AbbeSomething··on Cardio fitness is a strong, consistent predictor of morbidity and mortality
This sounds ridiculous until you go to Amsterdam see that few wear helmets there. And everyone is cycling.

They might be more inclined to cycle because they don’t need to wear a helmet.

After years of cycling with helmet you get so used to it and it doesn’t bother you. But how many skip the bike because they never got used to wearing a helmet?

Agree, east was a poor choice of word. Perhaps powerful would be better because frequently it can be difficult to attain. But it is difficult to pick good nuances for broad generalizations. There are many other attractive aspects of micro services and many cases for which they are perfectly well suited.

CPU’s are mind boggling fast compared to data transfer. There are exceptions but for the vast majority of workloads reducing data transfers is the easiest optimization.

But scale is the obvious key component, having CPU’s allocated to doing mostly nothing is such a waste.

I miss Ingrid Marie, this list strikes me as a summary of common industry varieties.

AbbeSomething··on Single-chip processors have reached their limits
Can you clarify what you mean? How can anything that would use a major share of a wafer or even a whole one be mainstream? Producing a wafer is expensive, the chips are only available to ordinary people in high income markets because you get hundreds or even thousands from a single wafer.

Are there any examples of reusable "computers" like this? I've seen some demonstrations but they are not generic to the problem and reusable, they seem to have the data encoded in the makeup of the "computer" itself.

I write computers in quotation marks because even if they solve computational problems they are so different from what we are calling computers today, eg: mold growing in a maze and similar.

AbbeSomething··on Why Carmakers Can’t Transition to Newer Chips
Is a part of the problem that the chips they are depending on are so trivial and small that you would end up losing more when cutting it up on a smaller process? I guess there is a limit to how many chips you could put on a single wafer even if the chip was only a single gate?

Maybe the old nodes are efficient enough for the chips they need. Then again it would make sense to update designs frequently enough to stay at nodes that have plenty of capacity, perhaps every 5 or 10 years or so?
