AlgorithmicTime··on Play deprivation is a major cause of the teen mental health crisis
There's always the Post-9/11 GI Bill. 36 months of tuition at the most expensive in-state rate in whatever state you attend school in plus Basic Allowance for Housing equal to an E5 with dependents is quite good.
AlgorithmicTime··on What AT&T and Verizon knew about toxic lead cables for decades
I mean if you start licking it or chewing it you might, but normal usage just wash your hands afterward and you're fine.
AlgorithmicTime··on Against Alcohol (2022)
We don’t live to make the line go up - we make the line go up that we might live. What is in an extra half percentage point in the GDP that’s worth taking away one of life’s joys from people?
AlgorithmicTime··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
> Affirmative Actions seems to just be reversed racism. I.e. in the end more-or-less still unfair.

It's not even reversed racism, it's just plain old racism. The only difference is the targets of the racism are European descended and Asian descended people instead of African and Latin American descended people.

AlgorithmicTime··on Dear Red Hat: Are you dumb?
>Please, dear Red Hat, just give me a DigitalOcean VM (or something comparable) that costs a few dollars more and has automatic RHEL licensing. Make deals with the VM providers, work something out.

We've tried to make deals with RH in the past, but they will only let us sell RHEL VMs with licenses if it's running on a RHEL hypervisor... which none of our platform is using at all.

AlgorithmicTime··on Ancient Carthaginians did sacrifice their children (2014)
Just off the top of my head... Assyria.
AlgorithmicTime··on Recycled denim: a breakthrough?
What do you do in your jeans?

I wear the same pair daily to do pretty much everything. I work, I shop, pick the kids up, walk to my parents house, do yard work, hike, literally everything in the same pair of jeans. I don't think there's a fabric yet made that could withstand the abuse I put on them for more than a year.

Although this pair I'm about to replace is at 16 months so I will revise to say "about a year"

AlgorithmicTime··on Recycled denim: a breakthrough?
I don't think it's realistic for you to expect your jeans to last a lifetime.

I buy decent jeans once a year. The new pair is for daily wear. The old pair is retired for manual labor. The old-old pair is retired to when I crawl under the house.

AlgorithmicTime··on NYPD Can Now Shoot GPS Trackers at Your Car
Why? AR lowers are ludicrously cheap and common. You're going to need a generally "rifle-like" form factor for ease of use, so why not go with the most common design, and save money on things like pistol grips, buttstocks, etc?

And the manual of arms is known to everyone who'll be using it.

AlgorithmicTime··on Japan Breaks with U.S. Allies, Buys Russian Oil at Prices Above Cap
Doing business with the USA is also directly sponsoring terrorism. I don't see a big moral difference.
AlgorithmicTime··on Teen-age fentanyl deaths in a Texas county
Evangelicals are not Puritans, nor is there a theological ancestry from modern evangelical christianity to Puritanism.
AlgorithmicTime··on Utah is first US state to limit teen social media access
I'm still not convinced teen pregnancy is a bad thing. We evolved to have children pretty young. Running after toddlers is way easier when you're younger than when you're in your 30s.

If I'd had kids at 19, they'd be almost done with high school by now. And if my wife had decided to be a stay-at-home mom at 19, she would have been done with the most time consuming parts long ago and well into whatever she decided to do after that part of her life.

AlgorithmicTime··on National Academies: We can’t define “race,” so stop using it in science
We can determine what race you are, with extremely high probability, from your DNA sequence.
AlgorithmicTime··on Amazon Mandating 3 days back in office come May first
And that is to some degree also fair. Both sides have a point in this discussion.
AlgorithmicTime··on Bay Area homeowner is the face of California’s latest housing drama
You mean other than practical, financial, and agricultural obstacles?
AlgorithmicTime··on How ‘Diversity’ Policing Fails Science
>Meritocracy is a myth. participants have too much variability on starting points and environment for the concept to have any usefulness.

That makes no sense. Ranking people by their merit in some dimensions doesn't stop being useful even if their merit would be different if they had been born into different circumstances.

I'm reminded of the saying "if things were different then things would be different." Well, things aren't different, and it's useful to use merit to judge who would be best to do a job.

AlgorithmicTime··on Cargo airships could be big
Apparently that's not actually the case. The Brits and French had a hell of a time shooting down German Zeppelins in WWI with standard tracer ammo.
AlgorithmicTime··on Companies use drip pricing to overcharge consumers
Capitalism is a necessary but not sufficient condition for a free market.
AlgorithmicTime··on U.S. accuses Google of abusing monopoly in ad technology
The judiciary doesn't bring allegations... that's they adjudicate them. The DoJ or similar has to bring them.
AlgorithmicTime··on Mercedes-Benz workforce to receive record profit-sharing bonus
>I was on a wedding in NYC last summer. One of the guests I talked to was a junior dev. He was making 120k/y. He had to flat share. With 120k?

Ok well the problem there is he's living in the most expensive place he possibly could. Live in the suburbs and you won't have to share a flat on $120k.

AlgorithmicTime··on Taking Sex Differences in Personality Seriously (2019)
There are people who call themselves witches... but witches in the sense of women who have made a pact with Satan in exchange for supernatural powers are not real.

Indeed, if they were real, we would be quite correct to persecute them.

AlgorithmicTime··on Sperm counts worldwide are plummeting faster than we thought
Interesting. Our first took about 4 or 5 months? I think my wife stopped her birth control at the end of July and we conceived in December. Our second took 2 months, my wife stopped her birth control in September and we conceived in November. We're both in our mid-30s.

Anecdotally, my wife's sister and her husband have been trying for almost a year? And they've had one miscarriage and nothing else.

AlgorithmicTime··on Z-Library Aftermath Reveals the Feds Seized Dozens of Domain Names
It's almost as if the framers of the Constitution knew what they were doing when they created a decentralized federalized system and we've screwed it up pretty badly by centralizing power in the Federal Government.
AlgorithmicTime··on An unwilling illustrator found herself turned into an AI model
But if I train my own neural network inside my skull using some artist's style, that's ok?

Either a style is copyrightable or it's not. If it's not, then I can't see any argument that you can't use it yourself or by proxy.

AlgorithmicTime··on An unwilling illustrator found herself turned into an AI model
Certainly something is lost by removing scarcity... at the same time, once that scarcity is gone, it can't be restored short of civilizational collapse. There's no way to put the streaming genie back in the bottle, nor the Stable Diffusion genie.
AlgorithmicTime··on Ask HN: What's Your Biggest Regret?
Wish I had kids when I was in my early 20s rather than my early-mid 30s.
AlgorithmicTime··on Facebook Freeloads Off Newspapers. This Plan Might Stop It

AlgorithmicTime··on The Next Silicon Valley Will Be in the US Heartland: Steve Case
I doubt it. Look at the period from 1920-1960. Extremely entrepreneurial, extremely innovative, and tight immigration controls.

The talent is largely already here.

AlgorithmicTime··on Future trains could provide carbon capture
Those ridiculously long distances in the middle of nowhere are not really well suited for overhead electrical wires.
AlgorithmicTime··on House Democrats to propose ban on lawmaker stock trading – report
We should let them own a house in their constituency, at least.

I'm open to disallowing real estate speculation.
