AlgorithmicTime··on FDA to order Juul e-cigarettes off U.S. market
Vaping is not smoking. This should be obvious, but you apparently are totally unaware that vaping is not smoking.
AlgorithmicTime··on FDA to order Juul e-cigarettes off U.S. market
>increases blood pressure

So does caffeine.

AlgorithmicTime··on Sex is going out of fashion?
I mean, I have sex with my wife on average 3-5 times a week. It's not daily but it comes close. It only changes when she's recovering from giving birth or one of us is sick.
AlgorithmicTime··on Sue Big Oil
Uh, no. I don't want my expenses to grow even more than they already have.
AlgorithmicTime··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
Company policy does not apply to the owner of the company.
AlgorithmicTime··on Barriers to Business – How cities can pave a path to entrepreneurship
The problem is bureaucrats are unfireable. The politician can't actually make them "do something" because they lack the power to incentivize them.
AlgorithmicTime··on The case for expanding rather than eliminating gifted education programs (2021)
What if socioeconomic status is heavily correlated with ability?

We know IQ is highly predictive of socioeconomic status. We know that IQ is almost entirely heritable barring things like nutrient deficiencies and disease.

So why would it be surprising to see that kids of higher economic status people are themselves more able than kids of impoverished people?

AlgorithmicTime··on What a gas stove ban means for restaurants
Induction stoves are seriously inferior to gas, in every way.

They are slower to heat.

They are more expensive to operate.

They are more fragile.

They rely on complex electronics vs. simple mechanics.

They require specific cookware made out of only certain materials.

They require direct contact with the "burner" to work.

In what possible way are they superior?

Whirlpool is a major US brand of appliances.

AlgorithmicTime··on Ubiquiti vs. Krebs
TP-Link's Omada AP line is solid.
AlgorithmicTime··on US schools can subscribe to an electric bus fleet at lower prices than diesel
Literally all the school buses in my area are operated by private companies which contract with the local public school districts. None of them are full of advertising.
AlgorithmicTime··on Ask HN: How can I prepare for hard economic times?
If you went into fixed interest rate debt before a period of inflation, you're likely to be fine.
AlgorithmicTime··on Russian forces invade Ukraine after Putin orders attack
"Airstrip One"
AlgorithmicTime··on Starlink satellites hindering detection of near-Earth asteroids, study finds
Starlink is too low to cause Kessler Syndrome. The orbits all decay within a few years naturally.
AlgorithmicTime··on Starlink satellites hindering detection of near-Earth asteroids, study finds
No government decided to build it? Like what kind of question is this?
AlgorithmicTime··on Campbell Soup turned New Jersey into a tomato-growing state
Eggplant parmesan.
AlgorithmicTime··on Long Now Years: Five-Digit Dates and Y10K-Compliance at Home (02013)
Everything's mythology, one way or the other. By turning some other arbitrary point into the new calendar year 0, you will mythologize it.
AlgorithmicTime··on Railway lines once connected the Middle East
I disagree. The freedom to get in my car and go anywhere in the country, in the company of my entire family, no less, is priceless.
AlgorithmicTime··on At SpaceX, I couldn't stop getting sexually harassed
Why is looking for a romantic partner where you do most of your socializing weird?
AlgorithmicTime··on The Amazon Empire Strikes Back
Yep. I once had a whole bunch of stainless steel tanks fabbed in China, loaded into a container, and shipped to us on the East Coast. Shipping was ~2.5k for this giant container.
AlgorithmicTime··on The History of WD-40
Don't use WD-40 on your guns. It leaves a shellac-ish residue when it dries, which is bad for them. I use Ballistol instead.
AlgorithmicTime··on Culture shock
>All house floors, apart from kitchen floors, obviously, are carpeted. I have no idea why, someone tell me.

You're in an apartment, carpets are cheaper than a hard surface floor for the price point of an apartment. So anywhere where a hard surface isn't required, wall to wall carpet will be put down.

The other advantage of carpet, especially in an apartment, is that it muffles the sound of your movement.

Last, it's also warmer in the winter, which is nice.

Now, in my own home, I have hardwood flooring throughout and area rugs.

>Stoves are always electric. No lighter needed.

Electric stoves are actually low end, or if you live somewhere without natural gas. A gas stove has a built in igniter with a little spark generator on each burner. So no lighter either way!

>But for bathroom taps, I don’t understand why there’s two different knobs for hot and cold.

Stylistic choice. You can also get bathroom faucets with a central handle control. Kitchen faucets can be either way, too.

>Names are re-used to an uncomfortable extent here: streets, cities, states, suburbs, all tend to borrow from each other.

AlgorithmicTime··on Silicon Valley wants to power the U.S. war machine
Few countries have obtained nukes only to later relinquish them.

South Africa did, because the outgoing government didn't want to hand nukes to its successor government.

Ukraine, well, see how that worked out.

Kazakhstan, Belarus... seems ok for them so far.

AlgorithmicTime··on Data trading for ad revenue must be regulated
>I had actually believed Google's "don't be evil" line

The thing is, so did the founders of Google. The issue is not that they were lying to you.

AlgorithmicTime··on Uranium Glass
It's U-238, so the half-life is about 4.6 Billion years. Not totally stable, but pretty damn stable.
AlgorithmicTime··on Trump's new platform and the Affero General Public License of Mastodon
So this is basically an attempt to silence a politician. It's about as far as can be from the ideal of free software.
AlgorithmicTime··on Choosing the Right Wall Anchors
That's the standard type of wall, yes. Studs with a sheathing fixed over them. On the interior, drywall. On the exterior, plywood or specialty sheathing materials.
AlgorithmicTime··on Chery QQ Ice Cream goes on sale in China – a modern electric car for $4,600
You buy for the times you will need the capacity?

Am I hauling crap from Home Depot every day? No. But two or three times a month I need to move a bunch of stuff, be it lumber, mulch, or doors. So I have a vehicle that can do that, because not having that capability would cost more per month in rental or delivery fees than having that capability costs me.

AlgorithmicTime··on Atlassian fired me while I was taking care of my wife who is fighting cancer
Right, PTO is compensation.

I always make sure I end the year with a zero PTO balance (no rollover) and I make sure that I encourage my employees to do the same.
