ArcHound··on French bank Credit Mutuel Arkea says €100M missing after cyberattack
One day we'll have to make security a priority, right? Right?

On a more serious note - how long can insurance companies keep covering these breaches? Would the prices go up?

ArcHound··on There is no posttraining data commons
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

If any form of participation will give benefits after they've contributed, it will be abused into extraction.

I honestly think you shouldn't try.

ArcHound··on There is no posttraining data commons
I get it. And I trust that you have only the best intentions at the time.

The issue is that once sharks realize how profitable this project can be they will get into power by any means necessary and then abuse it. We've seen this pattern way too many times now - a grass roots initiative to help humanity that suddenly turns into maximizing profits. See also open source.

I saw how they started mounting cameras on workers in factories. How is this approach any different?

And AI might never truly go away, sure. That doesn't mean it'll be sustainable long term. Until questions of consent, ownership and disruption are solved, we should push back on reckless adoption.

So no, I don't see how this is in anyone's interest to participate, except for the likes of Google.

ArcHound··on There is no posttraining data commons
The intent is good and I get it. But OpenAI started the same way and look at them now. This project is already sponsored by Google and they will want a return.

So thanks, no thanks, there should not be another public common knowledge of this size so that we can cling onto jobs we still have.

ArcHound··on Making Peace with the Projective Plane
Lemme try. Have you ever seen a railroad vanishing in the horizon? You know the rails never meet and yet, they definitely meet in infinity before your very eyes. That's because you see a 2D projection of a 3D space. In 3D, you'll never find the intersection. It gives one of the best intuitions on how to work with points in infinity.
ArcHound··on It wasn't AI that flipped Proton's charge
Not much. Availability first. I'm looking for European hosting in a serious country (mailbox.org is in Germany). I also don't want to see breaches. Critical for me is to bring my own domain, that way I can migrate on a whim.
ArcHound··on It wasn't AI that flipped Proton's charge
You are rightly tearing his argument apart, but you have swung too far.

It is possible to sell trust and security as the major feature. If that's the case, then skipping security testing in favour of more features is not what most of your customers want. Especially if the CEO is so arrogant about it.

And maybe such a product is not the best money extracting operation. That can be ok, if the company/shareholders is ok with it... If not, things are misaligned somewhere.

ArcHound··on It wasn't AI that flipped Proton's charge
This a thousand times. Having your own domain makes all kinds of migrations easier. My blog had 3 providers, my emails have 2. It still works without a hiccup.

If something happens? I'm ready to pack bags and migrate again.

ArcHound··on It wasn't AI that flipped Proton's charge
You actually can be for profit and profitable. It's the ever increasing shareholder growth that pushes you. Once shareholders demand compromise of the company values, the company values are compromised.

Sorry for the corpo speak, but this time I'd say it's clear and warranted.

ArcHound··on It wasn't AI that flipped Proton's charge
I have good experience with mailbox.org. I've heard good things about tutanota.

I'm not the most privacy-minded guy though.

ArcHound··on It wasn't AI that flipped Proton's charge
I'm a security guy. I know a lot of these privacy-minded folks.

They are not the types to accept enshittification and they are the types to read these news. As soon as they discover something else, they're off.

Good luck proton.

Neocities ride hard on the old-internet hand-crafted HTML aesthetic. Maybe we could start a similar club?
ArcHound··on TeamViewer RCE Vulnerability (CVE-2026-111585)
How many times we'll have to learn the lesson of not accepting anything without validation?

It's not that hard to imagine a scenario where a technician debugs an infected machine.

ArcHound··on GPT-5.6 Sol can beat Factorio on peaceful mode
Yea, I also didn't like how the bot ignored belts and shuffled things through chests and inventory.

I agree though - skipping automation/scaling is a no go, that's why I play Factorio.

ArcHound··on GPT-5.6 Sol can beat Factorio on peaceful mode
I want to design high-SPM factories. I don't want to be interrupted each time a stone patch runs out.

Second point: multiplayer runs in real-time, but I have real-life obligations too - having a short report along the lines of "all quiet on the eastern front" or "actually, Gleba got stuck and Stompers took over" helps.

There's still plenty of game to be played with some of these more complex QoL features.

ArcHound··on GPT-5.6 Sol can beat Factorio on peaceful mode
Honestly, I'm more interested in the harness. Having an LLM gardener that could expand outposts to connect to the main network, or just pop in to observe if there's any major problem to report could be a cool project for long-running multiplayer bases.

I see it at https://github.com/ryanmadden/autorio and https://ryanmadden.net/claude-plays-factorio/, but I'd like to ask - any plans to support blueprints? Or push it further into Space Age or dare I say.. pyanodons?

No matter the answer: very nice!

ArcHound··on AI startup hacks Anthropic, gains access to employee details, internal messages
That's not something you want to see before IPO. Wonder if it'll have an effect on the potential investors and thus the stock price. Also wonder if it then would have left-over effect on other AI stocks.

My popcorn is ready, seems we're up for an interesting week or several.

ArcHound··on Polymarket got hacked
Oh no. Anyway.

ArcHound··on The importance of communities around software
As a fun exercise, read the comments in this thread as a justification for removing SWE jobs and getting rid of human development completely in favour of LLMs. As a bonus, imagine you're an executive and you are saving a truckload of money and headaches that come with dealing with people.
ArcHound··on Here be monsters: What do you still need to know when agents do the work?
> This experience and breadth compounds, but it has to be maintained.

And that's the only reference in this article to this very real problem. How do you maintain your expertise when you stop doing technical work? It'll hold for a while on its own, but then it falls.

But that's a Q1 problem, so no biggie.

ArcHound··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
That is news to me. This is pretty bleak for a normal person - it's profitable to take an established community, turn it into a propaganda echo chamber, scale down engineering until it kinda works and all that on a whims of a billionaire and it's even profitable.

I guess this is why we can't have nice things.

ArcHound··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
Good points. Viewing it from the lens of the original business model or mission, it's a disaster.

I don't think it's right, but I can see how a billionaire just completely overrides the company mission and business model after they buy enough shares or something.

Maybe there are other non-obvious use-cases for other companies, where you're effectively buying the user base to then pull the rug.

A lot of the original customers will just accept such a change. See Twitter or GitHub.

ArcHound··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
True, but there's one very happy shareholder and that's enough. The rest of them are just holding the bag.
ArcHound··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
I want to agree with you. But I cannot.

The matter of the fact is that most governments and newspapers publish on twitter (now X) still. It also serves the purpose of amplifying Musk to a large audience.

If you wanted to transform a public forum into a right -wing echo chamber, then the transformation is a massive success and the platform continues to achieve all relevant objectives.

ArcHound··on Lula wins election after final votes tallied
Yes, for sure, it's not a serious model. But I've observed exactly this scenario a couple of times, so it tracks well for me.
ArcHound··on Lula wins election after final votes tallied
I'm not surprised. If you have one terrible candidate, in the first round you can vote for whomever you like. In the second round, however, you need to ensure they lose, so you vote for the opposite party, whomever they might be.
ArcHound··on Amazon’s “digital pacifier” for toddlers
I hope username checks out.

Leaving parenting duties to the overall average of the internet bound together by corporate scammers is not something I will ever do.

ArcHound··on Amazon’s “digital pacifier” for toddlers
Oh, the usual: make sure they overhear "my kids would NEVER", look at them with a signature look of superiority, smh literally...

The idea is to send a signal that this is not ok. I have no guarantees on effectiveness. What especially gets me going is when the kid eats and looks at some trash like baby shark while it's blasting loud everywhere.

ArcHound··on Amazon's "digital pacifier" for toddlers
I think I get what you're saying, but it's really an unfortunate example.

I think it's still better to ban these obviously harmful things and to reduce exposure to them as much as possible.
