AndroidKitKat··on Firefox Is Finally (Re)Adding Support for Web Apps
Sent one to the email in your HN profile. Cheers!
AndroidKitKat··on Two new PebbleOS watches
Agree with sibling, security theater largely. I suspect the logic of banning is to stop recordings of conversations, whereas Bluetooth is just a protocol for sending data. Eliminate collection sensors and mediums for transmit are fine.

I did decide to purchase a Pebble Time Steel and a new battery alongside the Core 2 Duo. I hope that with Eric back in charge, the old Pebbles will be allowed to use the new app and hopefully get modern apps.

Would have been nice to see a model without a microphone. I understand I'm a minoritiy (workplace doesn't allow devices with mics), but being severely hamstrung with smartwatch choices that don't have a microphone is tough. Will still definitely buy one to support the project, and will eagerly watch (heh) for new models!
AndroidKitKat··on Tell HN: I just updated my wife's Chrome, and uBlock is no longer supported
It does in a limited capacity now [1]. No, it doesn't auto-skip for you and it's not nearly as quickly updated as SponsorBlock itself is, but it works fine enough on the iOS app.

AndroidKitKat··on Why is Apple so bad at marketing its TV shows?
If you haven't already, check out Dark Matter, too!
AndroidKitKat··on Ask HN: What's the most creative 'useless' program you've ever written?
Made one of those silly Bad Apple [1] renditions using NSSwitches with AppKit [2]. I recorded the video with a buggy version, but was still pretty happy with it! [3]

AndroidKitKat··on US probes Tesla's Full Self-Driving software after fatal crash
I recently took a 3000 mile road trip on 12.5.4.1 on a mix of interstate, country roads, and city streets and there were only a small handful of instances where I felt like FSD completely failed. It's certainly not perfect, but I have never had the same failures that the original thread poster had.
AndroidKitKat··on Visual Studio Code is designed to fracture (2022)
That's what I do. I can program my Go, Python, Java, and JavaScript projects all within IDEA Ultimate by just installing the extension from the marketplace. The only exceptions are C/C++ and Rust that 'require' a different IDE or paid extension and don't work in IDEA Ultimate for whatever reason.
AndroidKitKat··on Dawn of a new era in Search: Balancing innovation, competition, and public good
While not quite what you're looking for, Kagi has a "Small Web" feed of sites that are semi-curated blogs. [1][2] I don't know how often it is updated, but I like to poke around every now and then see what's going on in people's corners of the internet.

AndroidKitKat··on WebJars – client-side web libraries packaged into JAR files
Started using this for a personal project (Java, Spring Boot, Thymeleaf) and found these looking for any way I could add things like Bootstrap without having to vendor it and add it to my repository. From a technical perspective these things are pretty fascinating if you ask me!
AndroidKitKat··on Apple to update EU browser options, make more apps deletable
The Orion Browser [1] has rudimentary WebExtension support on iOS despite being a Safari wrapper. Apple's policy also doesn't prevent browsers from bundling adblockers in, which both Brave and Edge do.

AndroidKitKat··on Google is the only search engine that works on Reddit now, thanks to AI deal
Kagi gets part of their index from Google, per the article, so perhaps that's the reason Kagi still works. Wonder if Vlad and Kagi will do (or have done) the calculus to see if buying crawlability from Reddit itself is cheaper than buying results from Google for Reddit search.
AndroidKitKat··on GM collects driver behavior data then sells access to insurance companies
My Tesla insurance has gone down ~$30/mo showing that I've been a 'careful' driver or whatever. Perhaps they were overcharging when I first signed up, but I'm not complaining too much.

That said, the anxiety of always being watched when I'm driving and knowing that I'm directly impacting my wallet has made me consider just eating the extra $100 my old insurance provider wanted just to have the peace of mind that I can drive without feeling like taking that turn too fast just cost me $5

AndroidKitKat··on Beeper vs. Apple battle intensifies: Lawmakers demand DOJ investigation
I think it is because this new Beeper Mini spoofs a Mac, whereas the older Beeper Cloud used a real Mac in a datacenter to forward your messages to you. Personally, I don't think that Apple would have any leg to stand on if they went after the Beeper Cloud on-a-real-Mac implementation.

Really good article and it's great to see this come out right after the fiasco of Sunbird / Nothing Messages.

AndroidKitKat··on Shutting down the Matrix bridge to Libera chat
When you move people onto Matrix, what homeserver do you have them use? I've set up a Matrix server for my immediate family and adoption rate has been good so far. I've set up both my parents, and one of my sisters and one of my brothers have signed up, one sibling is being a bit resistant since "I already use a gazillion other chat apps." But, not everyone has a me to set up and maintain a Matrix server, and I'm weary to tell people to just hop onto the main "matrix.org" server since I don't know what kind of experiences there are for people who don't know what they're doing (e.g. Should they put in PII or remain anonymous?)
AndroidKitKat··on Android isn't cool with teenagers, and that's a big problem
I was watching clips of LinusTechTips' podcast, and he said that speaking to people who he trusts in the mobile phone space, that SD removal was primarily because SD flash is worse than the onboard stuff and they lose more customers who complain/think the phone is bad because of the SD card being worse, than customers who wouldn't buy the phone in the first place because it lacked it.

Personally, I think it's a little of both. It probably helps that less customers complain about the SD card not working, but being able charge an arm and leg for extra storage is icing on the cake.

AndroidKitKat··on Tech CEO sentenced to 5 years in IP address scheme
When I was in a phase of really enjoying IPv6, I went out and bought one of these: https://ipv6buddy.com

I don't type in many IPv6 addresses anymore, so this doesn't see much use anymore. It does make a great desk nicknack, though!

AndroidKitKat··on macOS Sonoma is available today
I wonder why there aren't more "casks" for MacPorts. On my work MacBook, I've got Firefox, Google Chrome, Orbstack, and Visual Studio Code installed via brew casks, and none of them are present in the MacPorts catalog. Maybe I should step up and learn how to package things for MacPorts...

AndroidKitKat··on How does Linux NAT a ping?
Not exactly what you're looking for, but your comment about abusing pings made me remember pingfs [1]. It brings an entirely new definition of cloud computing!

While I don't agree with everything in the post, I still found it thought provoking. I'll still be serving my sites with HTTPS.
AndroidKitKat··on Switching from Chrome to Firefox
Highly suggest checking out Firefox-UI-Fix [1]. I use it everywhere I use Firefox, and it makes the browser usable.

AndroidKitKat··on Rectify11 Improving upon the Windows 11 experience
Not going to install something that seems so vague, but I do use ExplorerPatcher [1] on my Windows 11 machines to basically re-create Windows 10 UI and fix all of the annoyances I have with Windows 11. I've got the old right click menu, the old task bar, the old alt-tab interface, pretty much the whole thing. Only reason I use Windows 11 over Windows 10 is because Windows 11 seems to handle my triple monitor setup better, especially when waking up from sleep.

AndroidKitKat··on A list of recent hostile moves by Google's Chrome team
I've been using AdGuard and haven't seen a single ad since I installed it. AdGuard seems to offer a much of the same functionality from uBlock that I enjoyed, like being able to selectively block elements on the page, and choosing what filter lists I want. The only 'downside' is that I believe you have to pay for it, but I believe there is a free version that I use on my mother's MacBook.

AdGuard also offers a pi-hole-esque ad-blackhole that I deploy on my home network and it's got much better UX than pi-hole.

AndroidKitKat··on A list of recent hostile moves by Google's Chrome team
+1 for Orion. Been using it on my work laptop pretty much exclusively (still need to do testing for my work in Chrome/Firefox), and it is hands down my favorite browser.

Now that 1Password natively supports Orion (they had a browser whitelist), I can probably switch back to it on my personal machines / iPhone, but Safari is still pretty sticky for my non-work life.

AndroidKitKat··on Signal walks the line between anarchism and pragmatism
I believe parts of the French government are using Matrix for their communications [1].

I've been wanting to use Matrix more and more over IRC, but I've never really liked any of the Matrix clients. I think I'm just too stuck in my ways about my favorite IRC clients.
