commoners towards the cryptocurrencies though the media; until all the pie is eaten. Then in a matter of days they will flip all these negative opinions and show bitcoin as the new messiah on earth.
AKifer··on Finland's basic income trial falls flat
In such a case, an intelligent person always tend to think that the program bore positive results but politicians were too afraid of the consequences so they cut is short. They would be too happy to show a negative result to the public would that be the case.
AKifer··on Our experience with Stripe Atlas (2017)
You made my time worth reading HN today guys. It's great to know that there are people facing the same issues who found how to deal with it and shared.

I'm interested also to know how you did it.
AKifer··on An Update on Last Week’s Accident

AKifer··on EU wants to require platforms to filter uploaded content, including code
If the copyrighted code, against which your pushes would be compared, are by definition closed source, how could these filters work ? Or will software companies reach an agreement with repo providers like github so the filter robot can parse their closed source code ? Kind of a politics BS just destined to keep the discussion boiling for a few months.

AKifer··on Fools and their crypto
Now the red flags are:

1- Silly idea adjuncted with the blockchain label 2- No immediate answer to the question "How this is going to make money ?" 3- A white paper without substance, just a piece of marketing paper convincing you about the scheme with lots of use case diagrams etc 4- Ratio of advisors and other fuzzy titles / technical people at 10+

AKifer··on Enter 'petro': Venezuela to launch oil-backed cryptocurrency
What would be the difference with that crypto stuff and just emitting some oil backed EFT ? They happen just to be either all idiots at the top of that government, which I hardly doubt; or they are just trying to hide their CCC rating to the ignorants and buzz riders.
